What would be a good one?  Now, obviously, it is not an anniversary, but IF they were gonna do an "Evening With..." show and using roughly the same format (a few new songs at the beginning of Set 1, and then everything in chronological order until the encore), given what they have played in the last year, what would a good setlist be?  I am gonna do it that way, but still throwing the acoustic sets into the mix, and starting Set 2 with a new song as well, to make it more well-rounded and whatnot.

I'll go with:

Set 1
Bridges in the Sky
Build Me Up, Break Me Down
This Is the Life
Ytse Jam
Surrounded
Caught in a Web
Anna Lee (vocals and piano only)
Far from Heaven (vocals and piano only)
Through My Words
Fatal Tragedy
The Spirit Carries On

Set 2
On the Backs of Angels
War Inside My Head
The Test That Stumped Them All
Endless Sacrifice
These Walls
Beneath the Surface (acoustic set)
The Silent Man (acoustic set)
The Dark Eternal Night
Outcry
Breaking All Illusions

Encore
Metropolis

TheOutlawXanadu

Just the other day I was thinking about how three years from now, it will be Dream Theater's 30th Anniversary! Crazy!

wasteland

I took the liberty to edit your setlist to "fit my aims".  :D

Set 1
Bridges in the Sky
6.00
Build Me Up, Break Me Down
Lost Not Forgotten
Ytse Jam
Surrounded
~~~Vocals&Piano~~~
Far from Heaven
Piano Solo
Through My Words
~~~
Fatal Tragedy
Guitar Solo
The Spirit Carries On

Set 2
Metropolis
On the Backs of Angels
War Inside My Head
The Test That Stumped Them All
This Is The Life
The Root Of All Evil
~~~Acoustic Set~~~
The Silent Man
Beneath the Surface
~~~
Outcry
To Live Forever
Eve (*)
Breaking All Illusions

Encore
Learning To Live

* I am seriously convinced that Eve would be an awesome intro to BAI

If I had to come up with an orderly setlist, then:

BITS
BMUBMD
Ytse Jam
Surrounded
6.00
Peruvian Skies
Guitar Solo / TSCO
-
Outcry
OTBOA
This Is The Life
The Great Debate
Endless Sacrifice
The Root Of All Evil
Forsaken
The Count Of Tuscany

Encore:

Breaking All Illusions
Beneath The Surface

2nd Encore

Metropolis or LTL

Kotowboy

2 songs from each album = 22 songs.

That would be long enough I reckon.

Setlist Scotty

Interesting idea. Since this is just what I would like to see and based on what's been played on tour thus far (with 1 addition to make sure FII was essentially represented) and keeping the music to about 2 hour 45 minutes, here's what I came up with:

Bridges in the Sky
Build Me Up, Break Me Down
A Fortune in Lies
Another Day
Under a Glass Moon
6:00
Speak to Me
Through My Words
Fatal Tragedy
The Great Debate
Endless Sacrifice
~~~intermission~~~
The Root of All Evil
These Walls
The Dark Eternal Night
The Count of Tuscany
On the Backs of Angels
Lost Not Forgotten
Far From Heaven
Breaking All Illusions
~~~encore~~~

Quote from: BlobVanDam on November 13, 2015, 07:37:14 PMAs a basic rule, if you hate it, you must solely blame Portnoy. If it's good, then you must downplay MP's contribution to the band as not being important anyway, or claim he's just lying. It's the DTF way.

Scotty, when we posted in the "dream show" or whatever the thread name was, you did a "theme 1" with some different versions of IAW songs, I'm curious to see some follow ups but this is pretty sweet :metal

I dig all three, but I'd like to see some ACOS action. I wish they just... glued Another World somewhere in some sets in the future, perhaps as a half-medley with LtL (since ACOS and LTL seem to go well) or something like that. But JP and medleys.

Jamariquay

Hm. Score format then?

Bridges In The Sky
On The Backs Of Angels
A Fortune In Lies
Surrounded
6:00
Peruvian Skies
Through My Words
Fatal Tragedy
The Great Debate

== Intermission ==

Endless Sacrifice
These Walls
The Dark Eternal Night
Wither
Outcry
Far From Heaven
Breaking All Illusions

== Encore ==

Space-Dye Vest
Metropolis, Pt. 1

Scorpion

Score format would look like this, probably:

1. Bridges in the Sky
2. On the Backs of Angels
3. Another Won
4. The Killing Hand
5. Surrounded
6. Scarred
7. Trial of Tears
8. The Spirit Carries On
9. Blind Faith
10. In the Name of God
--- Intermission ---
11. Octavarium
12. The Ministry of Lost Souls
13. The Shattered Fortress
14. Beneath the Surface
16. Breaking All Illusions
--- Encore ---
17. Disappear
18. Space-Dye Vest
19. Metropolis
--- Encore 2 ---
20. Eve
21. A Change of Seasons

It's far too long, and doesn't really follow the Score format in the end, but fuck that.

Unlegit

Realistically, most of ADToE is going to be played. I'd say maybe one ballad and one mini-epic won't be played (and hopefully BMU, BMD, but that unfortunately probably will).

Bridges in the Sky
Build Me Up, Break Me Down (...)
On the Backs of Angels
A Fortune in Lies or Ytse Jam (w/ drum solo)
Surrounded or Under a Glass Moon
6:00 or Caught in a Web
New Millennium or Peruvian Skies
The Spirit Carries On or Through My Words / Fatal Tragedy
~Intermission~
War Inside My Head / The Test That Stumped Them All or The Great Debate
Endless Sacrifice or As I Am
The Root of All Evil or These Walls
Forsaken
The Count of Tuscany
Breaking All Illusions or Outcry
~Acoustic~
Wait for Sleep
The Silent Man
Far from Heaven or Beneath the Surface
~Encore~
Pull Me Under or Learning to Live
Metropolis Pt. 1 or the song not played above

That is a pretty long set, so if there was an "or" they would probably play the shorter of the two.

krands85

I started off following the Score setlist map (but obviously with extra ADTOE songs instead of extra 8VM songs and a song from SC and BC&SL) but whenever I make things like this, I always make them ridiculously long  :lol  So I ended up creating one that would be split over 2 nights - still basically following Score, but with a couple extra ADTOE songs at the beginning of the second nights set. Oh and I had to cheat a bit and put ACOS in as well

Night 1:
1. Bridges in the Sky
2. This is the Life
3. Another Won
4. A Fortune in Lies
5. Metropolis
6. Scarred
7. A Change of Seasons
8. Trial of Tears
9. The Dance of Eternity
10. The Glass Prison
11. In the Name of God
(1hr 59m)

Night 2:
1. Lost Not Forgotten
2. Beneath the Surface
3. Octavarium
4. The Ministry of Lost Souls
5. The Count of Tuscany
6. On the Backs of Angels
7. Outcry
8. Breaking All Illusions
---Encore---
9. Learning to Live
(1hr 58m)

An absolutely ridiculous set, epics galore  :biggrin:  Only 7 songs below 10 minutes  :blush  And I even toned it back a bit by having The Dance of Eternity for an instrumental break for James and TMOLS instead of ITPOE from Systematic Chaos.
Whoaaaahh, ohhh, ohhhhh. Whoaaaahh, ohhhhh, ohhhhhh. Waaah, ahhh, haaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaowwwwww

I'll think about it.

Bridges in the Sky
Under a Glass Moon
Endless Sacrifice
Peruvian Skies
Innocence Faded
Scarred
Scene Six: Home
Take the Time
Only a Matter of Time
-------------------- Intermission ---------------------------
On the Backs of Angels

Outcry
Lines in the Sand
Another Hand/The Killing Hand
Scene Eight: The Spirit Carries On
Breaking All Illusions
-----------------------------------------------------------------
ENCORE
Wait for Sleep
A Change of Seasons

About 3h 30min.

Nothing from BC&SL, but that's just great. And I didn't had space for anything from 8VM, or, I actually had TROAE, but then I saw TSCO in KevShmev's set and I thought that I want it too.

Sketchy

It'd amuse me if they put in a bass solo. Specifically: that really epic piece that JM plays on the Progressive Bass Concepts video (but I can't remember what it's called. All I can remember is that it has lovely chordal bits and some really epic harmonics bits).

So I'd go for something like this:
---First Set---
Crimson Sunrise
Innocence
OTBOA (~15mins)
LNF
Innocence Faded (~30mins)
Speak To Me
Bass Solo (That one I mentioned) (~40mins)
About To Crash
War Inside My Head
The Test That Stumped Them All
Peruvian Skies (the version with played on the octavarium tour with Wish You Were Here and For Whom The Bell Tolls)
UAGM(~1hr10)
- Accoustic set
Beneath The Surface
Wither (I reckon an accoustic version of this would be really good, maybe with the crescendo being a piano rather than guitar solo)
-Back to normal set
Carpe Diem
The Darkest Of Winters
Another World (~1hr30)
-----Second Set-----
Another Hand/The Killing Hand
Strange Deja Vu (~2Hr)
Through My Words
Fatal Tragedy (~2hr10)
LSOAD
TROAE
Drum Solo (~2hr30)
6:00
BITS (~2hr 45)
The Inevitable Summer
The Crimson Sunset
---First Encore---
Wait For Sleep
BAI (but if that WFS reprise in LtL got sneaked in somewhere there, that'd be amazing)
---Second Encore---
Metropolis (~3hr30)

Or at least I'd hope this'd turn out to be good...

They should retake Learning to Live because the F# needs a proper DVD release.

But, if JLB for some reason screws it up, we still won't have it :D

I don't understand why we "need" it, though. We know he can do it because we've heard it on boots, official, unofficial, random cellphone youtube videos. Most people who haven't done enough digging for a live version of Learning To Live (even if just youtube digging, which is the first thing we all do when we get into a band, honestly) is exactly the type of person who doesn't know what you're talking about when you mention the F# in LtL and doesn't have a clue that there's not a DVD including it.

theseoafs

Okay.  I went by the Score format, and tried to stick with songs we've been hearing on this tour.  I more or less ignored my own instincts to put in songs I really like or keep out songs I really dislike; it's my opinion that this set is very realistic.

Set 1 (~50 minutes)
1.  Bridges in the Sky
2.  This is the Life
3.  Ytse Jam
4.  Surrounded
5.  Caught in a Web
6.  Peruvian Skies
7.  The Spirit Carries On
-----
(~70 minutes)
8.  War Inside My Head/The Test That Stumped Them All
9.  Endless Sacrifice
10.  The Root of All Evil
11.  Forsaken
12.  The Count of Tuscany
13.  Wait for Sleep
14.  Far From Heaven
15.  Breaking All Illusions
-----
(~11 minutes)
16.  Learning to Live

That's a good setlist, no?  And it's actually not all that long, all things considered, so there's still room for one or two more songs (they could feasibly squeeze in Outcry, for instance).

Adami

Going with the Score format, I'm sure this will be similar to most of the other ones.

1. Bridges in the Sky
2. Build Me Up, Break Me Down
3. Fortune in Lies
4. Metropolis
5. Mirror (with Lie outro)
6. Peruvian Skies
7. Home
---------------------
8. The Glass Prison
9. Stream of Consciousness
10. The Root of All Evil
11. Who cares? (Seriously, terrible album, doesn't matter what they pick since they won't play Repentance anyway)
12. Whither
13. The Silent Man
14. Beneath the Surface
15. Breaking all Illusions
------------------------
16. ACOS. At the end of this song the graphics turn into a picture of Portnoy and the band all give him the middle finger, at which point Kevin Moore comes out....doesn't play any songs, just pisses on the picture.

The end.

If DT actually did a 30th anniversary setlist, it would likely be on the tour for DT13 in 2015. If they did that, I imagine a setlist like this, with guesses on what types on songs from DT12 and 13 appear:

DT13 Opener
DT13's single release
Status Seeker
Pull Me Under
Erotomania/
Trial of Tears/
Guitar Solo/
Through Her Eyes
Misunderstood
Honor Thy Father (w/ short drum solo)
Panic Attack
Constant Motion
A Rite of Passage
This is the Life
DT12 soft ballad
DT13 heavy sound, yeah!
DT13 epic #1
DT13 album closer
encore - The Best of Times
