Andy is both an amazing player and a great composer. It would be great to have him do something with DT, whether it would be a collaboration or just being an opening act.

I am surprised noone has mentioned Michael Hedges.  This is exactly what he played and how he played in the 90's, before he died in an auto accident.  Check out "Aerial Boundaries".  But this guy Andy is pretty amazing in his own right

Funny story,

I saw Hedges live in 1996-97? at rosebuds in Pgh, the funny thing is guess who was playing next door at Metrolpol on FII tour,  DT!  and I didnt know until I was walking out of Hedges show.  I had just moved to the Burgh and didnt know my wayaround and was totally bummed I missed DT.  Enjoyed the Hedges show but WTF.

I'm really liking Andy's playing.  His Wikipedia page mentions he is influenced by Dream Theater.  His playing reminds me of Phil Keaggy's fingerstyle album, "Beyond Nature".  This forum has turned me on to quite a few good musicians; thanks guys.

I met Andy at the NAMM show two years ago. Super nice guy. We had like a 20 minute conversation. I also got an autograph. It was pretty fuckin sweet.
My latest concept album "IV: Timber" IS OUT NOW!

I never thought it was going to be a collaboration, as in an album or something.  I knew they meant it's for a show or few shows, whatever.  I don't think THAT is going to happen.  I hope I'm wrong, though.  Would love to see this.

You know what..... I just read the first post again.  I can't see McKee performing with DT on OUTCRY lol ...

But, more of a "special guest" .... maybe Beneath the Surface or Hollow Years or .... I don't know.  Maybe even Silent Man?

Thats what I was thinking actually. Im sure Andy would be able to work something pretty cool out for Beneath the surface  :tup

I really do hope this happens, Andy is my favourite guitar player. It would be awesome to have him perform with my favourite band  :metal

I prefer Breakfast in the field, but, yeah, Michael Hedges. And if you are into that kind of playing, check Antoine Dufour too.

I love Andy McKee and Michael Hedges.  I'm actually kind of surprised that so many people haven't heard of Andy.  The guy's youtubes have been viral for years.

Yeah, I'm a bit surprised too. His videos come up as suggestions for a lot of guitar-related stuff I think.

Anyway, this would be seriously cool! I would love to hear the musical outcome of such a collaboration.

Wow it surprises me how so few people know Andy McKee here :( I've been a fan of his since 06 (have one of my taylors signed by him too)

It'd be cool to see a gig with him and JP, hard to imagine how it would be especially considering how different his music is from DT.

Pretty much this

I have been vibing off his tunes for years.  When I get stressed out at work, I call up a you tube playlist of Andy's tunes and chill.   Drifting is about my favorite tune of his I think.

The crazy thing about these guys is when you see them in person. A few years back I got to see Antoine perform at a home with like 20-30 people there and it's unbelievable to watch, just dead on all the time same goes for Andy.

antigoon

I think his music is a bit snoozy, but remember this video? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x29pdFce1g0

A live collaboration with arrangements of some of their softer songs like this could be great.

ReaperKK

I agree, plus hasn't DT been doing a sort of acoustic set in the middle of there shows?

And now I play the one that no one ELSE mentioned (I think)... PRESTON REED
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-oVzB0zRBU0

This video sold me on him and an album. I hope to catch him playing somewhere at some point.

Andy himself cites him as the chief inspiration to his style. And it seems Preston is at the forefront of this two hand percussive style; he is a little different from Hedges.

Any way, about the OP... I would LOVE to see Andy play an opening slot with DT. Probably will not happen around my area, but cool to hear none the less!

ReaperKK

Preston Reed never really stood out to me (he is a phenomenal player tho) but he has influenced a ton of players including one of my favorites, Kaki King

Who's betting that if Andy will be playing with DT, it will be during the few shows they are doing in December.

Anyone whole likes Andy Mckee should check out my friend Ian Hughes, his style is derived heavily from him...

I saw him last year with Eric Johnson and he was incredible. Very unique and virtuostic, but once the initial shock wears off you're still left with incredibly beautiful melodies and underlying chord progressions. Got to hang with him after the show too and he was so cool, very down to earth.

I live in the country with no high speed internet available; my connection is slow.  This forum runs relatively fast for me though (thanks Bosk!).  It is hard to find new music with a slow connection.  Previously I served in the Navy on submarines; no connection under the water obviously.  Believe it or not, I actually only recently discovered Dream Theater.  I was working out in a Navy gym, and heard Constant Motion on the speaker system.  I went to the front desk to find out who this band was.  The lady didn't know; she said I would have to wait until her relief arrived whose job it was to program the music.  I waited 30 minutes for the guy; he turned out to be the Captain's son (only a teenager).  He told me about DT.  A couple weeks later I owned every DT CD.
