The Letter M

So I'm listening to "The Ministry Of Lost Souls" in my car on the ride home earlier tonight and was thinking - I really hope that, when they (DT) release another live album, they make sure to release a ton of new songs that haven't been released on live CDs yet, as well as giving us a good complete set of songs they've played live with MM so far"...so it got me thinking, how would I create a track list given the best performances of songs from the summer and fall tours so far, knowing which songs have been played, and this is what I came up with...

A Dramatic Tour Of Events
Disc 1:
1. Bridges In The Sky
2. These Walls
3. 6:00
4. Build Me Up, Break Me Down
5. Mike Mangini Drum Solo ("The Genie Unleashed"? :lol)
6. Ytse Jam
7. The Silent Man
8. Beneath The Surface
9. The Great Debate
10. Wait For Sleep
11. Learning To Live

Disc 2:
1. On The Backs Of Angels
2. Caught In A Web
3. Peruvian Skies
4. Through My Words
5. Fatal Tragedy
6. Outcry
7. Far From Heaven
8. Breaking All Illusions
9. The Count Of Tuscany

Both discs would run about 75-78 minutes each, and include 19 of the songs played so far this tour - it excludes many songs as they were on the last few live releases:
"Surrounded", "Forsaken" and TDEN were released on Chaos In Motion
TROAE, TSCO, Metropolis and UAGM were recently released on SCORE
As I Am, WIMH/TTTSTA, PMU and ES on Live At Budokan

New to an official live release would be: all the ADTOE songs (7 of them), "These Walls", "6:00", "The Great Debate", "Wait For Sleep", and "The Count Of Tuscany".
"Caught In A Web", "Peruvian Skies", and "Ytse Jam" would be released again since their appearance on OILAT (which has had many songs re-released on the past few live albums) - the former two (CIAW and PS) are two of FOUR (the other 2 are TAMP and Lie) songs not yet re-released from OILAT, while every other track/song has been re-released on successive live albums (it's like they were trying to replace them slowly...)
"The Silent Man" would return but in it's original/acoustic form, as well as "Learning To Live", and "Through My Words/Fatal Tragedy" since their appearance on LSFNY.

There are no repeat songs from CIM, SCORE or LAB, which is pretty good, and I think the band chose a good pool of songs to reflect that if they choose to release anything from this tour.

So that's my logic behind that. I liked keeping the flow of the first 9 songs on Disc 1 from the A-Setlist, (from BITS to TGD, excluding ES though), and then closing with the epic WFS/LTL combo, even though both tracks weren't played together on the tour, it seems right to stick them together (since they've never been presented as such - and this tour's version of LTL has a 'new' ending).
As for disc 2, I opened with OTBOA since it seems fitting, then went to CIAW (being a 'track 2', it fit well), then oddly enough it moved chronologically (SCORE-esque) through PS and TMW/FT. Then I re-created the ADTOE tracklist by placing "Outcry" behind the FFH/BAI combo, and even though THOSE songs weren't played together on tour, it also seems right to stick them together. Then it closes with the epic TCOT, which never saw a live release.

And speaking of songs from albums that haven't seen a live release, going backwards, this would leave the following unreleased:
BC&SL: All of it, except TCOT as noted above
SC: "Repentance" and "Prophets Of War"
8VM: "Never Enough" (although the entire album was released on DTIFC DVD Romavarium)
TOT: "Honor Thy Father"
SDOIT: "Misunderstood"
SFAM: None (Entire album released on LSFNY)
FII: "You Not Me", "Burning My Soul", "Hell's Kitchen", "Anna Lee"
Awake: "6:00", "Lifting Shadows Off A Dream", "Space-Dye Vest"
IAW: None (although the entire album released on DTIFC 15th Anniversary Bonn, Germany recording)
WDADU: "Status Seeker", "Light Fuse And Get Away", and "The Ones Who Help To Set The Sun" (Unless you count the entire album released on WDADR)

Counting only the albums from Awake-SC, only 12 songs (out of 64) haven't been released live, which is pretty amazing for ANY band who has this much material! And many of those songs don't get played often (or in the case of a few, have NEVER been played live), so it's understandable why they aren't released (yet).

I would totally lay down a ton of money for a 2CD set like this, so I hope if any of the members of DT are reading this, keep this in mind!!! I have money for you if you release this as an album next year!!

EDIT - To reflect some new songs from the current European Leg of the tour.

I could never get into coming up with my own track lists for stuff like this; you guys are good though. Like, so good you should be paid.

I would be thrilled with that as a release. And the unreleased live material is really neat. I'm not sure if it would be a goal to release it all live at some point, but it is very cool that it seems easily within reason to do it.

I believe MP was the one who said that they would try and release many of their played-live songs on official live releases at SOME point in their career, and they seem to keep up pretty well, and despite not having a live album following SDOIT, they've caught up on it with SCORE, LAB, and CIM. If the current tour got an album, they'd catch up even more with "The Great Debate", leaving only "Misunderstood" to see official live release from SDOIT.

Oddly enough, I would still kill to see the 2010 Summer Sonic show released at some point (either as a CD, a DVD, or BOTH):
1. A Nightmare To Remember
2. A Rite Of Passage
3. Prophets of War
4. Wither
5. The Count of Tuscany
6. Pull Me Under / Metropolis Pt. 1

It would knock out releasing all the BC&SL songs they played live, as well as going back to get POW from SC out of the way, and releasing the PMU/Metropolis encore medley for the first time. This was also MP's final gig with the band, so it would be a nice release to close out a chapter in the band's career (also for the awesome set list).

That's almost like the setlist I got for the BC&SL tour;

1. A Nightmare to Remember
2. A Rite of Passage
3. Hollow Years (extended)
4. Keyboard Solo
5. Prophets of War
6. Wither
7. The Dance of Eternity
8. Take The Time

9. The Count of Tuscany

Nice set list! The thing about the Summer Sonic show is that the whole set would fit comfortably on one CD, and it's obvious from the linked YouTube videos that it was professionally shot with multiple cameras, so a release wouldn't be unimaginable... it would just have to be done.

I am curious to see what the next European leg will look like. I suspect they'll keep these songs from their current leg (that they haven't played overseas yet):

Bridges In The Sky
Build Me Up, Break Me Down
The Silent Man
Wait For Sleep
Beneath The Surface
Far From Heaven
Outcry
Breaking All Illusions
Pull Me Under

But what will they play in addition to these songs? I think the good money's on Lost Not Forgotten and This Is The Life showing up (and On The Backs Of Angels being set aside). I can see As I Am, Panic Attack, and Wither all making reappearances. I'd love to see Blind Faith, Lines In The Sand and Scarred all reemerging for the first time since 2007-2008, though I doubt that will happen.

I dunno. There's a lot that could happen.

True, and I have thought that OTBOA might take a rest in Europe considering they played it all summer over there, and replace it with LNF and/or TITL.

As for additional songs, I'd really like to see the '96 version of "Take Away My Pain", or perhaps "Anna Lee", play some tunes that haven't been in the setlists since before the Train of Thought Tour. Maybe some "Overture 1928/Strange Deja Vu", or "Lifting Shadows Off A Dream". It'd be nice to hear some of the older songs that haven't been played in over a decade, especially if they don't rely on too many backing vocals (that either JP and/or MP did).

very very good question. It shall be interesting to see, I'd love the addition of Blind Faith, one of my favourite DT songs, but I think it's just too technical to play every night.

Updated my OP to reflect some changes from the current tour leg in Europe!

Hm, looks like I was right about the songs they retained, but (mostly) incorrect about the new songs they debuted. Which I'm fine with, I like the more recent set lists better than what I guessed (though Blind Faith, Lines In The Sand and Scarred would still be awesome).

All I can say about their upcoming (?) live release is that A. I hope it's material taken from one single show a la Score and B. that the audio/visual quality is light years ahead of Chaos In Motion. Again, Score is a good benchmark here.

Also C., it'd be cool if the DVD was mostly comprised of material that hasn't already been featured on previous releases, but given there's a bunch of them now, that's not a huge priority. Really, I'd take a good, well delivered set of songs that may have already been featured on earlier releases (i.e., anything from Scenes, almost anything from I&W, etc), as long as they're presented well.

?

I would be extremely satisfied if the DVD/CD setlist was the one in the OP!

I think that the list is killer, but I would probably change Ytse Jam for A Fortune in Lies.

As would I, knowing now that it's being played. I just forgot to change it up in the top.

I also came up with the following 3 Disc, packed-to-the-brim, set that features 32 of the 33 songs played so far this tour:

1. The Dream Is Collapsing / Bridges In The Sky
2. These Walls
3. Build Me Up, Break Me Down
4. Mike Mangini Drum Solo
5. Ytse Jam
6. The Silent Man
7. Beneath The Surface
8. The Great Debate
9. Wait For Sleep
10. Learning To Live
(Approximately 76:00)

1. On The Backs Of Angels
2. Under A Glass Moon
3. 6:00
4. Endless Sacrifice
5. Outcry
6. The Spirit Carries On
7. Far From Heaven
8. Breaking All Illusions
9. Pull Me Under
(Approximately 76:00)

1. A Fortune In Lies
2. Surrounded
3. Caught In A Web
4. Peruvian Skies
5. Through My Words/Fatal Tragedy
6. War Inside My Head/Test That Stumped Them All
7. As I Am
8. The Root Of All Evil
9. The Dark Eternal Night
10. The Count Of Tuscany
(Approximately 80:00, would need some trimming to fit onto one CD)

Only song not featured here is "Forsaken". The third disc follows a chronological order, which I think works pretty well, it's got some pretty heavy stuff on it and it's got a lot of songs that haven't been released in a long time (AFIL, CIAW, PS, TMW/FT).

Nice idea, but Peruvian Skies was already released on Livetime, it had a killer Enter Sandman break towards the end.

OIALT also had "Caught In A Web" - (Re-)read the OP for my explanation on why I included which tracks in the 2-disc set list in the OP.
