So, with BC&SL's The Shattered Fortress Mike Portnoy had completed the entire Twelve-Step Suite. He always mentioned DT planned to perform the suite in its entirety at a concert.

So did they ever get around doing that during their last tour, or now with Portnoy gone, will that remain just a dream.

(Sorry if this has been asked before, as you can see I'm kinda new on this forum  ;D )

No, that never happened, and is not likely to ever happen. The rift between MP and the band is deep and will take a lot of time to heal.

Thanks for the info. Yes I was just hoping there is one old bootleg somewhere from the last tour, but its not to be.

tgstk2

well a lot of people would love that...
maybe in a future..which isn't near....

but you can always just copy/paste the songs from different bootlegs :-)

You *could*, but they never performed "The Shattered Fortress" live, so it'd be incomplete, and, as far as I know, there was no known performance of "This Dying Soul" segueing into "The Root Of All Evil", so whatever transition MP had in mind for that would remain unknown.

As for TROAE into "Repentance", the fade-out chord of the former would simply fade in to the intro of the latter, so it'd be eay to mix that.

I guess the most we could hope for would be someone taking the studio recorded tracks and remixing them into one album featuring all 5 songs/12 steps in one continuous suite with no real breaks between the songs. Luckily I already did this myself so I can enjoy the whole suite on one disc with no interruptions! It's pretty suite...er, sweet.

but... no Shattered Fortress :sadpanda:

tgstk2

you could ofcourse juste paste the orginial versions and tweak through some audio tool to give it a live/bootleg feel :hat

it's better to wait i  gues.

alexofsweden

would be sweet to hear a live version of it...but i doubt that would ever happen!! i´ve made 12 step suite song for my own use...just to hear to whole "song" without changing". the songs mix nicely togheter since they´re ending the way the next one starts :)

Millais

highly unlikely it'll ever happen now i'm afraid.

clichéd, but never say never.

Yeah me too. To much spare time FTW!

Yes, MP already had plans/ideas of making this into a live recording after the BC&SL tour (YtseJamRecords or thru an official Roadrunner live release).

I don't think this will ever see the light of day now... sad.  :-\

This is interesting, Steve! If you are authorized to share your knowledge on the subject, it would be cool to know if Mike was to include the whole suite in the regular setlist or would have rather had the band play it on a ad hoc filmed show. (if those details were already figured out) :tup

It's not a secret or anything... MP has mentioned this in some of his last interviews while still in the band and on his own forum... man, he plans for DT in 2012 already. The Twelve-Step Suite was one of them. The 5 songs, as a whole package into 1 live album... that was the plan.

senecadawg2

Probably never going to happen now. Even though none of them are real favorites for me it still would have been really cool to see.
Quote from: LithoJazzoSphere on November 28, 2024, 04:50:14 PMThe senecadawg who won 11 roulettes is dead and gone.  He is now diogenesdawg2.

First three were solid, but they really lost steam by the time it was over IMO, though I will admit Repentance has grown on me...  It's kinda cool, though the ending is a little too long...

Shattered Fortress is pretty cool I guess, it reminds me more of an Overture, but in outro form as it pulls from all the other pieces...  I do like the last movement of TSF...  That being said, nothing beats The Glass Prison.

Root of all Evil probably gets #2 for me!

RedKlouD72

I also connected the 5 songs, and exported it as one .wav
I think it'd be illegal for me to share it here.
Ya'll can do this with any DAW. just gotta save the songs to your computer as .wav

Think back to when 6Degrees first came out...  and when you opened up its booklet and saw that there were three sections for the Glass Prison.  I don't think it was explained yet what was going to go on with sequels to the song or nothin.
Remember first hearing that they are only the first 3 parts in a 12 step phenomenon?     Did you really believe they were going to go thru with it?   I didn't think it would actually happen for some reason.    I guess once Octavarium came out and we were 7 parts into it, I believed that it would be completed one day.     Glass Prison and Shattered Fortress are my favorite parts.

Like Metallica do.  :hat

sagar_k

My personal favorite is 'The Root Of All Evil'. I love to listen to all the CD versions of the songs as a playlist set too. But seeing them doing it live in a set-list would have been awesome. Too bad that's never gonna happen.

All their live DVDs are severely overdubbed or quantized. You think that's how S&M *actually* sounds ?

Pinga

I hope they *don't* play it live, since TSF is the biggest cockblock in prog epics history. However, if they really want to, they really should, since the lyrics are personal but in a completely different way than TBoT's are.

Mosh

I actually like Fortress. It's a great closer. I think too many people look at it as it's own song, but it really isn't. The other parts work fine as their own song, but The Shattered Fortress is like the epic closer, it's like the grand finale of Six Degrees.

Don't know, don't care. I also didn't know S&M were all of their DVD's.

I guess I got some rare valuable stuff then what with Binge and Purge, Cunning Stunts, their two new dvd's....etc.

Someone who went to that concert said they sounded pretty much exactly the same live as they do on the album. There were only minor adjustments done to it.

S&M is also my favorite record of all time, and got me into music in the very beginning. Hearing "Of Wolf and Man" with that orchestra literally opened my eyes to a whole world of music I had no idea even existed. That song changed my life.  :metal

You think that's how "Francais Pour Une Nuit" *actually* sounds? What with Lars' miraculous perfect timekeeping and double bass on Blackened ?

That's not evidence. Sorry.

Comparing the Nimes DVD audio to an official metallica soundboard of the same night is not evidence ?  :o

That it is. Kind of sums up all the previous songs lyrically & musically. I like how the later songs have lines from previous ones in the suite to maintain a kind of continuity. It doesn't look really forced & makes 'em flow smoothly.

blackngold29

It'll take some time, but I still think this will happen. They'll do it live with MP, then the rest of the show with MM, release it as part of a Blu-ray.

Space-Dye Vest with KM will be the encore. You heard it here first.
