Putting geographical anomalies aside, this video is amazing.

Lowdz

Whenever I watch his solos I keep having to laugh out loud at the awesome things he does. Mike Mangini:Dream Theater drummer.

johncal

Yeah, MM's really upped his game again with the new twists in the solo.

Mladen

Damn, once again, that drum solo blew me away.  :hefdaddy

Also, I love how they're all getting up on the drum riser, even Jordan.  :metal

krands85

Damn, I still have to remind myself that the video is not in fast forward mode whenever I see some parts of his solos  :eek :lol

ES was brilliant too, I hope they don't drop it from the set for the European tour - would really love to see it live.
Whoaaaahh, ohhh, ohhhhh. Whoaaaahh, ohhhhh, ohhhhhh. Waaah, ahhh, haaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaowwwwww

When I think that some say MM has no groove, it makes me wanna laugh so hard! MM's the man, for sure! And his solo has evolved and improved (if tha was possible)! Kuddos for a man that's never staisfied with what he has (contrary to another drummer...but that's another story... :))

Same lame argument used against literally every instrumentalist in DT.  Really annoys me when people spew that, and it's nothing more than a weak attempt to hate on some very talented people because they can't find anything else to hate on.  Almost every negative comment will be either "they have too much complexity/wankery" or "they have no soul/rhythm/groove/etc".  Watch some videos showcasing a JP solo and read the comments and you will want to lock yourself in a padded room just to keep away from such mouth-breathers (the ones calling him awful and claiming Slash or Kirk Hammet leagues better are particular grating personally).  Opinions and all I know, but man... ~_~

Also, Mangini is an epic drummer and has an awesome personality to match.  Always enjoy listening to him (well, all of them really) talk, but he definitely seems to like conversation more, which is a good trait for someone who was teaching!  JP, for instance, seems pretty shy and doesn't seem like he likes being on camera all that much as odd as that is for someone in his line of work.

PS:  Nothing wrong with Slash or Hammet before I get blasted!  :lol

It was cool, though I'm really not a fan of straight-up drum solos.

That's how it is for me. The drummer can be as good as they can be, there's a natural limit for me to how much I will enjoy the solo.

Mostly the same for me, especially the typical solos where there's just endless fast fills. A solo that focuses on groove is much more enjoyable and is easier to dig

SystematicThought

He did an amazing job. Considering too how he said he was deathly ill during these shows

Hey, I very much enjoyed the drum solo at the last gig I saw.

Yep, I'd been waiting for that piss break since the show started.

:lol

That's what I used to say about the AA suite. Had they ever played it at a show I attended, it would have been the longest beer + piss break ever.

Mangini is a fantastic drummer and super-technical and everything.  :tup

But, I find his drumsolos completely un-interesting to listen to.

Even as a fellow drummer.

Of course your opinion is respected, but i believe that MM's solo is very enjoyable, since it has a musical structure and some cool grooves.
On the other hand, i never enjoyed MP's solos, they seemed completely uninteresting and boring to me.

Regardless of the latest drama, MP is still a phenomenal drummer. However, you are right about his solos. Nothing but a barrage of quadruplets and rumble

Kotowboy

I guess i'm just the kind of drummer that prefers some kind of ostinato under a solo.

Mangini's current live solo just sounds like a demonstration of rudiments and technique, so it's hard for me

To enjoy it on a musical level. I appreciate it on a technical level but It doesn't move me on an emotional or

Entertaining level ( if that makes any sense ).

I'm not a fan of drum solos at all, but I loved his solo in Philly. It didn't seem like just a drum solo; it seemed musical. And I really didn't think I'd enjoy watching one of his solos on youtube, but that was awesome. What a monster!
