I'd like to see some before or after jamming on-stage, or maybe some footage from the studio (that we haven't seen already).

...........................................................singing ?  ???

Well obviously, but singing what? Aside from songs like The Spirit Carries on and Such, what the hell is a Choir going to do?

Hell, DT could barely find an interesting use for an Orchestra outside of just mimicking what JR did. So unless it's just to make JR's choir patch seem more real....seems pointless. Considering (based on score) he'd still be doing the choir patch underneath it anyway.

Very few of DT's songs would sound good backed by a full choir. DT's vocal lines aren't written to sound good sung in harmony by a choir, because they have a single competent lead vocalist.

iamtheeviltwin

Use the choir to do an A Capella version of ToT (ala Van Canto).  :)

A concept song/album for those who've served.  4 main parts- They join.  They serve.  They're out.  They adjust.

"They join.  They serve.  They're out.  They adjust."  The title?  The Derek Sherinian Story.

I can see a choir on Bridges in the Sky, On The Backs of Angels... Nightmare to Remember (Beautiful Agony... plus I can hear them singing the Continuum fills) Take The Time... Ministry of Lost Souls (maybe)... ACOS (certain sections)...

Quote from: BlobVanDam on November 13, 2015, 07:37:14 PMAs a basic rule, if you hate it, you must solely blame Portnoy. If it's good, then you must downplay MP's contribution to the band as not being important anyway, or claim he's just lying. It's the DTF way.
Quote from: TAC on July 10, 2024, 08:26:41 AMPOW is awesome! :P

KevShmev

Considering his choice of keyboard sounds at times, I shudder to think of what JR would do to the first 45 seconds of 2112. :lol :lol

robwebster

I have no doubt whatsoever that he'd wap out the MorphWiz. Sounds good to me!

philippaopao

John Petrucci (or all of the band members) playing at a live audience without his/their shirt on. :neverusethis:

I dunno, something about that seems kind of cheesy to me.

JayOctavarium

well there is a fine line between cheesy... and EPIC!

And they'd be on the cheesy side of that line.

Nightwish, Kamelot, Within Temptation, etc need choirs and orchestras live. Not DT.

However, as others have said, an all acoustic show would be amazing.

And yet using the choir on their Live Scenes From New York DVD was nothing short of epic.

Because TSCO has a choir part. DT's other songs don't have choir parts because they don't need them.

• an album that has songs with ethnic influences, which is something they initially planned on doing for album #6, but subsequently was dropped

I always felt that these world music lessons seeped into Train of Thought, particularly the lively Mediterranean riff in SOC and the middle-eastern vibe of ITNOG (and other areas), so I never felt it was 100% dropped per se.

Using a small gospel choir on one chorus of one song isn't the same as doing a whole show with a real choir. It would be like wanting theresa to sing on every song. Just wouldn't work.

Redo a studio version of WDADU with James at the helm. Give James all the time he needs to do it in his old style without hurting his voice.

This.

I'd also like to see them with a different vocalist before it's all said and done.

Begin the excommunication proceedings on this one.....

At this point DT without JLB would not be DT. If you disagree with this, well, then you are just wrong.

Although I'm pretty sure that at this point, JLB can kill WDADU no problem without hurting his voice at all.

I totally see where you're coming from. A lot of people jumped ship when MP left.

theseoafs

As much as Portnoy's spontaneous departure might make it seem like DT's lineup can change at any time, in truth MP was the band's only loose cannon. Whatever tension was lurking within the DT camp left with MP, and as it stands the entire band seems to be very happy with their direction and with everybody else in the band. I'm not going to say it's impossible that JLB would ever leave, but it seems to me to be very, very unlikely.

TAC

Musically I don't really have any special requests, BUT I would like to see them recommit to further Ytsejam releases! It was inconsistent WITH MP in the band. I hope it really doesn't fade from existence.
Quote from: wkiml on June 08, 2012, 09:06:35 AMwould have thought the same thing but seeing the OP was TAC i immediately thought Maiden or DT related
Quote from: Stadler on February 08, 2025, 12:49:43 PMI wouldn't argue this.

Aythesryche

Something I've been curious about for awhile now. I wonder if someone like JR or JP would be up for a side project of my choosing. Would take about a week and lets say I would pay for all the expenses plus a bonus to them. Like, I pay for the recording time, their time (Whatever they'd want, 100k, 500k USD+ each) etc. All they would have to do is just do their thing and come up with something interesting with the other people I choose to toss into the mix. That would be incredibly fun.

El Barto

The only thing I'm really strongly interested in is seeing them throw some fun and spontaneity back into their live show.  That horse has already been beaten senseless, and it's probably not going to happen anyway, so we'll just move along now.

There is an idea I had for LTE, but I think DT could also pull it off fairly well.  When LTE toured, they played two improv jams a night.  I thought it would have been cool if they'd taken one of those slots and began an improv jam, which they would develop and refine over the course of the tour.  It would have started off exactly like one from any of the shows, but over the next five or ten shows,  however long it took,  it'd have evolved into an actual song.  Since that's how they wrote to begin with, it'd have been an interesting look into the process.

DT doesn't seem to be into pushing boundaries anymore, so I don't see it happening.  However, they have a couple of advantages were they to do such a thing.  For one, after a couple of nights of evolution, it'd be interesting to hear JLB try to wrangle out some vocal melodies.  Consider how different the vocal melodies were for the various incarnations of ACoS.  Hell, he seems like a fairly intelligent and articulate guy, so I suspect after a couple of nights he could fart out some halfway decent lyrics, as well.

The other advantage I could see is that their tours are quite a bit longer.  If they were to devote 8 minutes per show to creativity, they'd have an album's worth of material by the end of a tour.  While it'd be different and probably quite a bit less polished than a normal DT album, I think that would be quite interesting for a change.  They could release it as a non-label EP or something.

It'd also make things very interesting for tapers of the world.

Alas, I get the impression that DT fans probably would probably rather hear another regular song than some improv each night.  Not me, but to each his own.

JayOctavarium

Isn't that how Moon Bubbles / Bombay Vindaloo came about?

Ben_Jamin

I'd like to see an Epic only tour or one-off show, consisting of:

ITPOE
Octavarium
ITNOG
TCOT
6DOIT (maybe)
TMOLS
ACOS

TheGreatPretender

This just occured to me. Everyone keeps talking about them re-recording When Dream And Day Unite, and while that would be nice, what I would REALLY like to see is them re-recording the songs from the Majesty demos.
