Over the years, Dream Theater have proven time and time again that they can play the shit out of any song ever created.  I absolutely love hearing them play covers!  From Rush to Metallica to Queen to Dixie Dregs, I love it all.  I thought it would be cool to come up with a Dream Theater Dream Cover Album.  I hope this hasn't been done a million of times!  I think all the songs below would sound great with a slightly heavier/metal sound and the awesomeness of DT.

1.  Toccata – Emerson, Lake & Palmer (7:20):  Crazy bass, a nice drum solo section for Mangini, plenty of amazing keyboards and wacky sounds for JR and his iPad!  Not too mention how much more amazing it would be if Mr. Petrucci laid down a guitar track over this baby with a sweet solo at the end of the tune.

2.  Duel of the Jester and the Tyrant, Pts. 1 & 2 – Return to Forever (11:26): Dream Theater is absolutely perfect to play a Return to Forever cover.  I would love to hear them play an entire album.  Rudess playing Corea and Pertucci on DiMeola and Myung playing Clarke! Matches made in heaven!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6YShQZUMe7g   – Part 2

3.  Cygnus X-1 – Rush (10:21):  Dream Theater loves playing Rush and I don't think they have covered this one!  Well maybe they have lol.  This is one of my favorite Rush songs. Geddy is amazing on this track.  Could James pull it off, cause I doubt Geddy could in this day and age!

4. Magnum Opus: Father Padilla Meets The Perfect Gnat/Howling at the Moon – Kansas (8:25):  My favorite Kansas song could be taken to the next level.

5.  A Passion Play Part 1 – Jethro Tull (21:36):  This would sound crazy...but it's pretty much an impossible dream.

6.  Machine Messiah – Yes (10:25):  Just a fun song.  I love Drama.  This is definitely one of Yes' heaviest songs.

I would love to read everyone's ideas of songs or even entire albums you would love to see Dream Theater cover!

Outcrier

they could cover some Gentle Giant  :tup
or cover Megadeth - Rust In Peace(the album)

The Letter M

A whole album? I'd probably say Power Windows by Rush, as they (Rush themselves) don't play many of those songs anymore.

Also, Fragile by Yes, played in it's entirety as the 2nd set, with an encore of "America". It would be interesting to hear MM play Bruford's piece "Five Per Cent For Nothing", as well as JR covering Wakeman's "Cans And Brahms" and JP covering "Mood For A Day". I know they've covered "Heart Of The Sunrise" before, but it's still a kick ass song.

Another album I'd like to see them cover would be Wind & Wuthering by Genesis. The final three tracks would be EPIC to hear them cover, and being one of Genesis' darker albums in terms of sound and feel, it's right up DT's alley.

KISS 76

The cover albums were driven by Mike Portnoy. I don't think the rest of the band would be interested in doing another one now?

djentlemen

i would love to see them cover meshuggah

but in all seriousness, king crimson or mr bungle

Mladen

1. Led Zeppelin - Achilles last stand
2. Genesis - Firth of fifth
3. Rush - Red Barchetta
4. Iron Maiden - Revelations
5. Metallica - ...And justice for all
6. Pink Floyd - Sheep
7. ELP - The Endless enigma
8. Yes - Machine messiah

That's kinda cool.

Whoaaaahh, ohhh, ohhhhh. Whoaaaahh, ohhhhh, ohhhhhh. Waaah, ahhh, haaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaowwwwww

dbrooks22

They did Achilles already...

My list has only two:

1)  Forever Your Girl - Paula Abdul     (ok just kidding)

2)  Grace Under Pressure - Rush

Heavy synths since it was 1984, so JR would have plenty to do.  But the real reason is that, as previously stated in different posts, I think DT is at their best when dealing with heavier, darker song matter.  GuP is arguably Rush's darkest album.  Frustrations within the band brought them very close to breaking up, and a lot of soul-wrenching music is the result.  Neil plays with downright ferocity on tracks like Afterimage, and angst is apparent throughout the album.  Not only does it make for brilliant music, but it also has a rawness rarely found on any of their other work.  So for me, i'd love to see DT cover GuP.

dongringo

I agree with DT covering Return To Forever. Not only are they influenced by RTF, but JP is influenced by Al Di Meola. That would be something I'd love to hear.

champbassist

I'd love it if they cover Sting's Ten Summoner's Tales. Has a couple of tunes in odd times, for good measure.

Oooh, yes. Nice thread.
Let´s see.

How about:

1. Wishbone Ash - Time Was (9:32)
2. Pink Floyd - Dogs (17:04)
3. King Crimson - Epitaph (8:48)
4. Led Zeppelin - No Quarter (7:00)
5. Queen - Innuendo (6:28)
6. Genesis - The Cinema Show (11:04)
7. Yes - Heart of The Sunrise (11:27)
8. Bruce Springsteen - New York City Serenade (9:57)

Total playing time: 81:26. So DT would have to shorten some things. Maybe a cut of Dogs?
Anyway, this would kick some serious ass imho.

This. I still wonder why they haven't done a full cover song of Sugar Mice.

I'd like to see them do something just out of their comfort zone such as:

Fair To Midland - Fables From The Mayfly - 5 piece so everyone has their place although JLB would have a tough time with this

Incubus - Fungous Amongus - Interesting bass playing as well as guitar playing

dredg - El Cielo - I'd love to see them do a take on one of my favorite records.

JediKnight1969

I'd love a Rainbow compilation. In no particular order:

Man on the silver mountain
Catch the rainbow
Tarot woman
Stargazer ( I know, I know...)
A light in the black
Gates of Babylon
Kill the king
Rainbow eyes
Eyes of the world
Lost in hollywood
Spotlight kid
Difficult to cure
Maybe next time
Death alley driver
Tearin' out my heart
Stranded
Street of dreams
Wolf to the moon
Hunting humans
Black masquerade
Still I'm sad

Outcrier

Rush - Natural Science
Genesis - The Knife or The Cinema Show

Epic getting more epic than ever  :metal

LieLowTheWantedMan

Genesis - Supper's Ready
Yes - Sound Chaser
Jethro Tull - Aqualung
