Meh. Decent enough song, but hugely overrated for what it is.

DTF rule - no matter how controversial a list, it always comes back to ACOS. Boy I hope #1 is like Never Enough or something.

Ah another song I haven't listened to *braces self again*.

I think it'd actually be kinda cool of you to never listen to it.  It'd make you unique among Dream Theater fans.

On the other hand, go listen to A Change of Seasons.

Lol I actually have the CD too, but I've been pacing myself with DT for a few years now and I'm not stopping now.

Resist the urge to listen to it. Better to save the mystery, than surrender to the secret. :neverusethis:

Once you listen to it you'll realize how foolish you were.

I love this song but not as much as I used to. Still awesome and a top 2 spot is more than understandable.

Scorpion

Top 1 song for me. Great write-up there. Actually, I enjoy all your write-ups.  :tup

Number 1 is YNM, right? :neverusethis:

BlobVanDam

Song #1 should be a masterpiece, a fierce onslaught of a song, a god among lesser songs. Like a god of war. RAW DOG.

Scorpion

No. Just... no. That songs worse than TDEN. Blob, this is something you don't even joke about.

It's a lot worse than TDEN, because TDEN is actually awesome.

The only part about TDEN that is cool is the sweet-ass piano breakdown. The rest is... well, laughable.

1. Burning My Soul
Well, this comes as a surprise. doesn't it? The thing is, I don't get why people actually dislike this song. I really love Falling Into Infinity and this song is the main reason why. it starts with the most awesome bass riff Dream Theater has ever written and the guitar riff that's ripped off from that is equally awesome. When the lyrics start I always get overwhelmed by the immense literacy the guys put into this song, especially with James's screams. BURNING MY SOUL. The robotic voice that echoes the chorus is unique, I've never heard that before and the second verse doesn't disappoint at all, with more of James's screaming. Simply put, simple as a song can be, it can be absolutely awesome, and this is a prime example of that. Derek Sherinian gets even more shine-time, with an awesome keyboard solo that in some way reminds me of Jordan Rudess's work with Dream Theater later on in their career. Perhaps that's why they chose him, because his style is as awesome as the solo on this song, which is awesome as well. The bridge sort of brings it down, but the chorus makes it all up for it. BAAAAHRNING MY SOUL! Seriously, if you haven't been triggered enough to actually appreciate this song, listen to it right now. It's fucking amazing.

1. Metropolis Pt. 1: The Miracle and the Sleeper
Fuck that shit. Burning My Soul is horrible. This is where it is, this is where everything is and this is where music comes together in the most insane form to create the biggest (yes, even with its short length) masterpiece in 'popular' music. This song has absolutely no flaws at all, from start to finish it is a ridiculously solid solid and you can see and hear the immense amounts of time that have been put into it to create it. The buildup is absolutely fantastic and if ever I need an example of how a song should be constructed, this is the one I choose. If someone wants to hear what Dream Theater is about, this is my first choice for a song, this one has it all. Great, awesome riff, fantastic drumming, amazing lyrics backed by wonderful vocals, awesome proggy instrumental parts and a structure one can only dream of. The start is about the best in any music ever, with instruments coming in in phases, never too much at a time, with the keyboard, guitars and drums alternating, before the riff kicks in. But it doesn't stay like that, no. Every single time the riff is played, Petrucci adds something to it, to keep it interesting and fresh (and awesome). Everything comes together in the following riff, which is played by guitar and drums first, before the keyboard kicks in and abother riff follows directly afterwards, leading into the start of the vocals. After four lines, the backing changes and the song moves forwards into a relatively softer part, with never too much going on at a time. Gradually building up, we find an amazing vocal line further on ("As a child..") and we're back to an earlier riff, for the first time, but now with vocals. Some of the best DT vocal lines sound after this, with Petrucci's guitar parts ever changing and expanding. And then we're headed into the best instrumental section DT has ever done. Without elaborating too much on this part, the instrumental section features amazing grooves and awesome solo trade-offs between the keyboards and the guitars, backed by proggy riffs and insane drumming and.. everything fits! And it's not too much, even the bass solo works wonders in this awesome part. There's nothing bad in it at all, just progressive awesomeness to wet your pants to. (granted, I've never actually done this, but it's the Image that's supposed to make my point, not the Words). Headed out of the awesome pant-wetting section, we're back into clean mode, with James evoking some line he never seems to hit clearly when played live. Amazing hard-rockish riffs sound the ending of the lyrics and the general ending ending of the song follows slowly afterwards. but not before Mike Portnoy does some awesome drumfill on his kit first. What the lyrics mean? I don't know and nobody does. I actually found it pretty amazing they could even write a part 2 based on these lyrics. to be honest, I don't care what they're about, they add to the mystique and general overwhelmance (I don't care that that's not even a word) of the song. There's no need to explain why this song tops my list really. It's amazing, it's what Dream Theater is all about and it's the best song on the best album ever. Well, that's it basically.

I hope you enjoyed reading my list, I certainly did enjoy making it and typing all the writeups on the go. With this I'll give the proverbial pen to my buddy Luke aka FlyingBIZKIT, who will entertain you (and me) with his list after mine. Thanks for following and enjoy the music! :)

Aw, man, you mean Burning My Soul isn't actually your favorite?  :(

In all seriousness, Metropolis is an amazing song.  Though it isn't my personal favorite Dream Theater song, I can certainly understand why it tops so many lists; it definitely deserve the praise.

Great list, Elite.  I've enjoyed reading it.  You had some very interesting write-ups and some cool song choices.

senecadawg2

Awesome list, although it would have been more interesting to top it all off with BMS. Still... Metropolis is a great song and a worthy pick.

Very good song, and even though I like a few slightly more, it as an absolutely worthy choice for #1.

Burning My Soul isn't horrible, though. In fact, I agree with many of the things you wrote, especially about Derek's solo. That's fucking killer.
