I've seen many people praise A Dramatic Turn of Events as one of the best albums DT have done in years, or possibly ever. Many have said it's their best album since 6 Degrees or Scenes, maybe even I&W! By making this poll, it'll be interesting to see what everyone thinks. One thing is for sure: option 1 probably won't get any votes (unless someone's trolling)! :lol

After listening to the album many times I've come to the conclusion that this is their best album since Awake, which is a great thing, as Awake is my favorite album. Sure Scenes and Degrees are also great, but I think the former has some songs that don't work very well as individual songs and the latter could've been trimmed down at some points. ADTOE doesn't have any single moment where I feel "this drags on" or "this section doesn't fit" and in that way it's like I&W and Awake.

I'd say it's their best overall since SDOIT or ToT, but I went with SDOIT. But by no stretch can it beat SDOIT, or SFAM imo. ADTOE is an 8.5/10 album for me, whereas they're both 10/10.

Xanthul

I voted Train of Thought, though ADTOE has potential to surpass it if it keeps growing on me. It's definitely behind SDOIT though and it will stay that way.

Zydar

It's easily their best album since Six Degrees, for me.

In my spare time I make music! Check it out. :)

As good as ADTOE is, I'm not sure if I think it's better than Octavarium, which is one of my favorite albums of all time. For me the best DT albums (not including ADTOE) are:

8VM
I&W
SFAM

Time will tell where ADTOE places itself, but I think it has the potential to beat SFAM for me.

Dunno.  Its in that weird middle ground of DT albums for me where I can't rank them.  Awake, ADTOE, BC&SL, Octavarium, and Falling Into Infinity all fall into that category.

Tough call between Scenes and 6DOIT.  I love Six Degrees to death, and it does have significantly more material on it...but that said, there are definitely some tracks I would skip during a listen, which never happens with ADTOE so far.  I'm going to be radical and vote Scenes.

You need to add an option for "best ever". I can't answer the poll the way it is.

deslock

How should I vote if I think it's their best?

Juular

SFAM for me. 6DOIT had some great stuff on it but also quite a bit that I didn't like.

Ok, I added an option for you two, plus others who like ADTOE the best.

I'll go with 6DOIT.  I doubt it will break my top 4 (and 6DOIT sits comfortably at number 4), but I could see it over time overtaking FII for that 5th spot.  :tup :tup

THANKS! Added my vote.

I'm really a fan of all the other "best" albums, I&W, SMAM, 6DOIT, TOT, but like ADTOE the best because..........

I&W - Some great classics but some songs I just don't like.

SFAM - Very good album but seems to drag towards the end. Everytime you think it's over, there's more. Could have been a little shorter

6DOIT - Too much filler, esp. on first disk, can't beat the first 2 though.  Although I love the second disk, the overature is painfully long.

TOT - Great hard hitting disk, love every song but not a lot of variety to the songs. Does sound more traditional DT towards the end though.

ADTOE - Consistent, no BAD songs, great variety in song sounds, structures used to full advantage, very melodic, purposful wanking (Which is good), great maturity of the sound, much better drumming.... fits the music,(no look at me), Singing all in range and not forced. Yes, I could make a whole list of things that are not great but my list would be longer for all the other albums mentioned.

Now, here's my main thing though. It's ALL great music the guys put out for our enjoyment. If there's something you don't like skip it if you must. There's no other group that I can think of IMO that's put out that many albums with that many good songs. The parts that aren't great (RRRROOOOOAAAAARRRR!!!!!), I just ignore. I always take the bad with the good. No one on this earth will do everything the way you want them to, I dont' care if it's your spouse, you kids, your boss, etc. Why should we expect DT to be any different? They may be music "gods" but they're just human beings, and I love em' for everything they do. They're GGGGRRRRREEEEAAAATTTT!!!

In my opinion, it's their best since Scenes. Although Six degrees is almost just as incredible as ADTOE...

JoeH

It's funny, I've gone through phases of likability towards this album since I've been listening to it. It was the best since 6DOIT at first, then the best since SFAM, and now? It is now my all time favorite DT album based off of its consistency and vast layers of inspiration. They, for lack of a better way to say it, completely and entirely outdid themselves in every way.

IdoSC

To me it's either their best since SFAM or their best period. So...

It's not better than SDoIT but better than the albums that came afterwards (I don't know if it's better than Octavarium: 8VM has DAT TITLE TRACK but ADToE has better flow and balance over the rest of the songs). Best one since Six Degrees.

So there. Can't keep up with DT's Magic Quartet, but I think it might reach the top 5. Might.

Jaffa

I voted Train of Thought.

Just for the record, Train of Thought is my second favorite Dream Theater CD.

Where is the "none" option? I prefer BC&SL

Then vote for BCASL, since it would be your favourite album since BCASL.

Six Degrees. I really like Octavarium, but ADToE is a better overall album.

I am with you, I think it is there best since SfaM. Not sure why Six Degrees gets as much praise as it does.

LieLowTheWantedMan

SFaM. It narrowly beats SDoIT though, which was my 3rd DT album prior to this.

This, at least for now. As it ages, it could edge out 6DOIT, and be their best since Scenes. IMO, of course.
