This is getting out of hand.  :lol

So, to get back on topic, I remember reports of the gigs saying that the crowd wasn't really into it if not on key songs like Metropolis and Pull Me Under.  :-\

?

Unfortunately this was the case. The first night people were very into BITS and one or two other songs. The second night started good but the crowd again failed. Both encores were amazing though.
I have to put some of the blame on DT because the sound wasn't good, it seemed they were far more concerned on what the DVD was going to sound like than delivering good sound to the people at the concert. The 4 times I had seen DT perform in that venue they always sounded perfect.

Kotowboy

Well then they got the show they deserved.

All the more for us at home ! :p

I'd really like to see all the stuffs from ADTOE.. I'm praying for "On The Backs Of Angels", "Outcry", "Breaking All Illusions", "Lost Not Forgotten" and "Bridges In The Sky"...

They played every song you mentioned. And every song you mentioned is going to make it to the DVD. Are you happy?  :)

Filipe_metalhead

yup... Great tunes!!

is this the setlist from houston??

Bridges in the Sky
These Walls
Build Me Up, Break Me Down
Endless Sacrifice
Drum Solo
The Ytse Jam
Outcry
The Silent Man
Beneath the Surface
On the Backs of Angels
Forsaken
Through My Words
Fatal Tragedy
Breaking All Illusions
Under a Glass Moon

wasteland

I suppose so, but it doesn't really have anything to do with the DVD.

Filipe_metalhead

What do you mean?? Are they making something like Chaos In Motion?? Besides, it's kinda sad they didn't made any DVD from the Black Clouds & Silver Linings era... It would be awesome to see "The Count Of Tuscany" in High Quality...

SeRoX

Filipe, where have you been, man?

Well, They did two nights at the same place (Luna Park, BA), they were filmed for the DVD. TCOT is not included for the DVD but hopefully we can get it as an extra song with high quality from Europe tour. AFAIK, James is now in control for bootlegs.

Unfortunately, I don't think we'll see anything from Ytsejam boots for awhile. They're certainly not going to release anything to compete with Live In Luna Park.
Quote from: wkiml on June 08, 2012, 09:06:35 AMwould have thought the same thing but seeing the OP was TAC i immediately thought Maiden or DT related
Quote from: Stadler on February 08, 2025, 12:49:43 PMI wouldn't argue this.

goo-goo

Btw, who is mixing the audio? There was a tweet by James directed at Richard Chyuki about it but then Richard said he wasnt able to do it (probably some Rush work)

I also heard the same thing regarding YJR.  James said in an interview that some things were lined up.  That could mean a year from now, but at least we can remain hopeful.

cyberdrummer

If we do get any bonus tracks, TCOT and/or Learning to Live from High Voltage festival would be excellent choices. Proshot and decent sound.

wasteland

Yes. I say that the High Voltage DVD will come a few months after the new album, likely by Christmas 2013, while the band will likely be in a break between tours.

Ι really hope we get The Great Debate on some official release, i think James was great when they played it in Athens, and the drums were very good (not so much on the fast double bass parts where the bass drum was inaudible, but good nonetheless)

Yes!

I am grateful I got to see them play the Great Debate since they ended up taking it out of the set about halfway into the tour.

Kinda makes up for not getting to see them play Outcry or Beneath the Surface on either of the Chicago gigs.

I'm just excited to have the first DT dvd since Live In Tokyo, not to have a close up of Portnoy for EVERY OTHER SHOT.  It's rather obviouss who the director was on the other ones.

I mean, it's not like the camera-people had anything to do with the close-ups at all. Also, MP was the drummer, and he was a huge showman, and he also sang back-up vocals and some lead, so would his spot light in the DVDs really be that crazy?

As far as I'm aware, probably nothing to do with the camera-people. They just record it. They'd have three hours of each band member, not counting extra angles. That'd be an editing decision, and probably is down to Mike Portnoy, depending on how hands-on he was with his producer hat. (My guess would be very!)

But I agree, his spotlight isn't that crazy. Did seem a tad excessive every now and then, but he's very much the on-stage co-ordinator. Four other band members, of whom James LaBrie's frequently off-stage and John Myung could easily be mistaken for the venue's wallpaper, so they could easily have been neglected, and yet everyone feels very well represented. There are a couple of moments, looking back, when I've thought, "Really? We're cutting to Portnoy, now?" but they're few and far between. Mike Portnoy generally knows exactly which musician's in the limelight at any given moment in any given song, and the Dream Theater DVDs we've got are among the most intelligently-cut live DVDs I've seen. It favours Mike Portnoy now and then, but it really is occasional. Score, Budokan, Chaos in Motion for all its faults - they all basically look like portraits of five-piece bands, and that seems to be a surprisingly hard thing to nail.

He talked about being a part of the editing process on the DVDs, which is where all of the shots are edited together.  Just watch them with that in mind and you'll notice that he seems to, individually, have a lot more face-time than the other members. Yes, he was a showman. And I loved watching him play.  But I think this DVD will be a little more equal, as far as editing the shots of the band memebers.

I'll agree. It's been awhile since I've watched any DT dvds, but you're right - the officially released sets do have a lot of footage of everyone, and it's appropriate. It's not as bad as some of the recent Rush DVDs, with quick cuts and missing solos and exposed parts that should be shown. In some cases, fan bootlegs have better shots in terms of when to show which player!

-Marc.

The Presence of Frenemies

The other thing to keep in mind with the drumming is that, with the exception of JM, every other player has a bunch of screen time basically blocked out. You know JP and JR are going to be on screen for at least the bulk of their solos, and James will be prominently featured on the vocal sections. And yet MP was a big draw to the band, he sang backing, he played interesting parts, and he was always doing showy stuff, so in a sense, having him on a bit "extra" actually evens out the score--the other guys had those areas of screen time "built in" in a sense, so to make up for it, MP got a bit more time than you'd expect on the parts where there's no solo or vocals or whatever. Like Rob said, there is the very occasional "Okay MP, we get it, you love the camera"-type cut, but it's very occasional and I really don't think it's a big deal.

Just imagine JM having too much screen time....... yawn! [/troll]

Under A Glass Moon from Live in Tokyo proves that there is never enough John Myung screen time.

And before Never Enough jokes

Agreed.  I still can't believe how awful the editing was for LSFNY.  Myung is barely shown throughout almost all of Through Her Eyes, which is a travesty considering how awesome his fretless bass work in that tune is.
