Which type of album do you want DT to release next?

Slow, progressive, really melodic with a few rockers like FII or dark, heavy, atmospheric from beginning to end like Train of Thought?

BlobVanDam

Scorpion

SomeoneLikeHim

Something similar to what we in Sweden call "Dansband"

Zydar

Pols Voice

Equal parts Musestep and bebop.

But really, as I've said before, ADTOE was great and had a classic sound, but next time I'd like some more experimentation. I don't want any forced heaviness. An emphasis on melody would be good, because songs like Beneath the Surface and Breaking All Illusions had some really nice tunes. :heart

Keep doing what they're doing, just more. More diverse, few more risks - Six Degrees, Octavarium style. Dramatic Turn was pretty much as safe as they could've played it, and they did a bloody good job on it, but let's see what this new lineup's really capable of.

A real risk would be nice. What they've been doing lately is kind of mild as far as risks go.

TheGreatPretender

More melodic, but still powerful, I'd say. Less 'epic choir'. And more vocal badassery from JLB, he really didn't push himself very far at all on ADTOE.

I'd say he did, but the effect doesn't really show because of the 3x JLB thing. Live the vocal lines sound MUCH more powerful.

I want to be pleasantly surprised again, like I was with ADTOE. It had a lot of elements that, IMHO, were a step in the right direction for everyone in the band.

This time around, I am curious to see how the Mangini machine operates as a part of the writing process. I know he crafted his own drum parts while recording ADTOE, but wasn't involved in the actual songwriting. This time he'll be there from start to finish and I'm honestly excited to see and hear what kind of magic can be made with this new energy the guys have.

ADTOE was influenced by I&W, but I think this next album may sound even more like "Classic DT" depending on which direction they go. For me it's difficult to decide which side I would rather see, because I've found something to like about every album. These guys have been making great music long enough that I can place my trust in their output. They're the only band I like that I can safely say will not disappoint me. I know some of you are going to cringe at that statement but I think my expectations are warranted.

With what's happened in the last 2 years, there isn't a doubt in my mind that DT are motivated and energized to make another great record. A lot of tension left with MP, a lot of energy arrived with MM. That alone should pay dividends towards the future.

I tried to be factual and careful with my words, if I'm misinformed or wrong about any of this than I apologize in advance.

Amen to everything you just said!  :tup

Something "special". I know Octavarium had like the "5/8 theme" or whatever but aside from that we haven't had something special since Six Degrees, which was a double album. So I'd like something like that, a double disc or a concept album. Something special.

Lucidity

Something very intelligent and well-thought-out. More focus on beauty, majesty, and melody than shredding and face-melting. Maybe a few risks, focusing on styles that they have only just touched upon. More well-rounded.

But if I had to choose one thing, I want to hear more jazzy stuff. More atmospheric, dark, etc. Something we haven't heard before.

Yeah, I'm on board with this.
Look at all us freaks cluttering your city streets
Still scalping their ticket-less applause
Spun monkeys on the railroad track, take me to the caine field; I walk along pick my spiderbite
Basically Kyoko Kirigiri

The Gangnam Style of prog metal :metal

OHGODNO

Sorry, that song infuriates me for as yet unexplained reasons.

Lucidity

Also, a theme-based album like Six Degrees or Octavarium, or a concept album like Scenes would be more than welcome. But I don't think that's very likely. One thing I *don't* want to see is a balls-out metal rocker. We've had enough of those. We know you can play, now play well!

IdoSC

To be honest, while I'd be happy with anything as long as it's good, even if it all remained the same; if I could pick my very own choice, I'd want something radically different. I want it to be as shocking as the transition from Images and Words to Awake. It would be nice if they expanded on the influences of Muse shown in Never Enough or Prophets of War throughout an entire album (not necessarily entire songs though; Space-Dye Vest is a ballad, for example, but it still features a lot of the heaviness that Awake is known for in certain parts of the songs).

My main desire for their interpretation of "being influenced by Muse", if that actually happened, would be focusing a LOT on songwriting, and taking the singer into consideration much more in that same regard. James' roles did improve a lot more between the earlier Roadrunner releases and ADTOE, but it can be taken a level higher to where the vocal lines could amaze and surprise the listener just as much as the greatest instrumental sections in ADTOE do. His voice is more than capable, all they need is to write such things.

What I meant was, it's gotta be something that is catchy, fun, and with a music video showing just how funny we all know Dream Theater can be. All of Dream Theater's videos have been of a more serious nature, to go along with songs of a more serious tone.

Am I serious?... I'll never tell :neverusethis:

I think that's just what the band needs in terms of a music video. All their videos so far have been so depressing, let the world know how fun they are! :D

I'd love it. Would've been hilarious if DT basically "mocked" BMUBMD in a music video, and now that we're talking about future songs to come, it's quite hilarious to imagine a song that is actually planned for such a music video rather than a song that's already written.

If the world knew how fun they were, that video would have more view than Gangnam Style instantly!  :lol

They've played it extremely safe with aDToA and did a very nice job with it, so let's see something risky and powerful, but also unique.

Metro

Progressive Hip Hop Doomcore Folkstep with some Bluesy Influences and an Accordion Section

Experimenting with something different, like Awake and Six Degrees did. A step away from their the same thing they've been doing for 10 years would be nice. :)

I don't care, as long as they make a great attempt to make the best of the ideas they come up with.

Yeah, but what he delivers live is not exactly the same as what he delivers in the studio. But even in terms of range. The way he did the very end of "This Is The Life", higher and more powerful, I was hoping to hear that more throughout the album.

?

I'd like to hear something dark but not so aggressive - the last albums with MP had their fair share of metal already. What I'm referring to is something like Awake, some of the stuff on Six Degrees and the Beautiful Agony part in ANTR: dark, melancholic, atmospheric, slightly experimental, heavy but not in the modern "balls to the walls" way like TOT and SC.

But that's just my wish - as long as the band do whatever they want to do and it sounds good to my ears, I'll remain happy.
