Lamplight Symphony and Hymn to the Atman must be mentioned!

They be the main reasons I listen to Song For America, and I find all the songs on that album to be at amazing at the very least!

Somebody should start a Kansas thread in General Music Discussion. I'm too lazy. :coolio

Saw Rush last fall in Atlanta, they played Magnum Opus in the warm up mix before the show.  A huge cheer went up from the crowd.  Was a nice moment.

That is the best song Kansas ever wrote.
Closet Chronicles would like a word with you.

Apercu kills it.

Actually, the entirety of Point of Know Return is the blandest of Kansas' essential six albums to me.  It's not necessarily bad, it's just that nothing on it stands out.

EDIT: Child of Innocence stands as my favorite song of theirs, even if it's not "prog."  I have to hit repeat every time I hear it.

There's this really cool place I came across where we can talk about Kansas all we want without having to dig for connections between it and DT:

I guess I never noticed that until now.

Also... Song for America!

You can tell Kansas was an influence on them.  DT even played cover versions of Carry On Wayward Son (as part of the Big Medley from ACOS) and Paradox (found on a bootleg and also the Ytsejam Records Uncovered release) live.

Great song.  I'm a big fan of Kansas.  Funny enough this song was originally titled "Leftoverture" and the album was titled "Magnum Opus" from what I understand.  Somewhere before release the two got switched.

#44
:tup  Interestingly enough, Kansas and Dream Theater are tied at #2 for my all-time favorite band.

EDIT:  I can easily see how JP might've latched onto the spiritual aspects of Kansas' music.

IIRC, there is a section from Octavarium that closely resembles/pays tribute to a section of a Kansas song.  Anyone know what Kansas song it is?

You might be thinking of the Overture from "Six Degrees".  The main Casio theme sounds very reminiscent of the coda section of "The Wall" by Kansas.

I'm listening now and I can hear the resemblance.

4:33 to 4:40 of The Wall remind me of the general grand theme of 22:17 23:30 in Octavarium (as well as the other earlier versions of it in the song).  Maybe it's just a coincidence.  The lyrics "Can you stop what's happening?" are what I hear in my head when I listen to that section of Kansas tune.

Yeah, there's definitely a tonal similarity there, but it seems funny to me that you would pick out that sequence of a few notes to compare to a Dream Theater song rather than the super obvious "Casio theme" from 6DOIT (which literally start off with the same sequence of 6 notes if they are in the same key, which I don't care enough to confirm right now).

I'm more familiar with 8VM.  What song features the 'Casio theme' from 6DoIT?

Nevermind:
