My (Lazy?) attempt at the album art

So, I was experimenting with my camera and one of those transparent discs that you always find when you buy a column of CDs. With the help of my father I could achieve an exceptionally good alignement with the led lamp behind and as such obtain the best diffraction pattern. Here's the result:

Being that I couldn't find anything better to do, I tried to rework the photo into a fictional cover art for the upcoming DTDT, working out a few issues and plugging in the majesty logo. As always, I had a lot of fun with the Dream Theater header. As always, it looked way better on photoshop than it eventually turned out on PNG. So, here it is!

DISCLAIMER: I know it's the wrong font, but I don't have the right one. So, either live with it or link me with that.

Here you go. :)

Nothing should look any different in Photoshop to how it does as a PNG, since it's a lossless format. Or am I misunderstanding?
That photo is really neat. The Majesty logo works great in the center there, with the LED circles around it. My suggestion would be centering the image both horizontally and vertically, and maybe even try cropping it in closer? Either way, I like it. It's funky and abstract, and there's a bit of a (intentional?) DSOTM vibe to it.

I didn't want to crop it further to keep the hands in sight. I thought it was good to show some of them, to give some sense of mistery. OP updated with correct font and better alignment.

My monitor is adjusted a little dark, so I didn't notice the hands!

Meatrose

Yeah, that's a really cool picture right there. Good job.  :tup

tartarus250

Well I would be quit happy if that was the new cover :tup

BlackInk

It's miles and miles and miles better than that other one on the "in studio" thread. At least if you hadn't posted this and someone posted without saying they made it I wouldn't really be able so say if it was fake or not.

Scorpion

Amazing, amazing art. If Hugh Syme disappoints me, I might even use this one for my iTunes. :) ... though I'd of course be interested what people like Zydar can come up with beforehand (wink, wink, nudge, nudge)

Thematt202

Yep, that's fantastic artwork.  I'd happily accept it for DT12.

wasteland

Wow guys, thank you all! I'm really flattered and a little surprised by your reaction! I mean, I held it back for two days because I didn't know if it was up to the standards of excellence STEVETHEATER, Zydar and others set two years ago! I'm very glad you appreciated it. Now we should have a thread dedicated to our fan artwork for DTDT, if we don't already. :)

Il mio unico commento è: magari. I would love such a cover.

?

I would happily accept that as the album cover :)

Really creative and cool, I like it!  :tup

This. Maybe just leave the hands out, it doesn't add anything. And think about leaving the band name too.
Just the leds with the majesty-logo. Very powerful. I like it!

Woodworker1

I really like it as well.  I can't see the hands though.

hefdaddy42

It's not my thing, but you did a good job with it.

I just saw this image on the net and loved it. Don't know  if it fits with DT concept but I think the background works well. Sadly I have no such talent.

My eyes....

I like it but its really bright.

That actually looks really cool to me.  Great job!   :tup

Also, am I to understand that the image itself is an unedited picture of one of those transparent disc thingies?  Because if so, that's really, really awesome.

wasteland

Yep! I was really lucky to catch the right alignment, and I would never have made it without having someone else hold the disc.

Here's two failed pics:

:omg:  Even those 'failed' images are pretty awesome.  I've gotta try this.  Thanks for bringing it to my attention!

I was out walking today and I took a nice photo so I decided to make a DT art out of it :

"Invasion Against Nature"

Too much controversy and politics there.

I think now we should start a contest to find the most obscure unrelated photo possible to test the limits of what an acceptable Dream Theater album cover can be.

I do think it will be easier to find what wouldn't work.

Here's something that wouldn't work, and it was a top comment on YouTube (roughly):

Or perhaps somehow make the hands just stand out a BIT more to help add that something - somewhat near the level that "Sisyphus"is noticeable in Haken's new album art. I also didn't notice it and when you pointed it out I thought it would be cool to see it a bit better. Or course one could then make the argument that it would be like a cliché image of a crystal ball with the hands around it, but I don't think that would detract from it at all.

Overall, very cool!
