I don't think so. I thought it was just an effect.

There was a point during the Solitary Shell jam that Mike looked like he was in deep thought and began to look around side to side quickly, then was normal again

The part i meant was right at the end of the solo where he bends down to the pedal board and then the camera flashes back over to him playing but no sound. Then he stopped and pumped his fist like he screwed up. Then he started playing with sound this time and continued on with the song.

The part i'm talking about starts at 1:00. Watch Petrucci and listen.

Another average setlist from this tour. I wonder what they'll be playing in Chicago tonight.

Other than a few varying songs, that's been the setlist for the entire tour thus far.  In Chicago I would guess they'll swap out Erotomania and Voices for The Dance of Eternity and Take The Time (who knows).  You'll probably also get Solitary Shell and maybe Sacrificed Songs instead of Prophets Of War.  Since it's Chicago hopefully you'll get nine fulls songs plus a couple solos/jams.  When DT left the stage Mike Portnoy said "Come down to Chicago tomorrow night to see us for a different set," so I guess we'll see.

That's what i was expecting anyway (a different setlist in Chicago). But i'm thinking it may be similar to the Minnesota show. If it's not similar to the Minnesota show, then we may get a new song or two for this leg.

SystematicThought

The Minnesota Show had a great set

And, I thought he was just trying to get a little feedback, he did that a lot throughout the show

That's exactly what I thought. Where is the rotation? Where are the surprises?

There have been plenty of surprises. PoW, ItNoG, TDoE/OLT and Sarcrificed Sons were all pretty surprising to me!

Not to mention their one-off Rush cover, and the Zappa Metropolis thing.
And this is just the first PN leg. I'm sure there will be plenty more surprises for when the regular tour comes around. ;)

I thought this was somewhat appropriate to ask here, but does anyone think that Take Away My Pain will ever be played again

I fervently hope the demo version (with an extended solo) gets played sometime.

+1.  Last tour they came back again for a second leg, and they played a completely different set (maybe one or two songs were repeated, and they were both of their new album at the time).  I wouldn't get too bent out of shape over it folks.  Next time around we'll probably get to hear everything else we wanted to (between the two shows, anyway).

I hope the Chicago show is a good one.  They usually play an extra song or two for them, so I'd hope they'll throw out 9 songs, coming in at just under two hours of material (we got 1 hour and 40 minutes exactly).

Oh, I forgot to mention, Portnoy came out and played a song on the drums with Big Elf, and that was after and ran out with a tambourine and danced like a goofball on stage while they played.  It was hilarious!  And during the main show Rudess took his wizard hat and held it over John Myung's head without him knowing.  John just kept jamming on his bass as the crowd laughed and roared.  Good stuff!  They were much more energetic and goofy this year than the last tour, which I thoroughly enjoyed.

Is anyone updating from the Chicago show tonight? And when will the first post be updated?

That's something to ask Portnoy.

ariich

What's wrong with them playing no pre-Rudess songs in a couple of gigs? They've played a load of Awake and I&W on recent tours.

Well they either played Erotomania/Voices/Metropolis or they played no pre-Rudess songs.

neverborn

chicago was my seventh show i've seen. and also the worst. JLB was spot on, but the setlist can't be salvaged. nothing pre-sfam? can we dump this 3 hours of opening dogshit and go back to real tours?

high points: jlb, all 3 new songs, itnog
low points: the naptime scheduled in between these, particularly ss and extendedSS.

ResultsMayVary

Yea, i'm really hoping DT either has one opening act or no opening act when they come back through North America next spring because i want to see them play 14 or 15 songs from every part of the catalogue.

Well, for all pre-Rudess stuff, on the European leg I saw Voices, Erotomania, Caught in a Web, Hollow Years, and a Medley with Metropolis, LtL and ACoS.

And last time around I got Surrounded, LitS, and a medley including Trial of Tears and LtL.

Plus on that leg they played the entirety of I&W at a couple of shows.

Agreed.  I do not think that setlist was bad, though.  I liked ours better in MIlwaukee, but I would have loved to have dumped Prophets of War for something like Solitary Shell or Sacrificed Sons.  This is the first year I haven't gone to both the Milwaukee and Chicago show, and I am regretting it (In The Name of God - I WISH).

Speaking of dumping the opening bands, is that a decision that Road Runner makes, or can Dream Theater chose to not have openers?  I'd guess it's the former, but I don't know for sure.
