I was flipping through the booklet for Six Degrees a little while ago, and MP is credited as 'Lead Drums'. What exactly does this mean? Were there additional percussionists brought in for the title track? The booklet doesn't seem to list any additional musicians (except Howard Portnoy on gong for Great Debate).

LOL. "Hey kid ego, with your head above the clouds. Hey kid ego, whoah, come down."

Lead drums.  :rollin

There's a gong on TGD?

Lead drums?

MIKE PORTNOY?1
\o\ lol /o/

El JoNNo

I think James has percussion on some albums.

Jamesman42

Yeah but lead drums implies there is like...I don't know...rhythm drums being played elsewhere on the album
\o\ lol /o/

I would assume it refers to this. But it's still pretty funny wording. :lol

I don't think JLB's credited for percussion. Also Mike's full credit is "Lead drums, percussion and vocals."

Maybe because Jordan does something with his sounds that are drummy?

This. Probably in SDOIT, not sure.

I believe it's a tip of the hat to Rust in Peace - look at the credits on that album.   ;)
Quote from: BlobVanDam on November 13, 2015, 07:37:14 PMAs a basic rule, if you hate it, you must solely blame Portnoy. If it's good, then you must downplay MP's contribution to the band as not being important anyway, or claim he's just lying. It's the DTF way.

Madman Shepherd

I think James was only ever credited for percussion for live albums when he played the shaker or the tambourine or something.

Zook

The gong credit has to be a typo 'cause the only gong I hear is on SDOIT.

Kotowboy

They wouldn't let him put " Mike Portnoy - Dream Theater and Drums "

He played drums made of lead.

Well that was my other interpretation. Makes sense I guess as a Megadeth reference (I think Rust in Peace was in 'Inspiration Corner' for SDOIT) but it's still silly regardless of who does it.

:lol :rollin

I always thought this was an indirect credit to JLB playing tambourine or some sort of inside joke of that nature? Wasn't aware of the Rust In Peace thing before now, but that seems more likely honestly.

JediKnight1969

I read that the very same moment I opened the CD booklet for the first time and I thought it was just a joke about how good and massive Mike was (is).

Its meant to say the gong bass drum  :P Howard played it because MP does a double hi hat pattern and can't use his feet. Thats why he hits the floor tom in the live version of TGD!  :metal

I don't own Rust in Peace.   Can someone please explain the reference?''

In the sleeve notes it says "Nick Menza - Lead Drums, Back-Up Vocals".

goo-goo

Didn't MP's dad played some drums on The Great Debate IIRC?

He explains it on his "In constant motion" DVD

gong bass drum? Now that i think about it, it sounds like it would have to be at that part where it sounds like all the instruments are going into "phase-mode," before JLB sings "Turn to the light"
