This is a seriously awesome cover. I think it kinda got lost among the other covers and the BC&SL release, but it deserves alot of praise. Ive been on a big Queen kick lately and DT absolutely nailed these songs and when Brian May says this you are definitely doing something right:

Bloody Hell .... !

Dream Theatre seem to be amazing ... thanks - I had not heard this ...
Beautifully done ... great vocals ... great musicianship ... great production ...
and ..
Cop that solo in Tenement Funster !!
Ouch !
Thanks ... ! Love it. and it's a great compliment to us ...
Ok ... I have to hear more now.

Great to hear someone 'do' our stuff, and fathom all our conjuring tricks, and then add some great new ones of their own.

my mate Rog called (totally unprompted last week) "The best Queen cover job ever".

Also John Petrucci is on FIRE on these songs, there are some serious solos and how about that segue back into the verse at 5:27?, perfect.
James also does a great job, cause if you think about it, he covered a song with Freddie Mercury singing and didn't crash and burn, but did quite good instead. MP recreated the backing vocals good as well.

appreciates immensely  :hefdaddy

anyone else?

I really love this one. I think my favorite out of the covers is Take Your Fingers From My Hair.

namgalsipsclar

I can't think of many covers in general that are better than this one. LaBrie is incredible on it as well, especially in the Lily of the Valley section

Orbert

Before I heard it, I had my doubts, mostly because "no one can cover Freddy Mercury".  That, and "no one can cover Brian May".  We're talking about two very distinctive artists.

I was pleasantly surprised to be dead wrong on both counts.  The guys really nailed this one.

easily my favorite part of this medley.

King Postwhore

My cousin who is a huge Queen fan was so psyched to see DT cover that 3 part album cuts.  Though just a week before he told me he was done with cover songs and then DT hit him where it counted. :lol
"I don't like country music, but I don't mean to denigrate those who do. And for the people who like country music, denigrate means 'put down'." - Bon Newhart.

Rob801

I really like that one as well but I really... reeallly like all the covers on that album (but Queen and Fingers best).

I had never cared much for DTs covers before that, not that they weren't good execution wise, but I always just preferred DT doing DT and always liked the original artist version better that DTs cover. That wasn't the case with BC&SL where I like most of the cover songs as well or better than the originals (exception might be King Crimson) and found myself listening to the covers more than the DT songs (at times)...

As a matter of fact I was listening to it on the way to work this morning... probably the first time since ADTOE came out

DebraKadabra

Out of the BC/SL covers, this is my favorite.  Never thought that James could channel Freddie so well, especially on Lily of the Valley. :hefdaddy
Look at all us freaks cluttering your city streets
Still scalping their ticket-less applause
Spun monkeys on the railroad track, take me to the caine field; I walk along pick my spiderbite
Basically Kyoko Kirigiri

El Barto

Best part of BC/SL, by far.  Honestly,  several of the covers are better than any of the BC/SL original material, IMO.

Yeah I had a great time listening to the originals and comparing them. All done really well. The Zebra cover is my favorite.

iamtheeviltwin

As a huge Queen fan, this cover is by far my favorite from BC&SL.  Although I find myself coming back to the cover of "To Tame a Land" quite often.

Honestly I find myself picking up the Cover and Instrumental discs from BC&SL more than the main disc itself.

YES!!

I wasn't familiar with these tracks so I dug them out before the DT release. When I first heard Lily Of the Valley, I thought there's no way James is going to hit this, but he simply nailed it. I'm so glad that MP didn't try and recreate Roger Taylor's vocals on Tenement Funster!

When I first got BC&SL I thought the CD with the covers was better than the actual album. I still do think that and listen to the covers occasionally and this one really does stand out.

nice to hear brians reaction to the cover as well  :tup not surprising james did a good job on it as freddie is one of his favorites :yarr

I would love more covers on future CD's or special covers only release would be awesome. I wonder what Mike Mangini's influences and favorites are?

I know MP was definitely a driving force in doing covers. The Cemetary Gates Pantera cover should have only been DT and Russell Allen, Mustaine blew that solo so hard.

Lowdz

Great version but they did have a great source to work from. Jeff Scott Soto did a great version in a medley at the Queen Convention a few years ago.
I really enjoyed the covers disc. The only track I wasn't too into was the King Crimson song, because it was a King Crimson song.

I agree, a complete waste of time.

My other complaint is that I wish they had rerecorded James vocals for To Tame A Land during the Covers CD session.

Seriously?  "Larks' Tongues in Aspic" is a classic Crimson tune.  They did an excellent job.

O, I understand. Not being a KC fan, I'm not aware of their material, but there HAS to be something more interesting than Lark Toungues.
I'm sure the non Maiden fans skip To Tame A Land, so I'm not protesting KC, I just think the song lacks....something interesting.

That said, I love the KC inspired intro/outro to Raw Dog.

You really have to mention To Tame a Land as one of the best on The Covers CD. Especially the way John Myung gets to shine!

BlobVanDam

A really good cover. I was amazed at how well LaBrie nailed the vocal style, especially the vibrato, and the softer voice, and I had no doubt that Petrucci could pull off Brain May's guitar parts (I mean that as a compliment to JP, and not a dig at the great Brian May!).
I'd never heard the original song/s until after I heard the cover, but I think they struck a good balance between remaining true to the original, and adding their own elements to create something a bit different.

100%, my favourite dt cover, jlb nails it without trying to be mercury, that amazes me with most of the dt covers, jlb is great in singing the songs of so different vocalists without trying to copy them, but always sounding great.
I think that is much harder for a singer than an instrumentalist :hefdaddy
Did i tell you that i love jlb? :heart

Mladen

I don't think I'm going too far when I say this cover features some of LaBrie's best performances ever, it's that mind-blowing. Petrucci did a fantastic job with the solos, and Portnoy's backing vocals are incredible as well. I'm not a Queen fan, but if more of their songs are like this, maybe I should give them a chance - the problem is that I'm familiar with some of their big hits, and I'm not too impressed with those...

Orbert

Get one of their albums, an older one like Queen II or A Night at the Opera.  Their albums are where they really shine.

Pols Voice

Time to turn in my DT fan card: I haven't heard any of the BCSL special edition covers.

You should give them a listen especially if you like the bands that they covered. If you know the songs more power to you.

I'm sure they did. I just don't like King Crimson.

The Hairy Man

Brilliant cover. The only thing that could top this is if they covered The March of the Black Queen! (PLEASE!!!)  :hefdaddy

I'm grateful that they've done that.... It's flawless....  :heart

The cover part of BC/SL was great.

The covers and the instrumentals are phenomenal.

the covers are brilliant. lily of the valley a "hairfinger" are my favorite. i also strongly prefer the instrumental version of the album over the regular one (except best of times).

chrisbDTM

I would also have to say that the Queen cover is my favorite part of the BC&Sl release.  Dislocate your spine if you don't sign he says, I'll have you seeing doubleee

Zydar

The covers are great. The Queen songs are really good but my favourite on that CD is the Zebra cover.

I think the instrumentals would have been better if they included the solos.  Not sure why they didn't.
