The title says it all.  They're so awesome on this album.  It's like a cross between his old and new style.  I actually enjoy listening to his solos again....

It's very good. At times his tone reminds me of his tone on SC, but for the most part it sounds like ADTOE. Would have liked a clean-tone solo somewhere, but what are you gonna do?

N4Player

John has awe inspiring moments on all albums IMO, but on ADTOE he really shines. Not a wasted note and his tone continues to evolve. So many chilling moments. It's no coincidence the man looks like Jesus.

My favorite is the BAI solo, its just got that feel!

Love the guitar tone on this album; and JP's solos are all at least very good; the highlights being the bluesy solo in BAI and the emotion in TITL's.

wasteland

I loved all of them. As triad said, my favourite are BAI's (among the very best JP has ever created) and TITL's.

They're just great, and not just their pattern.... :neverusethis:

There are a couple of great solos on the album (On the backs of angels, Breaking all illusions, Lost not forgotten), but one of the few things this album misses is a beautiful outro solo a la Octavarium, The Ministry of lost souls or The Best of times.

Not a fan of his solo tone in This is the Life. It was only upon my 5th listen that I realised that was actually a solo and not some background noise.

I am not really digging his lead tone on this album... too spongy sounding if that accurately descries what I am getting at,

his main solos like otBoA and LNF are decent, but nothing stands out. I am not thrilled with his note choice on the bluesy BAI solo, but his soaring solos in TitL and BAI are typical and sound JP. I

hope I am not the only one who thinks this considering I am usually floored at what he plays on every album and generally thinks he writes interesting solos that keep the listener on the edge.

For instance, aRoP, tBoT and tSF were great solos off of BCaSL and then there were great leads all over SC and theres no reason to keep naming others, but you get the point.

DarkLord_Lalinc

There's not one album in which Petrucci disappoints.

Jamesman42

There is no Petrucci solo on here that is notbad or mediocre. That said, his solo on Wither, TBOT, Repentance, and ITPOE Pt. 1 are all better than any of the solos on here, except maybe the one in BAI. Time will tell. That maybe the ONLY thing SC and BCSL have over ADTOE

Amazing performance, BAI's instrumental section is particularly breathtaking.

I would disagree, I think his solo on LNF is the most interesting and dynamic solo he's done in years. It possesses qualities that have been missing from his solo's for a long time.

BlobVanDam

I find the LNF solo quite forgettable and oddly phrased. The TITL solo is easily my favourite on the album, both for the solo and the guitar tone.

johncal

I think his tone so good because when John was growing up his mother used to say "I don't like your tone mister!" and he's been trying to improve it ever since.

I think Petrucci's playing is one of the most consistent things in Dream Theater's music. I actually think I rate the Lost Not Forgotten solo the highest off of this album. For those of you who are familiar with Explorers Club: Age of Impact, something JP plays during the outro of "Fate Speaks" sounds very similar to what he does at around 7:33 of the LNF solo. And that is awesome, since I've always loved that part. Same kind of feel, but not obvious enough to where you could say, "Oh, he copied that part". After that, towards the end of the solo, I get a jazzy feel from his note selection there, which is quite cool.

Sounds like the SC/BCSL tone to me. Not nearly as smooth sounding as SFAM or as crystalline as Awake, but a tone nonetheless.

reneranucci

I've heard better from him. I'm underwhelmed by his performance, knowing what he is capable of, I wish there were more and better solos on this album.

I see what U did there!  :rollin

They don't make them like Petrucci anymore. He never fails.

Dream Team

I wonder what he has cooked up for his new solo album?
