Hey everyone,
We have just reached the final month of 2011, which means two things: Christmas and Yearly Awards!
So I was wondering what the DTF community thought of this question. I'm pretty sure the consensus is ADToE is an awesome album, but is it the best released this year? It was a pretty good year for music (in my opinion), so there are other competitors for this title even if you just listen to prog/metal (Haken's Visions and Arch/Matheos Sympathetic Resonance come to mind, though there's also Opeth's Heritage and many other great releases).
Anyway, though I suspect the majority will vote yes, I'm really interested to see what the dissenters say XD. So please say how incredible ADToE is, why you can't decide or which other album won you over!

BlobVanDam

Nope, but probably top 3 or 5. It's a strong album, but several others that have excited me more this year.

ZKX-2099

It would have been if Deconstruction was not released this year.

Zydar

Yes it is, by far the best one from 2011.

For those who are saying things like "Not even in my top 3/5/10/16.78", I am sincerely interested in knowing which albums you'd rank above it.

Is it hard to believe that people might not rank it so high?  It really did nothing for me and there are multiple albums from 2011 that I would rank above it, for instance;

Redemption - This Mortal Coil
Arch/Mateos - Sympathetic Resonance
Stratovarius - Elysium
Scar Symmetry - The Unseen Empire
Amorphis - The Beginning of Time
Toby Hitchcock - Mecury's Down
Work of Art - In Progress
Mastodon - The Hunter
Trivium - In Waves
Fullforce - One

There's probably a few others too.  This is purely my opinion, ADTOE, just hasn't done anything for me at all.

m0hawk

Yes, it is. Closely followed by Steven Wilson's "Grace For Drowning", which is an absolute masterpiece. I know this is the wrong board to gush over another artist, but I have a feeling DT fans will adore this album. It's pure art.

Not at all hard to believe that not everyone thinks ADToE is the best album released this year. Else this poll/thread would make absolutely no sense. I want to know people's preferred albums so I can compare my taste to theirs and maybe discover some new album/CD.

ADTOE isn't just my album of the year, its my album of the decade.  :metal

missedthepoint

No absolutely not, Visions was far, far better and perhaps my favorite album since SFaM. I think I listened to ADToE almost every day for a month but now i can only really stand to listen to TITL.

necrotomist

Deconstruction wins...

ADTOE close second though

Jirpo

Probably number 1 but definitely top 5.

nikatapi

krands85

Definitely. But there has been a lot of great competition too. Probably my favourite year for new music ever.
Whoaaaahh, ohhh, ohhhhh. Whoaaaahh, ohhhhh, ohhhhhh. Waaah, ahhh, haaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaowwwwww

Super Dude

Insufficient data. The only "new" albums I've gotten this year have been ADTOE and The Dear Hunter's TCS, and it's hard to decide between the two.
:superdude:

Jamesman42

Yes, but competition was fierce

TCS, M/M, BIBI, and some other stuff. But ADTOE remains the winner.
\o\ lol /o/

No. I feel the following are better:

Haken - Visions (This one is by far the best)
Karmakanic - In a perfect world
Devin Townsend - Ghost
Pendragon - Passion
Black Country Communion - Black Country Communion 2

skydivingninja

Absolutely not.  All these albums are definitely better, IMO:

Mastodon-The Hunter
Eisley-The Valley
Devin Townsend-Ghost
Steven Wilson-Grace for Drowning
Thrice-Major/Minor
The Dear Hunter-The Color Spectrum
Bright Eyes-The People's Key

In rough order.

Dublagent66

Absolutely not.

Symphony X - Iconoclast

SlickSy

It's a good album, but it didn't make my number 1 spot. Grace for Drowning did.

Mladen

Definitely number one for me. Some other bands that have put out great albums I really liked: Stratovarius, They might be giants, Yes, Radiohead, Van der Graaf Generator - unfortunately, most of these aren't even close. I seriously doubt that some other albums I'm going to check out soon are gonna change my mind about A Dramatic turn of events being the album of the year.

jingle.boy

Not many people here have/know it, but Elinoire by Flaming Row is my album of the year.  I'd say ADTOE is #2 or #3.
Quote from: ReaperKK on July 28, 2018, 07:12:37 PMI didn't know I could handle another 10 inches and it was rough but in the end I'm glad I did it.

Zantera

lolno.

In all seriousness, out of the ~75 albums I've heard in 2011, I did enjoy DT's, but it would probably not be top50 out of those 75.
In my spare time I make music! Check it out. :)

Dr. DTVT

If it would have been released last year, definately.  At this point the competition is too fierce and I still got albums coming in (because it's not the end of the year yet).  I'm going to guess it won't be and lose out to Flaming Row, but this year was incredibly awesome for new music and being outside the top 10 this year is nothing to be ashamed of.

Lotion

Not sure, for me it's between Angles by The Strokes and ATDOE. Can't really rank them, they're both awesome!

Anonymous

I have to say no, cuz I only became a DT fan over the summer. Beady Eye's album Different Gear Still Speeding or Noel Gallagher's Album are my favorites this year. But Wasting Light by Foo Fighters is gotta be my number 1.

Great year for music. Lots of solid music. My favs this year:

Steven Wilson-Grace For Drowning
Devin-Deconstruction
Redemption-Mortal Coil
Pain of Salvation-Road Salt 2
Opeth_Heritage
Haken-Visions

But my top 2:

Neal Morse-Testimony 2
and yes, DT ADTOE is #1

Perpetual Change

It's probably the 2nd or 3rd. I just liked Bon Iver's new record so much that nothing can take first place but that, though DT's Ghost and ADTOE are battling for 2nd.

Come to think of it, DT rarely ever release my "album of the year." BC&SL was, in my opinion, far inferior to dredg's TPTPTD. I remember enjoying Paradise Lost much more than Systematic Chaos before that. Finally, Octavarium probably was not even in my top 5 for 2005 (though it could have been, since back then I didn't really buy music as much and I was exploring older stuff anyway).

What makes DT special is regardless of all that their releases always wind up somewhere in my top 10. It's that kinda consistency that has kept me in the "fan tent" for the last 7 years or so.

KevShmev

My top 2 of the year will be Steven Wilson's Grace for Downing and Neal Morse's Testimony Two.

DT will probably have to duke it out with Devin Townsend's Ghost for the other top 3 spot.

?

I'd say yes, although Amorphis and Opeth released great albums as well.
