^That's exactly what I meant: some of the riffs are really heavy, but Beautiful Agony prevents the song itself from being the heaviest DT have put out.

That's exactly what MP meant with an album title. Every black heavy cloud has still silver beautiful linings.  ;)

The Dark Eternal Night has ragtime in it. Automatic disqualifier.

But it's an evil ragtime, so it still counts.

Pols Voice

To me, TDEN sounds more like a parody of heavy than actual heavy.

Jordan Rudess. Makes Ragtime metal.

The Glass Prison or The Shattered Fortress

I have never seen a thread about heaviness end in any sort of agreement because everyone always has a different definition for "heavy." This is, of course, no exception.

Though I do love how it gives me an excuse to go and listen to DT's heaviest songs for a while.

My vote goes to TGP.

TheGreatPretender

The Mirror - Most Sludgiest
Honor Thy Father - Most Thrashy/Most Angry
TDEN - Most Metal Lyrics

+1

I'd like to throw my hat in to The Mirror or TGP. TGP is more metal, The Mirror is just straight up heavy.

Has anyone noticed that a lot of the songs brought up so far have MP's lyrics?

I think this also means that we may not have any contenders for this thread in the future.  From my perspective this is unfortunate.  I don't want all heavy songs but a few good ones here are there are great.

KevShmev

I'd definitely go with The Mirror, The Glass Prison or Honor Thy Father.

I agree about The Dark Eternal Night sounding like a parody of metal.  That is part of its charm, its over the top cheesiness, but still.

And while I don't like that particular part of the song, the end of This Dying Soul might very well be their heaviest "moment" ever.  It's heavy as hell AND fast.

Well, I think some of the best Metal I've ever heard doesn't take itself too seriously. This is one of the most Metal songs I've ever heard, and I definitely can't take it seriously, but it's very awesome: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N_UGFLT0VMY

RRROOOOAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRRAAAAAAAHHHHHH!!

wasteland

I have really nothing to add to this thread, besides saying that my favourite, among those DT songs *I* would call heavy, are The Mirror, Bridges In The Sky and TDEN  :tup

About TDEN, I completely agree with all that KevShmev said!

PROGdrummer

Raw Dog is definitely  one of the heaviest pieces of music ever recorded.

Bridges might have a heavy intro but it is not consistently heavy. It's not much heavier than Outcry or BaI.

The chorus isn't really heavy (which is a good thing, really, as I like choruses to focus on the melodies), but the rest of the song is really heavy IMO at least. Pretty much the heaviest they've ever done. Not the hardest, the heaviest.

"Honor thy father", definitely. :metal
