Hi Dream Theater Forums, this is my first post here, i had to join up and tell or ask you guys if you have noticed something i have , maybe its nothing at all but it is too coincidental not to post here! Im posting regarding the front cover artwork of the new album 'A Dramatic Turn Of Events'. We know Hugh Syme has created it and something hit me upon looking at the cover not long ago. Im not good at computers so i cant post a diagram of what i noticed but here i go!---   I noticed that if you put a clock face over the front cover, that the ropes symbolise 9:12 or in military time, 21:12!!! Is it just me or is this a planned coincidence since hugh syme created it? Id love if someone creates a diagram or picture of it as i dont know how yet.     Cheers and greetings from Down Under. Molly :P :omg:

Hey, welcome.  Great to have another Aussie on here.  Hoping for a Australian tour next year.  Interesting analogy, it could be a nugget, but I think it's probably just a coincidence.

MollyM

Hello, Thankyou.  :)   Yeah i cant wait for an aussie tour and cant wait for their 'new' stage show ive always yearned for Dream Theater to have a full blown stage production they soooo deserve it.   As for the cover its been doing my head in everytime i see it i see 21:12 in the ropes.  I love how this band and every aspect of this band makes my mind work. cheers

What does 21:12 mean?

Wow you guys must be new here.
I don't even like Rush and even I know what 2112 is. :lol

That's what too much time on DTF will do to you.

senecadawg2

Wait!  :justjen How did you manage to figure this out? What do you do in your spare time?

You know how some people listen to albums with movies to see if they sync up? Maybe MollyM holds a clock face up to everything he can find to see if they're 2112 in disguise.

Jirpo

Hahaha, that is one of the best nuggets I've ever seen! :lol

I think it's pure coincidence. But still, nice catch.

For accuracy, I have checked this against the high res artwork I have (4288x4290, in case anyone is curious), and checked the angles using Photoshop's ruler, and here is what I got-

The "minutes" hand is at 69.4 degrees from the vertical position (the 0 point). 12 minutes would be between 72 and 78 degrees. 11 minutes would be between 66 and 72 degrees. So if you rounded off to the nearest minute, it would be 12 past, however if you round down to what the minutes hand would truly represent (if you saw it represented digitally), it would only be 11 past. The margin of error on my measurement is only 0.3 degrees at most considering the thickness of the rope, so it can't strictly be at 12 past, but when read on an analogue clock, could be taken that way.

The "hours" hand would need to be between 270 and 300 degrees to be considered 9 o clock (or 2100 hours). It is at 276.3 degrees. When you factor in that this moves incrementally with the minutes, it actually corresponds to 12.6 minutes past the hour of 9.

Conclusion - minutes hand says 21:11, hours hand says 21:12.

So this theory actually holds up surprisingly well, although I'm betting it's just a crazy coincidence, and even crazier that anyone actually noticed and checked it. :lol

This was the first thing that came to mind when I saw the album art. I'm surprised that no one else noticed this. I didn't create a thread about it because I thought people would think its too obvious.

MollyM

Great to see im not the only one who saw that! Hugh Syme has used a 12 past 9 o'clock reference in previous art he has done for Rush. I wish this is a nugget but probably insignificant. Cant wait for the new album!!

:lol

And thats amazing Blob. I wonder if there is any way we could find out lol. Highly doubt its intentional though.

Jaffa

It seems like a stretch to me.

Or it did, until I read Blob's post.  Now I'm slightly less certain.

Just felt like posting this, to make it visual.

Thats amazing!!  :rollin Am releived people can see this! soooo not a coincidence

It's interesting because the angles of the rope on either side of the unicyclist aren't congruent, because of the angle from which we're viewing.  This means that Hugh made a conscious decision to do it this way.  I'm sure he tried different layouts with the ropes at different angles, but at some point, he decided on this one.

If that's how it happened (which doesn't seem unreasonable) then it actually seems more likely than not that he went with this layout because of the 21:12 thing.

WindMaster

Anyone else notice how incredibly symmetrical the cover is? Like the T in Theater is right at the 12 mark. Maybe Mr. Syme put a clock on after he did the art and made adjustments or something like that.

Notice that the clock overlay isn't quite centered though. The "T" just happens to be near the middle of the logo.

Jamesman42

It's prog o'clock, do you know where your drummer is?

Link between ADTOE and Clockwork Angels confirmed.

9:12 is the date the album release on digital download for those who preordered the deluxe edition  :)

I did this really quick, and didn't bother to adjust the size and center it properly. My guess is that Hugh centered the logo  ;)

Dr. DTVT

I wonder Dream Theater requested that, Hugh thought of it and suggested the idea to them, or he just did it on his own accord.

Anyway, nice catch Molly.

Actually, I've been hear long enough to be convinced into buying Rush's 2112... I didn't make the connection because a) I thought it was supposed to be DT-related and b) it stuck in my head as the time (with the : in the middle) and not a full number/year.
