This is a tough one for me, but I liked him on Outcry.  Honestly even though he said he didn't I think he held back a little on hte album in general, but maybe thats just because I am used to Portnoy making it "Drum Theater"...

But I say Outcry

Actually Mangini did play on Beneath the Surface using ePads.... :tup

He could have used maxiPads, but then you'd REALLY hear him.....................................................complain

WindMaster

He totally killed BAI. I can play some of the other songs on the drums, but not that one. The time sigs are insane. Although the times are almost the same as LTL, I noticed. But then again, I can't play that either.

CrimsonSunrise

So far from what I've dissected.... Outcry

Well, according to Mangini, Outcry was the toughest, crazyest playing he did on the album, who am I to argue with that?

I voted Outcry. That's some crazy stuff going on in the middle. Trying to get the gist of it, but it's a tough one for sure. Would absolutely love to see how he does it live or at least a video.

I don't care for him on the album at all, actually.  But, let me clarify that before people lynch me:  I think his drum sound is awful (not his fault).... bad mic'ing, bad mixing/ EQ'ing/ whatever, bad sound overall.  None of that is his fault.  I also feel like the drum parts were written by JP and originally created using drum software and..... well.... they were.  The problem is that Mangini seems to just play the parts like the software did.  I don't think he puts enough energy into it.  Sounds like he's nervous and doesn't want to play the wrong thing or be obnoxious or something.... I hope he looses up because he's incredible.  He's my least favorite part of the album, sorry to say.

I went with LNF. I know Outcry has the most complex instrumental part, but I'm probably biased by the fact I listen to LNF. It's hard to judge him properly without listening for him though, because half the time I can't hear what he's doing.

On the issue of the drum sound, I think the band has made a decision to create a much more organic and inclusive mix. Similarly to the way Tool mixed 10,000 Days in a way that gave each member equal sonic space, this mix stripped away a lot of the more overt studio trickery very cleverly (no doubt using a great deal of studio trickery) and left a pretty raw drum sound in particular, which I like.

Mangini sounds great with the band, Outcry and Breaking All Illusions are especially great.

Without a doubt the most complicated stuff he plays is on Outcry, though he's really, really tastefull on OTBOA and BitS.
