I was thinking about how a Dream Theater song would be constructed, and I found the most difficult part to imagine was ending the song. It was then I realised Dream Theater end their songs very creatively, as opposed to the generic 'riff repeat, guitar slide down neck' a lot of bands do.

So, what's your favourite? Of course I'm not just talking about the last few seconds of a song, it can also include structured outros as it isn't any less part of a song ending, especially by prog-terms!

I really like the outro to Sacrificed Sons, how it builds up and then Jordan's string sound harmonises over the guitar, and then last few notes are really epic sounding and fits in almost perfectly (in terms of great contrast) to the intro of Octavarium

So, what's yours?

My all time favorite is Finally Free live scenes, Its majestic and amazing at the same time.

The Count Of Tuscany is my 2nd favorite. Like Finally Free its majestic and ends the song on a weird happy sad vibe.

Considering how awesome ACOS is as a song, the ending couldn't be better. I love it.

It begins and ends with Octavarium.

(See what I did there?)

PuffyPat

Octavarium or A Change of Seasons. Both epic songs with awesome endings.

Heretic

In the Name of God and Octavarium.

ITNOG's ending is just incredibly haunting and powerful, whereas 8VM's is orchestral and majestic. Both blow me away every time.

wammabe

Octavarium, In the Name of God has quite a nice ending too.

FiberglassMoon

Though I typically don't like fade-outs, especially to close an album, Learning to Live is just too amazing.

DreamTension

I love the last verse at the end of The Glass Prison.  Good stuff  :metal

The end of Erotomania (one of my favs) and its lead into Voices

Hell's Kitchen! Great ending, and also an amazing lead into... ;)

This Dying Soul ending: Pure wankerygasm  :tup

Jaffa

I honestly think OtBoA has an incredibly awesome outro.

Favorite intro - definitly Octavarium and Metropolis

Innocence Faded.

The outro is AMAZING.  The whole song is outstanding, but that outro is just a masterpiece.

Definitely Learning To Live. It's an absolute terrific way to close the song and the album it's on; it gives me this satisfying feeling I love to have while listening to the final moments of an album. It has this epic mood while it doesn't really try to convey it - it just does. I also like the ideas they had for the demos, and I'd love to see some combinations/variations of it live (which they have been doing for quite some time, especially during the most recent leg).

The outro for TCOT comes in second. Also a very nice way to conclude the song and the album.

Every single word of this.

As for the intro, Pull Me Under, Metropolis (also the original intro), Octavarium, The Count Of Tuscany.

No kidding.  Great stuff.

In a different light, I would like to point out a song for which the outro is my favorite part - Endless Sacrifice.  I don't even really like the song that much, but when I listen to it, the outro gets me jacked up.
Quote from: BlobVanDam on December 11, 2014, 08:19:46 PMHef is right on all things. Except for when I disagree with him. In which case he's probably still right.

Millais

Outro; Octavarium - still get chills every time JP hits that final note!
Ending; TCoT - perfect melodies and production!

Jirpo

Learning to Live... probably my favourite minute of music ever. I mean it just comes out of nowhere and sweeps you up. So beautiful....

RuRoRul

In The Name Of God
The Count Of Tuscany
Learning To Live

ITNOG and TCOT both have amazingly epic endings. Live At Budokan is awesome as well with JP's solo, but the studio version works perfectly on the album too. The Count Of Tuscany's ending and beginning are some of the best bits of DT ever, the finale is just special. The Learning To Live outro is also perfect.

Plenty of other DT songs have great endings as well. The Glass Prison comes to mind as an honourable mention, but really most of their best songs also have good endings.

The Best of Times
The Count of Tuscany

Both great emotional and powerful endings.  High on the goosebump meter.
