Just to make sure - Is posting audience youtube videos banned, or banned just for the new songs, or not banned at all? :)

Banning youtube videos would not be a good commercial manouevre. The promotional impact of three new songs streaming everywhere on youtube would boost sellings of JP's new album. So, I believe he is in the best interest to allow videos. Don't know about the others. Are there any videos from the European leg with Steve Lukhater?

MoraWintersoul

I meant, on the thread. I know (or think I know) JP wouldn't ban videos to be posted on youtube ;D

You should PM Bosk. I think there will not be a problem but still, he's the boss..k

Just got back from watching this. A little review

Steve Morse: I was pleasantly surprised by Steve, I knew he was good but not that good. He played very well and also left plenty of time for Dave Larue to show the audience how to properly slap dat bass. He played a nice hoedown, a piece for classic guitar and bass and ended his set with Cruise Control from Dixie Dregs.

JP: Well, he's JP. His setlist was the same as described by devieira73. The new songs sounded really good and I think his next album will be as good as Suspended Animation. Mike was cool but I think he overplayed a bit.

Satch: You may not like the way he plays (I do and a lot) but the one thing no one can argue is that he knows how to put on a show.

Overall it was a very enjoyable show and a marvelous display of technicality. The 3 of them seemed to be having lots of fun and the crowd responded accordingly.

Pretty fucking cool! I hope he has the time to put out the new album soon!

Adami

So will MM be playing drums on his new album too?

I sure hope not.

Honestly he's just not my favorite band drummer (I think he's better as a clinic guy or something). Plus I was hoping for Thomas Lang or some new blood. I've only heard John play with 3 drummers up to this point, MP, MM and whoever played on his first CD.

First CD= Dave DiCenso. Phenomenal drummer

wasteland

Well, we all know that he offered the job to Marco Minneman firstly, but he was too busy with Steven Wilson so....  :lol

Yea I was quite fond of him. Just didn't know his name. He was a real breath of fresh air from hearing JP and MP non stop.

JP has also always worked with drummers who are connected in some way to Berklee. DiCenso is an Associate Professor of Percussion

Fair enough. I suppose JP is just more comfortable working with the same guys all the time :)

Nekov

Marco did say that JP told him that if he wasn't touring with him he wouldn't be on the record either so I would assume that since he is touring with MM, then he will also be on the new album.
And I agree with Adami here, I would much rather have someone else do it.

SystematicThought

Yeah, it would have been nice to see someone else on the throne, but MM just seems to be having fun that I can't get too down on the fact

Oops.  Meant to respond to this the other day and forgot.  JP is fine with it, so I am too.  Fan vids can be posted, even if they are new songs.

And normally I wouldn't mind, but JP IS one of my favorite guitarists, so I have higher hopes for him than most others.

Well, we're going a bit off topic, but I'll bite anyway.

Understading your personal preference, as far as my own, I actually like that he's playing with Mangini at this point.  And I think it makes sense in terms of big picture marketing strategy for both DT and JP individually.  Among the DT fan base, acceptance of Mangini has been overwheling and is probably as close to unanimous as one could reasonably expect.  For the most part, DT fans love him, so it bodes well having him play for JP right now.  Also, he's not done much recently outside of DT for people to really get a feel for his playing in other contexts.  This is a great way to get to see/hear him do some other stuff at a high level.  It also makes sense logistically since DT is his main gig, so unless he's busy with a side project right now (which he isn't), he is available.  And finally, we also know he has great playing chemistry with JP.  So for right now, Mangini just makes sense.

Somewhere down the road, I might like to hear JP play with somebody different as well just to hear some different things.  Right now, having only done a single DT album with John, Mangini is something different.  But in the future, yeah, I agree with you.  I really hope we get to see more of the drummer audition footage some day.  If nothing else, I would just like to get more of a feel for the chemistry with some of the other players.  To take Lang as an example, at times, it seemed like there was good playing chemstry between him and the DT guys (especially Jordan).  At other times, there did not seem to be any chemistry.  But it is hard to really gauge that because we are only seeing about 10 minutes worth of interaction in the form of a bunch of separate clips edited together from an experience that lasted a few hours.  To choose Roddy as another example, he talked about feeling like there was good chemistry between him and the guys, but the clips don't really portray that.

You're right Chatterton (may I call you Chatterton?) that it makes perfect sense in just about every way.

And it was the drummer auditions that make want to see someone other than MM. I just remember seeing JP really happy to jam with Thomas Lang but then JR didn't like him, etc. So at that point I developed the fantasy of Thomas Lang being the guy for JPs new solo project. So finding out he's just going the most safe and logical route, especially when you have a fantasy built up, can be disappointing.

Even if I understand it.

Edit: Think of it like a marriage. How disappointing is it when you find out your friend goes on vacation with his wife when he could have had a tropical get away with the hot austrian girl who's famous for banging the hell out of things?

Sure.  I don't mind.  But it is somewhat confusing for other people, since names you give me tend to stick.  I think there are a handful of people on the forum who legitimately think Malcolm is my real name now.  :lol

Adami

It is. Your name is Malcolm Reginald Chatterton the VII Esq.

I mean, I can call you Malcolm if you'd prefer. Or Mr. Chatterton.

If asked, I generally prefer to go by my middle name, so you can call me Reggie.

Ha! We know parts of the main melody already! You remember the Zoom promotion video posted a long time ago? The melodies and arpeggios he played in that video sounded way to well-developed to not be used (for either DT or a Solo album).

Having seen the DT shows and the G3 show I must say there wasn't really a difference. He didn't stick to the drumming in the album and to be honest I didn't hear anything different that what I had heard when he played with DT. As much as JP's solo album differs from DT, it's still prog metal so it's not like MM would be doing something that's far from what he would do in DT.

Out of the new songs my favorite has to be Cloud Ten, such a great song

Mike Mangini Drum Cam from the new song Zero Tolerancee

Loving the sound of this and its cool that someone actually is showing what Mangini is doing the whole time! And it's cool he's wearing a Hangar Shirt (Aquiles Priester's Band for those who didn't know)

"Drum cam" is a bit misleading.  When I think of a true "drum cam" video, I think of a view from above, behind, or the side of the drummer so you can actually see what he is doing behind the kit, rather that just a camera pointed at the drummer from the front of the stage.  But still very cool video nonetheless.  Thanks for posting it.  And cool about the Hangar shirt, too.

JP should have a second guitarist or a keyboard player during G3, it sounds very empty just with his guitar and Dave's bass...
