What was the highest note James has ever hit? (live or studio)

Studio - Technically the screamed "BREAK ME DOWN" is the highest JLB has hit in the studio, which is an A5 iirc, with the next one being the F#5 from the Whoooaaaaa section of Learning To Live. Now that I think about it, there's an F#5 in Rough Boys from the Winter Rose album.

Live - He's hit a A5 several times. There's the screamed YEAH from their cover of The Number of the Beast, and also the end section when he's screaming GATES when covering Cemetery Gates on Gigantour. Many more odd ones that I can't recall.

Jaffa

It's also worth noting that that he technically hits a G5 in Octavarium - "Trapped inside this octavari-UM!"  The last screamed 'UM!' is a G5.  But some people don't count it.  Blob can explain why not better than I can.   :lol

Other than that, there's the obvious LtL F5, and I believe he hits an F5 in part of Innocence Faded, too, although I could be wrong on that.  And the 'eagle screams' in the BMU/BMD chorus are extremely high.  I don't know how high, but I trust Blob when he says A5.

As for live, I have no idea.

LieLowTheWantedMan

I believe he's hit A5 singing "DRAWING LINES IN THE SAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAND" before live.

He slides up to a short C#6 at the end of this video.

And you can hear all his other famous high notes in that video as well.

LTL is an F#5. How dare you rob JLB of a whole semitone! And I think Innocence is an E5, although I can't be bothered checking right now.

And I know we discussed the Octavarium thing via PM, so I'll say it again here. I don't count the Octavarium screams because they're not really designed to be pitched. It's a harsh scream that happens to be clear enough to identify some pitch, but the pitch of these notes does not sound intentionally chosen as specific notes, and they don't really fit in a key/melody. They are not like BMUBMD where JLB is intentionally singing a melody of specific notes.
But because the vocal techniques in these two instances are probably the same for JLB, you could argue it.

No intention of arguing it.  I understand your point, I just thought you'd be better at explaining it than I would.   :tup

My sincerest apologies.  :(

I think James' second highest note may be at the end of Asylum City on the Winter Rose demo.

My favourite LaBrie moment has to be in the Live at the Marquee version of Metropolis, the way he changes the phrase in "I've found its all caught up with me"

Great point right here, this is something I've been thinking about for a long time. And I also think this can be applied to most of JLB's screams.

The hell? How could Winter Rose have anticipated the premise for Batman: Arkham City all the way back then? Unbelievable!

Speaking in total ignorance of pitch and whatnot...

...how does the ending note he hits on Ayreon's "The Human Equation" rank? (On 'Confrontation', right as the 'dream sequence' cuts out)

It's an F#5. Awesome. :|
(I've never listened to the song until just then)

What is the note James has been hitting during Under A Glass Moon in this tour?  He's going above the note he hits in Score.  It's on the word "time".  Anyone know what he's hitting?

What about "BOUNDless energy" from Score?   What note is that?

I love the F# at the end of ACOS 93, which should definitely be in that wonderful collection Implode posted.

Anyway, his most impressive live moment still remains this one. Those amazing Gs...

Funny you should post that - I was going to post it myself and ask what those notes were  :lol  Such incredible power and seems even more difficult considering he's actually singing words, rather than just screaming a random 'waaah' or whatever.
Whoaaaahh, ohhh, ohhhhh. Whoaaaahh, ohhhhh, ohhhhhh. Waaah, ahhh, haaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaowwwwww

Again, I don't think it's really a note. It's just a scream, it's not meant to be pitched. I'm kinda disappointed when people call one of the screams his highest note, because I always expect to hear it sung clearly and intentionally.

Hands down, JLB is my favorite vocalist ever. Despite not singing like he used to, he set the bar so unfuckingimaginably high for every other prog rock singer, it'll be near impossible to raise.

No that note is definitely intentional because he did it every single time the same exact way.  He definitely means to hit that note.

Agreed.

I dunno, it doesn't sound like it to me. I've seen a lot of youtube videos of Under a glass moon from this tour, and it seems to me like he's changing it up every other night - also, on a couple of concerts he actually hit the original note. Is there anyone willing to check that? I'm way too lazy.  ;D

OMG, I'm glad i'm not the only one.  I've listened to that so many times that when I listen to the original, or any other version where he doesn't sing that line high, my mind inserts it anyway, or if I'm singing along I'll try to sing the LATM version.  LATM is maybe my favorite thing DT has ever done.

Idk what note he hits on it this tour, but when I saw DT last week, he fucking belt out a note for "Time!" that didn't even seem humanly possible.

Agreed.

It sounded like an E above tenor C when I was at the concert in Toronto, he was definitely hitting it intentionally. he screams it out probably because it is a bit of an awkward note. It is just above the second passagio and is probably one of the first notes in his voice that is devoid of chest resonance. It's hard going from chest to mix/head without noticeable difference. It's harder when you leave chest completely and still keep the same power and resonance. So to keep from breaking power and sounding weak he is powering the note out.

Which is what he does on the album. His voice is just younger and he is able to compress the note better. If you listen to it, it still sounds gritty and you can hear the moment his larynx drops and he fires the note out.

:tup Live at the marquee is so underrated, it is easily LaBrie's best performance

There are at least 5/10 better performances from the same tour. Maybe more, but I'm not sure. This if we ignore that vocals in LATM were re-recorded in the studio a few months later due to JLB being sick.
