James sounded a bit weak at the beginning of the set and took a couple of songs to warm up, but was pretty much firing on all cylinders once he got about 3-4 songs into the set.  I have no issues whatsoever with the fact that he didn't go for the F# in LTL.  He didn't feel like he could hit it, so he went for a harmony line instead of going for it and missing.  That's the mark of a smart singer who is in touch with what his voice is capable of at a given moment, unlike some past performances where James would just go for notes and see what happens.  Overall, very good performance.

I've heard some knocks on him for ACOS, and I thought he did pretty well.

I don't mind the fact he didn't attempt the F#. I'd rather him sing something alternate instead of going for it and falling flat (pun intended :p ). But I do have a problem with his vocals over the solo right after that. It's like he thought it would make up for the F# somehow, but instead just drags it down further.

And agreed with what people have said about his vocals on The Mirror. His vocals on the verse starting from "hypocrite" are fantastic. So powah. I love his growlier vocals on LSFNY.

That was his standard way to deal with the F# section from 2000 to 2002. Maybe he along with the band felt like reverting to the original vocal idea to compensate the "loss" of the high note.

This.  Plus it was awesome.

I really like his performance on "The Mirror" but at the end of the song when he starts doing the "lying until the end..." part, I cringe a little because it starts being barked instead of sung, imo.

Madman Shepherd

I love how he varied Metropolis a bit.

"Without pain, without sooooooooooorrrrrooooooooooasamannnnnnnnnnn..."

Really powerful and emotional.

Overall, his performance was especially special

@OP:

In LSFNY James delivers and exceptionally good performance considering that 1999-2000 was almost certainly his worst extended period vocally wise. While I still would pick Score's singing over LSFNY's, I agree that it's cool to have a last official recording of his old and somehow "true" voice.

johncal

His voice is just as "true" now. When I listen to his I&W voice vs ADTOE, I much prefer the more mature older (in years) voice of ADTOE. But that's just my opinion. I feel there's much more confindence and thought that goes into it now.

Score is the best IMO, James sound good on LIve Scenes but the backing vocal of John and Mike are often way off and for me f up o few of the songs

jcmistat

Have to disagree and say Score is James best vocal performance. I just listened to Once in a LIVEtime and he's messing up a bunch.

reneranucci

My favorite live performance from James. And I don't see any problem with him not singing the F# (which is just a note and doesn't have any intrinsic value), the way he delivers that part in Learning to Live with JP's guitar in the background is great.

From the albums I own, I would rank his performances as follows:

LSFNY
LAB
Score
LiT
OIALT
WDADRU

MasterLomaxus

Either this, or Score are definitely his best, as far as am concerned.

Chaos in Motion has the best singing by any musician, male or female, ever.

surely live in tokyo

Totally. LSFNY and everything after it pale in comparison to the strength he exhibited on this beast of a live performance. I need to go back and listen to OiaL a little bit more to see if it's got anything on LiT.

2Timer

Yeah, it's pretty awesome. Almost as awesome as the hypnotist's performance. :lol

You know what's hilarious? The closing scene of the guy in his home. So... laughably bad. What was Portnoy thinking? It's just awful in every way.

Most fans maybe doesn't agree but I hate that whole part of the DVD. The whole "let's tell the story with images and story-telling"-view. It didn't work. I love the album Scenes From A Memory but if I buy a video of the band playing a concert, I wanna see the band. Not some actors trying to act to the story.
