READ THIS BEFORE VOTING

In the MP discussion thread I did a percentage ranking of how vital I find each  DT member's contribution to the DT sound. I think it would be interesting to see the board's view on this.

Sooo, this forum only allows multiple-choice polls (no ranking per se), so I want to try this:

Before you cast your vote, you look at the current poll distribution (click on "View results" to see). You then cast your vote for the DT member that you find the most underrepresented. Not the one you find most important. The one you find most underrepresented, i.e. the member you think is the farthest below the percentage he deserves.
Unless I am mistaken, given enough votes the poll should settle on the average user's ranking.

Pretty-please, play along. Because if it works it could be a way for us to do rankings with regular polls, which would be wicked cool.

To walk you through an example, I voted first and voted JP. Why? Because my personal ranking say he has the biggest influence on DT's sound (I put him at about 45% I think). But, he had 0% in the poll. So, he was the most underrepresented, being off by 45%-0% = 45%.
EDIT: It might make sense to write down your personal percentages first. Then compare against the current standing. Vote for the one with the biggest negative difference.

So we're basically voting to get the poll to what we feel the results should be (in our own opinion)? Am I interpreting that correctly?

Just want to make sure I get it, because it sounds like an interesting idea.

rumborak

Yeah, you try to vote the member up who you think is most under the percentage he should have. I edited the OP explaining why I voted JP on my vote.

rumborak

BlobVanDam

Ok. Voted for JR. I think he has the second biggest influence musically, so thought I'd get the ball rolling there.

rumborak

Cool, yeah, that vote makes sense. JP had 100% (too high), JR had 0%, so you wanted to vote for JR. Excellent!

Hopefully this gets a big enough sample size to get a clear result. Really neat idea.

Am I the only one who can't View Results without voting in this poll?

Really? Anybody else have this problem? I set the poll to "view results to everyone".

rumborak

BlobVanDam

There should be a "view results" just under the poll so you can see it. It worked fine for me.

:facepalm:I missed the button on the new skin  :lol Never mind, it's set correctly.

Voted JP to get him more in his range of overall importance to the band (closer to 45-50%)

It would make all those Survivor threads soooo much easier :lol
We just need to give this style of polling a label, you put it into the thread title then, and you got a ranking poll.

All the other members are closer than that to their intended percentage? (just making sure :) )

Well, at the time of my vote I felt the rankings were pretty spot on. A rough sketch of my projected percentages would probably be:

JP: 45%
JR: 25%
JLB: 20%
JM: 10%
MM: 0% (for now of course, he is not an integral part of their sound by any stretch of the imagination)

wasteland

That's a really cool idea, rumborak! This way of conducting polls should really carry on in the future!

I voted JLB. To me he has been and still is very important in shaping and keeping the "DT sound", even though his actual musical imput has always been quite slim.

My percentages were:

JP   35%
JR   25%
JLB 25%
JM  10% (absolutely love the guy, but he has never been extremely prominent in the sound - though his contribution were always masterful)
MM 05% (at the moment)

I saw James percentage was only 11.1% and went with him.  :tup

BlobVanDam

Ok, MM has as many votes as JLB and JR. Some people aren't quite getting it..........

rumborak

The vote numbers are still quite low. This could just be regular fluctuation. Because from the responses here people seem to have gotten it.

This is a good idea.  Hopefully most people will understand what to do, I think rumbo made it pretty clear in his OP.

Voting now.

Yes, he did.  However, if experience teaches anything, multiple people will screw it up anyway.

Interesting idea here. Voted JR, since he was a bit behind.

If this idea works perhaps it can be done on an album by album basis - "Music importance rating of the members on Images and Words" i.e. who was most influential in creating the distinct sounds of each album?

The King in Crimson

Voted JLB. He's at least as important to the DT sound as JR is. I might argue that he's more important (for me at least) but I can live with him being equal to JR.

Global Laziness

JP: 35%
JR: 25% (upvoted JR)
JM: 15%
JLB: 15%
MM: 10%

Amen.

When I voted I picked JP.

Ok mangs, I just want to make sure I get this right. I think the Petrucci, Rudess, & LaBrie are the top contributors to the Sound. Myung is The Mang, but I don't think their song-writing or Sound would be impacted that much if he left, Crom Forbid. My own percentages would be this:

Petrucci: 40%
Ruddess: 35%
LaBrie: 25%

So I should vote for LaBrie, yes?

Edit: Actually, LaBrie is at 16% and Rudess is at 21% so that means I should vote for Rudess, yes?
DISPLAY thy breasts, my Julia!

erik16

Voted JR to get his percentage closer to 25. JP should have 35% and the rest I'm not sure.

although I think it's JP, my huge love for JLB didn't let me vote for him....
