That's not cool to abandon what you said. Stand firm on your convictions as anything less is unbecoming. You'll piss people off, you'll have people agreeing with you and some in between. All of that doesn't matter as long as you stay firm in your beliefs. If someone else has an opinion that differs from yours, just be cool about it. I might not agree with you but I'm not going to be an asshole and belittle you for it (Not saying you did). That seems to be where issues start, aye?

I appreciate the advice, but to be clear, I wasn't backing away from what I said, but just saying.... forget that I said it because I wasn't in the mood to defend it.  If someone agreed and wanted to continue with the debate, fine, but at that point, I was done.  Then, I got a surge of energy (as you could tell).  But, yeah, I was more saying, "whatever, believe what you want."

QuoteBack on topic, I think everything has the potential to instigate change. Peoples disposition changes, instigating alternate thought that leads to something suggested verbally differently than what would have been thought or said if she didn't die, thus having the potential to change from an original route before the modifier (Whitneys death). Will DT get less attention or more attention? Who knows and no one will ever be able to tell because there will be no point of reference to compare if the Grammys were to take place without the death of Whitney Houston. Based on that logic, its a safe bet that something will change but it's not going to have any sort of negative impact for the band imo.

Well, I don't even mean ONLY for their popularity, but it must suck to have something like this even happen the night before.  I'd be bummed out, like I said.

I see the OP point but I don't think Michael Jackson is comparable. Is Whitney Houston is famous for anything other than that awful song from The Bodyguard? then she was famous for crack and being beat up by husband so she became a tabloid character.

Saying that Whitney Houston has "nothing to do with the Grammys" is kind of ridiculous.

The 28th Grammy Awards

Album of the Year    Nominated  "Saving All My Love for You"
Best Pop Vocal Performance, Female    Won
"You Give Good Love" Best R&B Vocal Performance, Female Nominated
Best R&B Song  Nominated

The 29th Grammy Awards    "Greatest Love of All"    Record of the Year    Nominated

The 30th Grammy Awards
Album of the Year    Nominated
"Didn't We Almost Have It All"    Song of the Year Nominated
"I Wanna Dance with Somebody
(Who Loves Me)"
Best Pop Vocal Performance, Female    Won
"For the Love of You"    Best R&B Vocal Performance, Female    Nominated

The 31st Grammy Awards    "One Moment in Time"    Best Pop Vocal Performance, Female Nominated

There's more.  Do I really need to copy and paste all of them?
Let me rephrase that. Her death will not affect who wins what.

So, what did Michael Jackson get famous for other than his singing?  (Don't tell me that he didn't become a tabloid character...)

IMHO Whitneys voice > Michaels voice. Check her back catalogue.

Beat-Nick

In the Music World Whitneys Death IS MASSIVE   ..No Getting away from it.

Will it affect thr Grammys..Sure as hell it will

BUT..Awards for films, Music.Books, Best Painting..who gives a Shit..If I like summat, I Like it, If it wins an award..who cares honestly.
Its not like DT pick up a grammy and suddenly everyone thinks their a kick ass band..They are still only a Kick Ass band to us...the ones who love em already..sure it would be great for DT to get some acclaim for what they do  from this body..but to me I still love em..& I couldn't give a shit what the rest of the world thinks of them..

Whitney had a fantastic voice back in the day..I'm not choked........but it is sad.

I mean, seriously?  I'm not trying to be insensitive.  I've been defending Whitney Houston all night on Facebook to "who cares, she was a crackhead anyway" morons.... but, what a frigging time for this to happen.  Even if DT does win the Grammy - will anyone really care?  We're going to be hearing about this for weeks.  Ugh.

Yeah, I mean, fuck, now DT definitely won't be on tv.  I'm sure they are pissed too ::)

Kotowboy

Which category is DT nominated in ?

Unless it's best female vocal  I think they can rest easy.

Mladen

Of course we'll be hearing a lot about this, but I seriously doubt DT would get that much talk even if Whitney was still alive and well. It's not like they're the biggest stars on the Grammy's, nothing changed.

And it's different with Michael Jackson, he died right after BC&SL was released and that affected the sales. It's been months since the release of ADTOE.

Don't forget, it isn't just Michael Jackson and Whitney Houston.  Also LSFNY and 9/11.

So basically we can conclude that celebrities and terrorists hate Dream Theater.

hefdaddy42

Well, no.  But death always lurks around the corner.

Michael Jackson's death caused DT to "only" be #6 back in 2009.  A lot of people said they would have charted higher, but Jackson's death caused a bit of a surge in his record sales the same week Black Clouds came out.

Fuck the charts. Isn't 6 still very high for an album, which has six songs, and only two are less then ten minutes long?

And show me somebody, who went to record store to buy BC&SL, but heard, that Michael Jackson is dead and bought Thriller instead.

My point is, that DT had sold somewhat same amount of records the first week, if they had released BC&SL a week earlier. They just were five positions lower than what was possible, because Michael Jackson sold more records.

R.I.P. Whitney Houston.

Why even bring Joe Paterno into this? He did nothing wrong and was one of the greatest college football coaches of all time. If you want to hate on Michael Jackson go ahead, but I would hope most people remember him for the music he created. Instead of the issues he had in the later years of his life.

You should be more worried about P-Diddy living off another dead musician SE.  He's doing it again tonight.  My ears will be assaulted again.

Er, she was already a huge pop star before that song.

It is truly sad that DT is associated with some of the disrespectful bullshit happening in this thread.

It wouldn't surprise me at all. :rollin

Dellers

She was a drug addict for years, I'm surprised she didn't pass away earlier to be honest. Because of her problems I have considered her as practically dead for a long time (along with other people in similar situations).

Quote from: rumborak on February 11, 2012, 10:23:35 PM
Dunno dude, I think you're making too much out of this. An artist who many already figured dead died now. That tribute performance will be that, they're not gonna make this a Whitney Houston Grammy Award.
Besides, in all likelihood DT's "big moment" will be those 5 seconds of the song they play so that not everybody in audience asks "what the fuck is a Cream Theater?"

rumborak
Well, I wanted to watch the Grammy show to catch Maceo Parker's performance, but it turns out he and others won't be performing at all because of her death. Looks like that will be the main focus of the evening to me.

I don't get it. Even if they did win and Whitney Houston hadn't died it's not like the mainstream media was suddenly going to be clammering over themselves for an exclusive interview with DT or whatever.

But you can't deny that it would squash any chance of a bit of publicity for the band.

THAT IS EXACTLY THE FUCKING POINT.

Why has it only been you and maybe one or two other people who understand this point?

edit..

Nevermind, you, "really.....dude"-ed me earlier in the thread.  Maybe you're coming around now?
