Ok, this has been buging me for awhile. Everytime i look at JP i cant take him seriously because of that rediculous hair!  John, buddy, youre in your 40s and married with kids!  Time to look the part!  I really think he would look sooo much better with short hair. Hes done it in the past and looked great. I have no idea why i would care about what another guy looks like, but for some reason i do. myung is OK, at least he uses a flat iron, MM's is OK, James is losing his, and JordAn has none.  But there is no excuse for John's hair, simple as that!

SnakeEyes

Are you a male?  I'm just wondering....

Speaking of things that bug us, it's spelled ridiculous, not rediculous. I see that misspelling all the time.

Dude he's a rock star. They have long hair. MOST of them do. Rock stars much older than him have long hair. It's not like 40's = 80's. Give me a break!

TheGreatPretender

Should Dave Mustaine cut his hair too?

Neither do I...

Hope this is locked soon, my goodness how pointless  :lol

KevShmev

I don't care what he looks like, but as a hetero male, I can safely say that his look back in 2002 (I think it was) when he had the short spikey hair was his best look.  But I think long hair looks fairly ridiculous on most men once you get to a certain age.

And there is nothing worse than when rock stars start to get older (like, over 40) and keep their hair really long in back while it is receding big time in the front.  Quite a few rock stars still sport that look, and it is never a good one.

Except Devin Townshend. That man is the king of Skullets.

Fuzzboy

yeah I don't really get the point of such long hair. My hair was longer than his a while ago and cutting it is like the best thing i've ever done.

Yeah I suppose, so i guess "i don't get the point considering how much more comfortable short hair feels" makes more sense. I personally think the cons outweigh the pros when it comes to having long hair

Yeah, but when you're a rock star, regardless of how great the music is, image is still a very important aspect of it. And frankly... I dunno, people say, "He's in his mid 40's, he's too old to pull off long hair" but honestly, I don't see him pulling off the short, spiky hair he had back in 2005. If anything, that's even less suitable to a guy in his 40's.

black_biff_stadler

The whole "dudes that are [insert any demographizing term(s)] shouldn't have long hair" mentality is so apallingly indicative of the stereotypical 50s mindset. I honestly wonder how during colonial times it was completely acceptable for dudes to sport powdered wigs to the point that it was basically a necessity of formal dress at times yet a quarter of a millenium later our society is so predicated on perpetuating pretense and personal issues with the completely harmless stylistic preferences of others.

The double standard that in most professional environments women can have nearly buzzcut hair or tresses down to their ass yet men are generally written off as unprofessional/unhirable if theirs even touches their collar is nauseatingly unnecessary.

Posts like the OP really just remind me of how many people worry too much about the affairs of others in matters that are of no legitimate importance whatsoever. Not trying to blast you either smegolas but as a dude with long hair who's wasted numerous outings on interviews for jobs where they had the gall to waste my time for an entire interview before letting me know my refusal to cut my hair was an automatic dealbreaker (shoulder-length only btw and very neatly pulled into a ponytail even more tidy than most women's) I felt compelled to rant a little. I take no issue with you whatsoever though and I hope this post wasn't as hostile as I fear it came across as.

Gadough

How prudish.

There's nothing wrong with his long hair. He's a rock star and it suits him. Get over it.

Cranky

Yeah, I pretty much agree with the guy that has the football helmet avatar...
Though, I am too lazy to quote him or look to see what his name is.

Dave Mustaine isn't going thin at the front (or if he is he's hiding it WAY better than JP)

LaBrie's is going thin even more than JP's. I still think it's not bad enough to cut. At least at the moment. So that goes even more for Petrucci. They can still pull it off, and if anything, they're better off keeping it for as long as they possibly can. It'll be a sad day for DT when they're forced to cut their hair short for good.

And, might I add...

You kind of answered your own question, unbeknownst to you.
John Petrucci is a 40 year old mature man, he is married, has kids, and is in one of the most successful (Prog) bands on the planet, and is one of the most gifted guitarist ever born.. I think he has a right to have whatever hair style he wants, without question.

Personally, I think he looks better than EVER with his long hair and beefy body, he certainly looks healthy.

I have long hair too, and I get hassled a lot by older folks for it quite a few, especially when I was younger by my own family members...
They were always saying that I need a haircut, I'll never get anywhere in life with that long hair, never get a job, I look like a girl, I look gay, and that I will cut it once I 'grow up' and realize it's just a phase.

Well, that was 5 years ago, and I still have long hair, even longer in fact..

Black_Floyd is literally right though, I don't think I could agree more... Mostly because the issue kinda hits home for me, and with great deals of frustration.

E.S.

I always thought the pinnacle of fanboyism is discussions about a musicians hair. I know that would freak me out. :lol

Thanks man. The people in the professional world (whatever that specifically entails any way) that get bothered by dudes rocking long hair almost seem to convey an underlying prejudice characterized by a mentality of "it's one of the last ways we can legally exclude people that don't look like us." The women's lib movement helped start a push for women to get more jobs they were unfairly kept out of and affirmative action (I have no conclusive stance on it btw) helped minorities get jobs they weren't previously being hired for. The fact that hair length is a choice and anyone can remove their hair seems to give them a trump card to be able to make gender-non-equal policies regarding it.

TheGreatPretender

My hair was short... I got a job and then grew my hair out after that, and no one said a thing. Does that make me an evil genius?

No. It makes your employers only part-time assholes.

BlobVanDam

I'd say Petrucci looks his best right now. I'm glad he grew his hair back out.

Ħ

My favorite hairstyle of his was the one he had in LaB.

NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  Petrucci should NEVER have short hair again as long as he lives.  He wrote and recorded three albums with short hair, Six Degrees, Train of Thought, and Octavarium, the three albums I like the least in terms of his guitar playing.  Then he grew it back out and recorded SC (hugely underrated as a guitar album), BCSL (consistently awesome rhythm playing), and ADTOE (one of his best DT albums in terms of musical composition).  JP's hair is clearly the source from which he derives his ability to play guitar.  Your arbitrary standards of conformity and maturity are a danger to one of the greatest musicians to walk this earth.  Silence yourself and spare us your foolishness.

changing_seasons

I liked the medium length he had on SCORE, with everything gelled back. Made him look like someone from the Italian mafia.

Petrucci's performance on Score is really underrated.  I love the tonality and the feel.

JP's hair is fine, but JLB's current beard is the greatest tuft of hair in DT history.

Gah, every time you post I rage a little bit.

But then I'm ok.

This also.  I'm in the same camp as you.  I remember being turned down for jobs before simply because of the length of my long, yet clean and well kept hair.  Not to say that there aren't a ton of double standards for females, which I don't agree with either, but when it comes to hair, men with long hair get treated like shit.

johncal

I'm amazed at the never ending personal critisism of the guys in this band. Disappointing.

Who gives a shit what his hair looks like? Go outside and plant a fucking tree...

I amazed that that one guy thinks Train of Thought doesn't have god tier guitar work.
