ITEM #4 - JORDAN RUDESS - A CHRISTMAS CAROL CD

Front:

Disc:

Back:

Liner Notes:

In addition to Dream Theater stuff, a good portion of my collection consists of side projects.  And since it's Christmas, this seemed like a good one to start with.  This is a pretty rare CD of a score written and played by Jordan for a performance of Dickens' "A Christmas Carol" at the Helen Hayes Performing Arts Center in Nyack, NY (Incidentially, the same venue where "An Evening with John Petrucci and Jordan Rudess" was performed).  I'm not sure how many of these were made, but I believe they were produced and distributed independently.  There's not much particularly unique or interesting about this other than its rarity, but it's the best thing I could think of that I had with a Christmas Theme.

:santa:

The Letter M

Well that is certainly rare enough for me to have never heard of it, let alone listened to it!

Nice find, and I wonder how much one of those might go for because I'm interested in hearing what it sounds like! Is it all on piano, or does he utilize a lot of synths and samples as well? Because that man can play a whole orchestra and it would still sound amazing.

I had heard of this, and it's probably the #1 most obscure Jordan Rudess project tied with the AD spot score he penned almost two decades ago!

I seem to remember the Christmas Carol CD being touched upon by Funky in one of the NEW Voice 'zines from VoicesUK.  Good stuff. :tup

ITEM #3 - AWAKE - THE INTERACTIVE GUIDE

Outer package:

Disc:

Info Sheet:

Disc in package:

This piece isn't particularly rare, but I've always thought it was one of the cooler and more interesting promo items from DT's earlier days.  The disc shown here is the Windows version.  There is also a Mac version out there - I believe they may have originally both come in the same package, although I'm not certain about that.  Because it's so old (and because it's been over 10 years since I've owned a computer with a disc drive), I've never actually run the program, but from what I've read about it, it contains promo pictures, audio samples, biography, band trivia and other info.  It's essentially an extremely early and primitive digital press kit.  Note also that the insert references the launching of the first ever Dream Theater official website "available via the Internet and Mosaic software".  They even used it to set up "live online conferences" with the band.  One of these days if I get my hands on a disc drive I think I'm gonna give this a spin and see what's on there.

Not rare?  Besides mine, yours is the only other one I've ever seen.

I doubt too many have survived the age. It's basically an electronic press kit for Awake which has some cool graphics (for the time) as you said.

I've even got one of Stephen King.

So far, I'm one for four out the items you posted.

Great work so far....

Well, I guess it is pretty rare, but I have seen it pop up on eBay a couple of times.  Do you have the Mac disc too?  Now THAT one is crazy rare... I think I've only ever seen it once.

Windows.
Never saw a Mac disc...ever, but you've probably paid much closer attention to ebay over the years than I have. My experience is mostly looking through record faires and record stores, both of which have mostly dried up over the years.

I was just told by zep that for the happiness of the ladies, the next entry will be a lock of James's golden hair from the DT/Queensryche tour.   :o

Dare I ask which part of the body that hair lock is from?

On a second thought I should have used "stroking" instead of "touching". It would have made a bigger effect  :lol

Thought I'd post this here for those that don't venture into the music forum that much and since it's somewhat related.

Went into the closet last weekend to do a little (very little it seems) cleaning and decided to put this Dream Theater - Awake promotional collectors package together in and effort to thin out the collection a little.

Collection is below:

+ Awake (Very rare ADVANCE US promo with black and white cover and try art (not the Gold Stamped Promo that was issued later)  I think there were only 300 of these pressed: https://www.thefunkygibbons.net/D003.html

+ Lie digipak promotional CD single (still sealed)

+ Awake 18" by 24" promo poster. (Studio shot of band that appears in the Awake CD booklet)

+ Awake promo album flat (12" by 12")

+ Awake Cassette

+ Awake promo postcard announcing Oct. 4 release.

+ Copy of record company release announcing Kevin Moore's departure from the band.

+ Free mystery Awake related item.

$125 (Free shipping in the US of course)

ITEM #5 - MAJESTY DEMO SONG LYRICS PACKAGE

Cover:

Another Won:

Your Majesty:

A Vision (Page 1) :

A Vision (Page 2) :

Two Far:

Vital Star:

March of the Tyrant:

This is the official lyrics package that came with the original Majesty demo tapes.  I'm not sure how many of these were actually distributed, but they're pretty rare - mine is the only one I've ever seen so far.  It's pretty basic - just a cover page with the band's contact info and lyrics to each of the songs.  It also credits which band member(s) wrote lyrics to each demo song.  I more or less just stumbled across this one... Somebody had listed a copy of the original demo cassette on eBay, and this lyrics package was thrown in as an extra.  I already had a copy of the demo tape, so I won the auction, kept the lyrics package and resold the tape, pretty much making all my money back while still letting me hold onto this gem.  Definitely one of my most treasured finds.

AWESOME find! And I used that as source enough to fix writing credits on the List Of DT Songs by Lyricist page on Wikipedia!

?

Myung wrote lyrics before LTL? :omg: JP and Kevin wrote surprisingly much together in those days.

Back then they didn't know any better.  That is a complete misprint.   It should read...  The Gospel According to St. Myung.

Great thread, Chris!  I'm happy to see you contacted the Long Island Music Hall of Fame and offered up some of your stuff.  My fear was that they would just gloss over DT and focus on some of the more bigger names they've inducted (Billy Joel, Mariah Carey, etc.), but I hope they take you up on the offer and do a quality DT display.  And I hope their display doesn't include just Jordan because he's the current keyboardist and not Kevin Moore, who was also from Long Island and helped the band make their mark.  Anyway, great thread and I look forward to following it as the weeks go on!

Wait! I've never heard of this! Is the LA Hall Of Fame to make an official display about DT? When? Why? Of which magnitude? Will the band be alterted/invited? Amazing stuff!  :omg:

LI Music Hall of Fame finally gets a home
By Carl MacGowan

It's been five years since Vanilla Fudge was inducted into the Long Island Music Hall of Fame. But the inventive 1960s rock band has no plaque at the hall -- because there is no hall.

That's why lead guitarist Vince Martell drove Thursday to the hall of fame's future home in Port Jefferson from his house in Cherry Hill, N.J. He had broken rock star tradition, rising before dawn to watch Town of Brookhaven officials turn over a century-old building to hall organizers, who will create a museum there.

"I had to get up early to get here, but this is beautiful," Martell said of the Richardsonian Romanesque structure at Main and East Main streets that formerly housed the First National Bank of Port Jefferson. "I can't wait for them to fill it up."

Thursday's lease-signing ceremony marked the end of a long, frustrating search by hall of fame organizers, who since 2006 have inducted 73 members -- including Billy Joel, Barbra Streisand, The Ramones, Mariah Carey, Guy Lombardo and Beverly Sills -- while looking for a home.

The nonprofit hall will lease the building from the town for at least 15 years for a token one-time rent payment of $10.

The vacant building, which over the years also has been a hotel and town tax office, needs extensive renovations.

"The great musicians of Long Island and the rich musical history of Long Island will finally have a home," said hall of fame chairman James Faith, pumping his fist as he addressed a crowd outside the building. "It's about time, Long Island. This is it."

Faith said after the ceremony that he didn't know when the museum will open. The hall's board is working to raise as much as $1.5 million for renovations, he said.

Besides Martell, inductees at the ceremony included brothers Peppi and Mickey Marchello of The Good Rats, disc jockey Denis McNamara, and Carole Demas and Paula Janis, the stars of the 1970s children's TV show "The Magic Garden."

Demas and Janis, both 71, sang their tune, "The Hello Song," to help christen the hall.

Janis noted that their show debuted on WPIX / 11 "a long, long time ago."

"You know how long ago it was when you're in a museum," Janis said.

LI Music Hall of Fame goal: $2 million
by Glenn Gamboa

It was an amazing night of rock, rap and pop from several different decades as the Long Island Music Hall of Fame kicked off its fundraising campaign with its fourth Induction Gala earlier this month.

The group's goal is to raise $2 million to fund its permanent home in Port Jefferson, creating a center that both pays tribute to Long Island's musical legacy and is an inspiration for the next generation to carry that legacy forward. The Hall of Fame's chairman, Jim Faith, says the group plans to start renovations on the building as soon as it raises the funds.

"People are really rooting for this," Faith said as he walked the red carpet at the Paramount in Huntington before the event.

But what exactly are we all waiting for? While $2 million is certainly a large sum, charities across the area often raise that figure and more in one star-studded night. Can't Long Island's music industry band together to do the same and get things rolling?

"American Idol" Season 10 hopeful Robbie Rosen walked the red carpet before the Induction Gala, genuinely excited to be a part of a community of Long Island artists.

"I just want to introduce myself and my music to everybody here," the Merrick singer-songwriter said. "It's so exciting."

After all, it wasn't so long ago that Long Island success didn't count, according to the music industry. There are generations of rockers and rappers who told people they were from New York, instead of shouting out their actual Long Island roots to gain acceptance.

Twisted Sister's Mark Mendoza says that even though the band would sell out major venues in Manhattan, it was still dismissed as "a Long Island thing."

Isn't it time for that to end?
