All of these all over my brain. Razor's Edge is the weak one here though.

As the outro solo in The Best of Times frankly saves that song, I'd be remiss if I didn't mention it here.

The Presence of Frenemies

TBOT/TMOLS/8V trump everything for me. By a lot.

Apart from these that have been named I really dig TMOLS and TBOT for their guitar fading. Also Innocence Faded and Finally Free with the One Last Time outro version.

Which means I also like the One Last Time outro as well.

EDIT: About 30 secs ninja'd.

Unlegit

A lot of my favorites have already been mentioned, so no point in saying them again. I'll nominate Take the Time though.

TheGreatPretender

Surrounded has an awesome outro, very satisfying.

The Shattered Fortress has one of DT's best outros, mainly because it's the intro of The Glass Prison.

And yes, the outro to The count of Tuscany is very awesome.

These Walls

Aw yes, this one is amazing. I actually made a version where I extended it out a lot longer.

The second half of "Fatal Tragedy" is the best outtro in my books, without a shadow of a doubt.
And, off the top, some close contenders would be:

- The final moments of "Prophets of War".
- The closing three minutes of "Space-Dye Vest".
- "XII. Responsible".
- And yes, everything from the F# onwards in "Learning to Live".

There are more that I know I'm missing, but these are the ones that came to mind.

senecadawg2

For me probably The Count of Tuscany.

But close runners up would have to include:

Trial of Tears 'The Wasteland'
ACOS 'Crimson Sunset'
Octavarium 'Razor's Edge'
And Learning to Live's
Quote from: LithoJazzoSphere on November 28, 2024, 04:50:14 PMThe senecadawg who won 11 roulettes is dead and gone.  He is now diogenesdawg2.

If I could only choose one, I'd go with LTL, both the piano pre-outro and the bass outro are fantastic.

Syzzle

Learning To Live by far.

m0hawk

If Octavarium's outro didn't have that stupid The Root of All Evil segment at the very end, it would be the best damn outro of all time. So The Count of Tuscany it is.

Ħ

Learning To Live, by far.

Learning To Live a head and shoulders above everything else. :tup

I'm gonna say it now, EVERY single DT song ( at least exluding The Majesty Demos minus Another Won) has a really satisying ending, no matter how good the rest of the song is. I find a lot of money-making songs lack a satisfying ending, and that's one of the things that make Dream Theater great, is how well every song ends.

Trial of Tears - GOD DAMN. I get chills when the line "Still awake, I continue to move along" comes in. The ending does the Octavarium thing, ending with a similar section to the intro, which works well in this song.

Octavarium (Razor's Edge) - What can I say? As it begins, fading from the F chord finishing off Intervals, then Jordan does this descending diminished run which sounds like the castle theme from Super Mario World, and then an EPIC reprising of the first melodic theme after the lap steel solo, followed by the beginning of TROAE repeating. It's all magnificent.

In the Presence of Enemies Pt. 2 - I'm not a fan of the whole song that much, but near the end of the guitar solos in The Reckoning, the long intro of Pt. 1 is reprised, and after the solos, the first volume dip of Pt. 1 is reprised, with grand guitar chords and the synth playing the melody, which differs from the original melody which had piano backing and guitar playing the melody, and much softer playing. This moment fucking KILLS ME every time I hear it!

The Killing Hand - The very last Rush-y sounding section. Not much to say other than kicks major ass.

Can't think of any other off the top of my head, it's hard to choose. I'll maybe post again if I think of any.

Learning to Live, Count of Tuscany and These Walls.

EDIT: Forgot In The Name of God!

Meatrose

Wow, there are so many excellent "outros" but I have to say that the finales of Octavarium and The Count of Tuscany both have a special place in my heart.

No, it's gotta be Learning to Live, that outro is just beautiful and recaps the whole mood of the song. Other great ones are Surrounded, Take the Time, Space-Dye Vest and In the Name of God. But LtL is the clear winner.

Eldomm

I have to add Only a Matter of Time....

...and i would add Breaking All Illusions

Mladen

Either This dying soul or The Ministry of lost souls. I'll never be able to decide.

There's another version with the 8VM theme played briefly again on the flute, I prefer that one to TROAE ending - though I understand why they chose it.

A few that sprung to mind that I haven't seen mentioned are Sacrificed Sons, Hell's Kitchen and Endless Sacrifice.
Whoaaaahh, ohhh, ohhhhh. Whoaaaahh, ohhhhh, ohhhhhh. Waaah, ahhh, haaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaowwwwww

My "short"list in chrono order-

Take The Time - I'm not a big fan of fade-outs, but fade-out guitar solos are cool, and Take The Time ends with a tasty one
Lines In The Sand - I love the big bang crash ending with the flattened 5 chord in there.
SDOIT/Losing Time - the whole song is a super epic ending
In The Name of God - Huge, huge ending, and the live outro with the guitar solo is also stellar, although it's lacking the battle hymn and piano bit.
These Walls - The chorus with the guitar lead is beautiful, then the big heavy riff and strings to finish it out. Simple yet very effective.
Octavarium - What more needs to be said? :)
ITPOE pt 2 - Hugely underrated outro, and JLB's vocals are some of his best in recent times.
TBOT - Incredible outro solo in an average song.
TCOT - Another killer outro solo. JP really was on fire on BCASL.
This is the Life - JP nails it yet again.

I just realized that JP is pretty much the deciding factor in what makes the best outros. :lol :metal

This is how I feel.

ZKX-2099

Adding some I haven't seen.

Continuum wank at the end of The Dark Eternal Night.
Drum frenzy in Sacrificed Sons.
The shredding end to Lie.
KARMA STARTS THE SIGNAAAAAAAAAL!
Killer unison at the end of Enemies 1.

Someone must have written this already, by now, but I want you to know that to me the ending of Hell's Kitchen is GENIUS.  :metal
