In his defense, I collaborated in making the list, and I wasn't entirely sure what all to count as ballads either.    So if there are silly things, I take part of the blame too.

I wouldn't consider "Solitary Shell" a ballad of any sort... move outside the warm embrace of the prog-metal world ( ) and it's really a fairly up-temp tune.  But, anyway, here's some rankage (subject to change w/o notice)...

1. The Silent Man.  I love AMBI, the whole thing.  Years ago I had a wonderful cat who had gotten old and blind in one eye and his health was deteriorating.  He would lay in the window next to me and I'd gently pet him and sing "The Silent cat" to him and sometimes the tears would stream down my face.  He'd close his eyes and purr...

4. Hollow Years.  My g/f and I "had a moment" at a DT concert with this one.

5. The Spirit Carries On.  Especially LSFNY.

6. Surrounded

7. Space Dye Vest.

I know it's early, but the ADTOE ballads seem to be holding up well.

So far the new ones are holding up pretty well. Also, I ranked Beneath the Surface pretty conservatively because I don't think it would be fair to put it ahead of those top three beautiful songs. However, with time... maybe it will deserve it.
