So I have a new girlfriend and everytime I get a new GF I introduce them to DT. So I sit down and explain to her the history of DT and play her the friendlier songs to get her into them. So far so good and then she tells me she loves watching drummers! sweet!!! So I tell her about MP's drumming dvd's and we sit down and watch portions of BC&SDrumming video, the SysDrumatic Chaos then Drums of Thoughts dvd's. After that we watched some of Live at Budokan and Chaos in Motion then the Spirit Carries On documentary bringing MM into the band then I played her OTBOA and some live footage from the latest Euro Tour..

First off she's digging the material I've been playing for her and I think the more she hears it the more she'll understand and know the songs.

But hearing about the MP saga and then watching MM's intro into the band she had some thoughts and things to say I hadn't thought of or noticed.

First, watching the drum dvd's in reverse order she noted how MP on BC&SD seemed to just be playing the songs and going backwards she noted more excitement with MP in each prior dvd. I had never really noticed this before, but she was dead on. The last MP dvd just seemed to be going through the motions. On BC&SD she was able to hear the words and pointed out how "The Best of Times" and "The Count of Tuscany" really pointed to his departure in her mind and wondered if MP had written either of these songs. We found out MP wrote TBOT's.

Watching the TSCO Documentary she really felt MM fit the band, even though I would not tell her who got the gig and let her find out for herself, she was hoping for MM.  She just felt as we all did that he was humble, down to earth and his playing was amazing. She pointed out things with his playing I never even noticed. Can I be more lucky finding her! ;-) One thing too she pointed out was MP's tattoo sleeving progression I hadn't noticed and how that didn't fit the other members.

So then I play some of the live videos from YouTube and when one with MP came up she actually got pissed at me and said "Why are you playing videos with the old guy" LOL She's clearly a MM fan and totally digs OTBOA!

We're both in our late 40's, I've been a fan since the early 90's, but her perspective on things blew me away. I can't wait to hear more thoughts the more she hears and sees the band. I just thought I'd share this, pretty cool IMO!

One thing I'll add is I did not bad mouth MP, I just explained his involvement in the band and the reasons behind his departure and let her piece it together herself, and she did. I'm afraid she's in love with MM and maybe JP's guns that she noticed had grown immensely in recent years!

It's nice hearing from a non-fan every once in a while.

This. Typically, you don't lead with the progressive metal.

No way, they need to know what I like and this time it's paid off. Welcome the newest DT fan, Stephanie! She even said that she thought DT's mellower stuff is great sex music!  :metal :metal :metal :metal

Remember most of us that went to HS in the late 70's already love Rush. So I just took her to the next level and I'm now falling in love with her!  :hat

Nah, Isay if you need to, just fart. If she comes back for more, she could be the one, if she runs, it was never meant to be..

My girlfriend's musical tastes are tough ones to change. I've showed her their singles and most accessible songs; she has liked the softer ones so far. Specially Through Her Eyes.

As for you, she likes them and likes to give opinions about them... That's a strong point!

Glad you said "if she runs". If the fart runs, that's a whole different stoory.

Pretty interesting post.  As you said toward the end of your post, I do agree that the tattoo sleeves could be seen as a small sign of MP changing from the other DT guys.  Look at his Adrenaline Mob pics and his arms are totally full of ink now.  The other DT guys don't seem to have any tattoos.  One or two tattoos is one thing, but full sleeves are a small sign of MP's changing tastes and personality.

Also, congrats on the new girlfriend!

This. Seriously, she already sounds like the ideal of a perfect woman to me.

That's cool, and lucky she liked them. I usually tell a chick I enjoy music a lot and asks if she does. If she does I ask her what kind and what her favorite band is.

LieLowTheWantedMan

In my town DT is actually kinda well received. Of course there are a lot of metalheads that hate them, but I know lots of people that at least listen to them every now and then.

rush-signals

LOL could be!  :omg: Actually my tatse in music is quite wide variety. I can listen to everything except rap and the modern stuff they call pop now. I prefer classic rock, country, modern rock and metal including SLAYER!!  :hefdaddy

Wow, that's a bit close to home for me too. :lol

But this could be either a good thing or a bad thing. For me I've just kept looking for the right woman, hopefully this is the one. Plus in my profession the divorce rate is very high and now that I'm near retirement, 2 years, I'm ready to find "that one".

Your girlfriend seems very open minded, which is good. Marry her. Now. You marry her now.

I've been slowly but surely making my girlfriend get into Dream Theater by taking the non-direct route. Which is, whenever we are go somewhere, I always play Dream Theater music in the car so she gets to listen to them and get the occasional "Wow. That sounds cool". Making her want more.  ;)
Anyways, she loved the TDOE ragtime solo.

Yeah the last woman I introduced DT to, I made the mistake of leading with Metropolis PT 1.. Which is a fucking masterpiece to me. But the circus sounding part didn't go over too well.

Yeah... I still can't listen to Forsaken without shuddering.

As for Octavarium, that actually caused an argument during a car journey. Bad move, Will...
