That Mike Mangini's faith comes up a lot in his interviews is refreshing to me -- especially after the PR disaster that is Mike Portnoy.

How does having religious faith make for better PR exactly? They're musicians, not presidential candidates.

Because it feels like you can read a Mike Mangini interview and read an honest answer.  No passive-aggression.

Most interesting part of the interview - Mangini's no longer speaking like he's the new guy.  At least in his mind, he's locked in.

I agree that MM's answers seem honest and there is no trace of passive-aggression but I don't see how this has anything to do with his faith. He just seems like a good dude.

And agreed, good to see that he's coming into his full-time member role.  :tup

He didn't say that it made for better PR. He said that he was appreciative of the fact that MM brings up his religious beliefs frequently (which he likes) vs Portnoys disasterous PR. Two different things.

It fact it sounds like MM's beliefs might be negative PR to some based on your response. And actually before being presidents or musicians, they are PEOPLE and as such they should be able to state how they feel just like we do on this forum. Should they only make musical comments as musicians when they are asked non-musical questions as in this interview?

If people don't like how DT or Portnoy or anybody else is they don't need to follow them. Portnoy pissed me off so I'm not a fan of his any more. Don't go to his site, don't listen to his bull shit. And I do say that on this site, but this isn't a Portnoy fan site. He's no longer a DT member plain and simple.

I would find it very hard to call myself a DT "fan" if all I ever did was bitch and criticise them like some on this board do. Fans are supposed to be supportive. Yes, with differences about certain songs they might like more or less, but we ought to be cheerleaders for them NOT the opposite.

I dunno, the way it was worded made it sound like "bringing up faith in response to questions" == "good PR". If that's a misinterpretation then I apologize.

And to clarify - I have no problem with his or anybody else's beliefs. In fact, as a fan, it's always cool to hear these personal tidbits from the guys. I was responding merely to the assertion that having faith leads to good PR. If theseoafs was just saying the same thing as me (i.e. him bringing up his faith is him sharing personal info which makes him more personable to the fans) then I agree, and once again apologize for derailing the thread lol

Yeah, I didn't mean to say that "bringing up faith in response to questions = good PR", obviously. That's ridiculous. What I meant (sorry if it wasn't clear) was that I greatly prefer Jesus talk to whatever it is that MP does, and not that Jesus talk is inherently good or bad.

I never really understood this line of thinking. I am well within my rights as a fan of any band to criticize to my heart's content. You definition of fan connotes fanboy and reeks of the sentiment that spawned the lyrics of Never Enough. Fans have no obligation to "cheerlead" blindly.

Anyway it was a neat interview.

Personally, I'm proud to be a DT fanboy and not some cynic that just comes on these boards to bitch and complain about everything DT does. THOSE kind of people are what Never Enough is refering to. Personally, I have no idea where you stand as a fan, but I hope it's 90/10 positive :)

And then MM turned to JP, both sharing an awkward foolish smile as MM points to him and JP then throws his hands up in the air as if he was just caught red handed. JP says in a cool tone, "What can I say? It was me!"

Great interview indeed.

And that JR moment sounds really horrible, it must have been terribly embarrassing for him but hilarious for the others in a very strange way.

Zydar

Anybody have any pics of JR playing the show in that awkward position?

I'll say this once from my point of view. WHO CARES?! If his faith and the fact that he is a good person seem incapable is something I think those who find it incompatible to deal with. For others, it's a non-issue so why grind the horns over it?

Interesting to hear JR's historical event, made me want to be there with him and I'm not that into classical.

Semantics? :neverusethis:

Mangini: If I recorded a duet with an artist outside of the progressive-rock genre

Petrucci: For me, including the song Beneath The Surface on the new album was something unique and special. It is a song that exposes a very personal subject matter in a song structure that is a bit different from what DT is known for.

Here is a great clip of JP and JLB trying to fix JR's tilted keyboard.  :lol

Did you see JP saying something to JR in his ear? Ten bucks he said "Jordan, If I even attempt to tap into my strength to fix your keyboard stand, I'm not only going to destroy the keyboard, but I'll probably end up transforming into my true form and it just might destroy everyone in the audience. Sorry, man."

What is JP's true form?

And before you say "bear", no, his human form is his bear form.

And before you say "bear", no, his human form is his bear form.

His true form is a 50 arm beast with 12 heads that breathes fire and a 100 string guitar that bursts out of his chest. Each note that he plays makes him larger and his size increases exponentially. When he reaches the stratosphere he plays every known music note in existence and explodes with the force of 1 trillion tons of TNT, destroying the world as we know it. So, to put a name on that form? I'm not sure... But I hope its the last thing I see before I die.
