Haven't they said no more 'music videos' since their target audience generally aren't the ones watching MTV/VH1/etc?

When did they say that? ???
In 1997!

Look at all us freaks cluttering your city streets
Still scalping their ticket-less applause
Spun monkeys on the railroad track, take me to the caine field; I walk along pick my spiderbite
Basically Kyoko Kirigiri

wasteland

I think it was a result of the legendary deal that the band managed to make with the label before the start of SFAM. When the full creative control was concentrated in their hands for the first time.

Yup. "No more vids, it's a waste of money." And afterwards things changed a bit.

I remember somewhere when SC was released MP saying that it made sense to make videos again because people primarily watched music videos on the web, Youtube, etc. instead of MTV or VH1. Which makes a lot of sense if you think about it.
