Perpetual Change

It never ceases to amaze me how metal bands consistently cut corners on audio production, even when the issues are so well-known and widely discussed.

I guess, at the end of the day, metal labels recognize that it doesn't matter all that much. Spending more money to have an album that sounds above the low industry standard probably doesn't affect sales enough to justify the costs.

The best DT bass sound (and overall sound) album was FII.

I would name Metallica as a prime example for not hearing if there's any bass on it
Yeah, almost all Metallica albums sound awful. The classic ones have no bottom at all and just axe you right in the face with mids and highs, and the newer albums are compressed beyond listenability. Unfortunately the ones that don't have any particular sonic problems are also the ones that feature the band's worst material (Black, Loaded, etc.).

Y'know, that's probably the real reason I just can't get into Metallica, now matter how hard I try.

Just listen to Haken or Riverside to hear how well bass can be recorded in a metal band.

Also one must understand that in metal , DT included, the bass is doubling the guitar, so it is felt more than heard. Same goes for other parts, myung plays a lot of whole notes sometimes, so you can hear him but he isn't playing anything, just holding out the notes.

And you guys are crazy. The only DT album where I cant legitamately hear the bass is BC&SL

No doubt. If they just use that album as a guide when it comes to mixing bass it will always sound good. It reminds me a bit of how I like mixing bass myself when it comes to volume.

Shouldn't be that hard to be heard anyway, depending on how low the riffs go. Down on the B string a bass typically doesn't cut through that much because of how the human ear works (harder to point out the actual tone of the bass under the guitars down there), but when playing in E for instance being heard is simple. Of course it's easier to point out the bass if a completely different line is played. Anyway, when playing under guitar riffs I like to play pretty hard, to make sure the transients are heard. Then it's no problem to be noticed even down on the lowest string. An example of how to cut though easier (unmixed stuff and bass at tracking volume): https://soundcloud.com/dellers2/bass-test
Actually Myung kinda plays hard like that as well, he's just often EQ-ed and volumed out of the picture.

An odd request, but if this new album could be mixed and balanced the same as Live at Budokan, I'd be super pleased.

I feel that their Budokan show is one of the best-mixed albums/performances to-date. No one instrument was left behind. Truly glorious!

uhhh there should be a third option: "I trust that Rich and DT know whats best for the mix, am completely impartial to the mixing of certain instruments, and will judge/enjoy it for what it presents musically".
I will say that I do hope the drums are a little higher in the mix relative to the way they were in ADTOE.

I really enjoyed much of 8V and it stayed atop my rotation for a long time. It was also an album that was accessable. BUT...
the songs on it that I don't like are my least favorite in DT's discography. They are skipped 100% of the time.

Cool, but what does that have to do with the mix of DT12?
