I just picture a bunch of stupid metal head, Metallica fanboys, with their Ride The Lightening t-shirts under their leather biker jackets (that they bought at hot topic), and their long, unwashed hair, and nasty, unstyled beards, and their ESP guitars, with EMG pickups, voting for Hammet over Malmsteen.

I love metal music, but I fucking hate metal fans.

Going by that very narrow description, have you even seen a metal fan since 1985? :lol

CodyWanKenobi

Back in high school (four years ago) they all looked like that! They still do!! I can just hear them now: "Yeah man, Lars Ulrich is definitely the greatest drummer of all time. What? Niel Peart? Mike Portnoy? Who are they???" :lol

Think of the Loudwire audience.  Of course Slayer and A7X is going to top Satch and Sabbath.  It's a :lolpalm: to those who know both, but I'm not surprised.

My buzzcut and love of Metallica says hi.

One day you'll be my age, look back at how insanely silly you were as a kid, and wonder how the hell you got to be this age.  :rollin

Nothing. It's the combination of everything I stated.  :rollin

Synyster Gates getting to the next round  :\

Randy Rhoads getting to the next round  :heart :D :heart

?

Images beat Puppets last time, so it shouldn't be too hard for JP to win this :D

DarkLord_Lalinc

Also, Kirk Hammett is one hell of an overrated guitarrist. Don't take me wrong, I love Metallica, but Kirk's not as half as good as people think he is.

He won against Steve Vai and Tony Iomi... Sad, sad generation of 'metal heads' we are witnessing these days.

I dunno, I hardly ever see people raving about him.

These days he gets recognition only by association with such a hugely popular metal band.
His solos on the first 5 albums were good, and even Load/Reload had some decent solos too, but even at his best he's never been on par with the shredders of the era, and his solos these days are awful. He has no sense of timing or style at all.

Voted for JP.

Mosh

His sense of timing has always been pretty bad. There's a solo on Puppets (I think Battery) where he does straight 16ths but it's all over the place. Completely off.

Agree, KH in his prime was nowhere near the best players of his time. The comparison with JP is laughable. His sound, technique, phrasing, harmony, melody... Hell, do they even play the same instrument?

But nowadays all he does is to cover up those flaws with the excessive use of wah. When Images & Words went against MoP, I knew MoP was far more influential to metal than I&W but the DT fan in me still voted I&W. With this poll, JP has an actual chance to win not because DT fans harass the poll, but because the level between both players is ridiculous.

As he should. I don't know if he's my favourite guitarist, but he's MILES ahead of KH, in almost every aspect.

Agreed... the gap between JP and KH is VERY wide in pretty much all aspects; everything from technical ability to tone.

What I find funny is that many fans overlook the fact that he's not even the best guitarist in Metallica:lol

Mosh

Very true. Despite the shit that band gets, James is one of the best Metal rhythm guitarists out there.

bosk1

And his leads are good, too.  He just doesn't want to play lead.

mikeyd23

Oh yeah! All of the leads James has done are fantastic, I guess he just doesn't want to wear to many hats in the band... He already plays such a large role being the vocalist and rhythm player.

DarkLord_Lalinc

I hear you, good men. James is the superior guitarrist in every aspect, and I do understand him not wanting to play leads. He has already much to take care of with vocal and guitar duties.

True, but what I've found of Yngwie is that he seems to have a love/hate relationship with people. Either people love him or hate him, so I can see a lot of Malmsteen haters voting for Kirk just for spite  :lol

I thought it was pretty common knowledge that Hammett isn't all that great. And I love Metallica, too.

Nope, typically, universally speaking, all I ever tend to hear is how amazing he was and how lucky Metallica was to get him when they did, because he's so amazing.

But no matter how you look at it: John Petrucci deserves to win this round!

Common knowledge for people who know metal? Definitely. Others? Not quite sure.
