Hi all,

I am assuming that Dream Theater attract musicans as fans due to the technical nature of their writing and their obvious level of musicanship.  This may be a no-brainer..but is it?

I welcome your results and any comments.

Cheers.

\o\ lol /o/

LieLowTheWantedMan

I don't jam in bands, but I still pick the third option.

Phoenix87x

Dream Theater was the catalyst for me becoming a Musician and John Petrucci has been an inspiration to my Guitar playing for over 15 years.

Liberation

None of the poll options work for me... I'd like to start playing but haven't really had a chance yet. It was actually DT (and several others bands later, but DT got me into the whole genre anyway) that got me interested in instruments themselves, not the other way around. (I hadn't even known what does a bass guitar sound like before, I thought it's the one in heavy riffs. :lol)

Riceball

Non-musician checking in; just love listening to technical, progressive music.

Reasons for this: picked sport over music at pretty much every juncture (primary school, high school, uni, post-study), don't have time now.

energythief

I do not play an instrument, but I love me some DT.

johncal

While mangini can play 3 different time signatures at a time, I've got one at a time mastered! woo hoo. But just listening to these guys makes me better. It gives me ideas I could never have thought of. And even though my drumming totally sucks next to theirs, it still makes me a lot better for other simpler things when I practice along with DT. Faster, more accurate amd more creative. But I would guess DT has the same impact on all of your playing your different instruments as well.

fibreoptix

Self taught singer. In a recording and live performing band but it's not a primary source of income.

Metrovarium

I've just started to learn how to play the bass guitar. Literally, I had my first lesson on Monday night.

millahh

The second option was closest for me, though it may not apply so much anymore.  I played upright bass in jazz combos all through college, and had lots of paying gigs.  That's a ways in the past though, and now I'm more of a bass guitar hobbyist.

I'm a musician, but I'm into more electronic than anything.

Mosh

I'm an excellent musician. Haven't made a career yet, I have to finish high school first.  :millahhhh

FlyingBIZKIT

I've played drums for about 2 years. I try to play every single day!

Slain

While I think there are a lot of DT fans that are musicians, it's a misconception that ALL DT fans are musicians. DT always manages to get up there on the charts when a new album is released, and that says a lot about them.

I'm a musician though  ;D and I've been getting guitar lessons for a few years.

SystematicThought

I have a nice drum kit and I dabble around on that

kiwiclapton

I play guitar and muck about with a few mates - its great fun! I don't drink anymore.

Cranky

I've played guitar for 8 years, piano for 10, and I compose a lot of music.
I'd say Dream Theater and Death are my main influences.

I am self-taught, just learned by playing other pieces of music  and looking up tips and tricks and things like that online, (I guess that isn't entirely self taught, but I just mean that I never took classes, went to school for it, etc.)
But, I am experienced... So, it's kind of in the middle for me. It's also hard not to sound like I'm bragging, but I suppose all this pertains to the OP.

I chose the 4th option, apart from the school thing, because it is the most accurate.

Interesting thread, I have to agree, I feel as though most of the fans are musicians. But, we shall see the results.  :tup

CrimsonSunrise

My option would be different in the poll.  As a kid in Jr High and High school I played 9 instruments, last one being Drums.  Since then I've rarely played.  I WISH...I would have been able to have a drum set growing up, and formal lessons.

Priest of Syrinx

I doubt *most* DT fans are musicians, but I wouldn't be surprised if at least half of the fans on this forum are to some degree.

As for me... option #4.  I can play a little guitar and piano, but that's it.

This. The rest of the description was definitely the closest. While I have messed around and jammed with other people occasionally, I don't play in bands, but I definitely do some recording, am self taught, and am a decent player.

lumpy33

i'm the first one to pick the first option i guess.  i have a masters in jazz piano from nyu and i teach jazz classes and lessons and direct ensembles at a univerity in upstate ny.  i play in about 5 bands professionally around town, and although at least 14 thousand out the 16 thousand songs on my ipod are jazz, i have every dream theater and rush track known to man, as well as a good helping of the aquarium rescue unit, metallica, iron maiden, and pantera.  i guarantee there's not too many professional jazzers out there who can say that!
images and words will always remain on my top 5 list of desert island cd's.

Wow, that is quite the accomplishment!!

hopefully one day, I can say the same thing about myself.

senecadawg2

I'm not sure there was an option for me. Yes I am self-taught. Yes I dabble. No I don't jam in bands. No music is most certainly NOT 'not for me'.

T-ski

I played the sax through high school but wasn't very good.  In the past couple of years I've dabbled with a drum kit but don't have the time to really learn.

I consider myself a frustrated musician in that I understand the concepts of what I want to play but it gets lost in the connection between my brain and my hand/fingers.

Sketchy

I jam, write and record with a friend of mine. I learned keyboards at school, which I can play well enough to write on, but not really to record with, certainly not in any spectacular fashion. I'm self-taught on bass, which I consider myself to be relatively good on, and recently aquired a guzheng, which I am teaching myself to play, too.

Mladen

I have years of schooling, but I'm still far from being excellent in terms of playing technique, but I'm quite confident when it comes to knowledge, theory and stuff like that. And yeah, I love Dream Theater, duh.  ;D

kirksnosehair

I don't make a living from it (only secondary income) but I am in a signed band with an album coming out in October and another one being written

RG93

I took organ lessons once, but gave up somewhere in the 1st grade due to lack of coordination, so not a musician

TheCor

I picked the first one, because my main source of income is music, but I'm certainly not getting rich or anything.  I'm self taught and have been playing guitar for about 12 years now; I gig regularly with some cover bands and do have an original project in the works currently.  I also make some cash by giving lessons and doing guitar setups, repairs, etc.  My hope is that either the original project takes off someday or I get hired to play for some kind of big time gig.  So at this point I'm gonna say I'm a professional musician, just not a particularly successful one.

You make a living doing what you love (I assume), so that's already a success I think.
