So I am burning a CD for a friend of mine at work. He seems to be more of a mainstream rock kind of guy, not too deeply invested in music. He knows a lot of about 80s hair metal bands. That's pretty much extraneous info though. Anyways, I'm making 2 different CDs for him, separated by era. The 90s Era and the 00's or Modern Era.

I'm kind of having an issue with choosing the playlist. I'm not going for anything to crazy, but I want every album represented well enough and for him to get an idea about their sound. I'm still deciding whether to include WDADU, leaning towards no.

The only thing I have so far is The Glass Prison opening up the modern era CD.

Give me a good playlist, all albums represented. Each Disc needs to be at 80 minutes or less.

GO!

90s Era

Modern Era
1. The Glass Prison

#1
90s

The Mirror
Lie
Under A Glass Moon (?)
Pull Me Under
Just Let Me Breathe
Peruvian Skies
Fatal Tragedy
Home

00s

The Glass Prison
This Dying Soul
As I Am
Misunderstood
These Walls
Honor Thy Father
Forsaken
Constant Motion
Panic Attack
A Rite of Passage

Probably listed too much to be on a single CD there. lol.

SystematicThought

Really liking the 2nd disc there. The first disc is kind of hard for me to decide on tracks, as it's my favorite era. Opening with The Mirror is kind of a cool idea

ResultsMayVary

I re-arranged them a bit for flow purposes. I think the second CD is a lot better flow-wise now.

SystematicThought

I really want to end the first with Finally Free, but it's so essential to the album and the sound clips and ending, it just doesn't fit. Home is a possibility.

5.. Metropolis Pt. 1
6. Overture 1928
7. Strange DeJa Vu
8. Raise The Knife Or Voices
9. Trail Of Tears
10. Space Dye-Vest

That's probably a bad compilation but meh you can't go wrong with DT.

That modern era list listed is good, although I don't think it fits on one disc. I came up with my own list, and it was near identical, except without TDS and HTF, and with TROAE instead, and it came to 76 minutes, I believe. Aside from that, looks good.

SystematicThought

Definitely liking some of these play lists.

Last time I made a mix CD, disc 2 was

The Glass Prison
Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence (song)
The Count of Tuscany

Unsurprisingly, the guy never made it through it  :lol

Hehe.  Every time I've made a DT "mix tape" I've started with 6:00 and ended with Space-Dye Vest.

Winner. This is a very good starting point.

Instead of The Glass Prison, you could do The Count of Tuscany instead.  Of course, it would require some reordering, and it depends on what kind of mood that you're trying to make.  Octavarium (the song) should definitely be in there, though.

I'm surprised that talk of burning a CD is even allowed here.  :omg:

Meh. Burning whole albums to avoid purchasing DT albums is one thing, but burning a compilation disc to try and expand DT's fanbase is a bit different. DT are a word of mouth type of band, and I think this kind of thing is all in a good cause. Then if this guy likes what he hears, he'll probably buy their albums, which he would not have bought had he not heard them first. It works out in the end.

Well, maybe things would be different if Greatest Shit was actually a decent reflection of the band.

KevShmev

If he is a mainstream rock guy, then I wouldn't give him anything too long at first (like, nothing over 15 minutes).  For example, Octavarium is really good, but might be a bit too much for him at first, especially with that really slow buildup.

I'd go with:

90s
Pull Me Under
Take the Time
Metropolis
Caught in a Web
The Mirror
Lie
Peruvian Skies
Fatal Tragedy
Home
The Spirit Carries On

00s
The Glass Prison
Misunderstood
Solitary Shell
As I Am
Honor Thy Father
I Walk Beside You
In the Presence of Enemies, Part 1
A Rite of Passage
Wither

I think that would be a good start.  Every studio album from the 90s and 00s is represented, nothing too long is on there, and enough catchy songs are on there to grab him.

While not ideal choices for some, I think, for a mainstream rock guy, songs like The Mirror, Lie and Honor Thy Father are rocking and fairly straightforward enough to possibly be appealing to him.

atalkingfish

You must have Panic Attack on there, it's essential for people who are new to DT

Wow, it's funny to see some albums which contain almost all the DT songs I dislike XD (there's usually no more than one per album, so it's actually statistically unlikely, I think...)
Anyway, here's my two cents:

90's (Not sure how good the flow is, but this is a considerably lighter CD than others posted):
Overture 1928
Strange Deja Vu
Lifting Shadows Off a Dream
Surrounded
Space Dye Vest
Hell's Kitchen
Learning to Live
Metropolis Pt.1
Through Her Eyes
Home
Trial of Tears

Length: 1,4 hours (that's how my iTunes measures time...)

00's:
The Root of All Evil
Wither
Stream of Consciousness
Disappear
The Best of Times
Endless Sacrifice
Forsaken
Octavarium (also considered In the Presence of Enemies and The Count of Tuscany for this spot, but Octavarium seems to be the most universally loved out of those three)
