I'm not sure why I never opened this thread before.  But the title has said "Two weeks till DT are in the studio again" for two weeks now, and I was wondering what the hell was going on.  It was like I was stuck in a time loop or something.

Update from Jordan...

He posted on FB that the rig is being added to and tweaked. :yarr

Is that a microphone in the back of his Kurzweil or Johnny Number 5?

I don't think anyone answered this question.  The Kurzweil is on a triple keyboard stand, but the middle and upper racks are currently unoccupied.  The thing that kinda looks like a microphone is one arm of the empty top rack; the other arm is all but obscured by the Instagram effects.  In the back is another triple, with a Nord (red) on the bottom and a MiniMoog on top.

You can adjust the angle of the middle and upper racks, and that's a hell of a tilt on the top rack, but in the case of the MiniMoog, he has to be able to get to the knobs as well.

The Letter M

I'm not sure if they were linked here or not, but here are other Twitter pics from JR of his rig:

What is that big thing that looks like a huge, square slide guitar?

Kotowboy

I expect we'll find out when JR starts uploading videos of it filmed on his iPhone in portrait orientation and with some awful FX on

Did he use the Harpejji on the last album? I don't even know what that thing sounds like.

Exactly what I expected, it's all just the same color this time around.  :lol

So excited. I can't wait for MM to have an input and see how it adds to the writing process. I think this is the most excited I've been for a new DT album since 8V.

The Letter M

Looks like there's a small keyboard with Mangini's drums! I wonder if he's offering musical input on the harmonic and/or melodic way?! Let's hope so! I'd LOVE to see his name on the music credits!

Also, who else here hopes there's an instrumental on the next album? It's been  4 albums since an instrumental, and from the way JR is speaking, they're churning out riff after riff, so I'm hoping for a riff-tastic instrumental this time around, filled with tons of crazy meter changes and polyrhythms (like TDOE and SOC had a kid with ADD).

Took me a while to figure out what song ADD was.

Yes, I know it's not a song.

Anyway, wasn't the little keyboard there last time too? All the drum triggered samples must come from some place

I can't remember if it was there last time but I'm 99% sure the samples don't come from that. It looks like an MAudio Oxygen series midi controller which itself has no sounds built in.

Anyway, can a musician explain what is that Taurus Moog (and why it is special, if it is at all)? I'm curious :)

Taurus bass pedals started off as exactly that, back in the 70's.  They drove a small Moog synthesizer dedicated to playing bass, usually so someone whose hands are otherwise occupied could play a bass line.  It didn't take long for bands to figure out that they didn't just have to be used for bass notes.  Synth lines or strings, for example, could also be added pretty easily.  Rush uses them a lot, since there's only three of them.  There's an awesome moment during Xanadu when I'm pretty sure both Alex and Geddy are playing pedals, while Alex plays the guitar solo and Geddy plays the rhythm guitar part (they both played doublenecks back then).

I haven't seen a Taurus in years and didn't even realize that they're still around, but it looks like they've evolved quite nicely.  Now I want one.
