With the upcoming US tour, I've been giving this some thought.  In my younger days I was a big fan of drum solos at shows, especially growing up as a drummer myself.  Now though, I find myself thinking..."I'd rather see another song on the setlist instead".  Now mind you, MM's Euro solos were coming in around 5 min's each.  We all know...there aren't many 4-5 min DT songs... :lol  BUT!!  If they would add a 5-8 min song, which would you prefer?

While drum solos like MM's on this tour are quite enjoyable, i would prefer to have another song on the setlist.
As for the short songs, i would be very satisfied with the addition of Anna Lee to the setlist.

If anyone should do a drum solo, I would prefer MM to do it. But I would still rather have another song in the set. Especially since it's DT...

if i'm not mistaken doesn't ADTOE contain shorter songs that may fit this length?

and another song definitely. A drum solo was a good choice in the warm up tour, but really in a tour supporting the album i don't think there should be a place for it. not my call though!

Normally, I'm not a big fan of drum solos, but I think it's a good way to introduce a new member, so I'd like to see MM get a solo this tour.

Exactly this. The support tour for DT12 shouldn't have solo spots though.

I totally agree.

I don't care who you are, drum solos are boring. They sometimes try to sneak them up on you, but at some point you get that sinking realization of "oh shit, this is a drum solo, isn't it?". If you're listening to a live CD/DVD, at this point you would hit the fast forward button. If it's a live concert, at least you can take a leak.

So I'm all for another song, especially since I love most of DT's "shorter" songs.

I agree, MM has the unique ability to create and make a drum solo like a song similar to Neil Peart. I can't wait to see it live.

I thought we all agreed there would be no more polls with "Kevin Moore" options? It's way past tired.

I don't like MM solos so, another song.
I've always felt mm's solos are very uninteresting and too much about technique then cool grooves.

JPX

I never want to see a solo from any musician. I'll go to a clinic for that. Song please.

hefdaddy42

I don't mind the drum solo if it is relatively short (like MM's on this tour).  However, I've seen some 8-10 minute solos in the past that would have been better served just being another song.

Drum solo.  Mangini deserves a lil 5-minute slot under the spotlight for each show after the documentary and all the buzz surrounding the drummer change.

This. I think we could deal with a drum solo on this tour only, and it's gonna be fun, Mangini freaked us all out so far.

This.  But in future tours, song.

If it's not a too long solo, it's definitely fine, especially if it's a special occasion like now with Mike joining.

ReaPsTA

What I know is that I'm really hoping to see a Mangini drum solo in Philly this October.

ResultsMayVary

Normally I'd rather see another song, but it would be sweet to see Mangini do a drum solo.

Global Laziness

Another song, but it makes sense to showcase Mangini right now I guess. I find non-Peart drum solos pretty hard to get into beyond the first 30 seconds though.

jayvee

I always thought the whole point of solos was to give the other musicians a quick break.

I'm not a huge fan of solo spots, I'd much much rather have a Budokan/Beyond This Life style spot.

Mangini gets to show off his technical prowess, but also we could see the chemistry. I love watched that section and just seeing them *click* in that way.

I usually love DT's shorter songs, but I see the sense in having a drum solo during the first tour. Since it will be the first time Americans DT fans will be seeing the band since the drummer replacement, I think there's still a place for a MM drum solo, though I would prefer a song.
But seriously, it might not be the most aesthetically pleasing piece of music ever, but the MM solo I've seen (YouTube video...) was quite amazing... It was a great way of showcasing his technical prowess and his incredible speed.

Fair points, actually. In this instance I can see the use for it. (I'd still prefer a song mind you, but your reasoning is good).
