Just listening to this song again, and I can't stand that screeching metal noise at the end. Obviously it's not that long and it doesn't ruin the song or anything, but I can't figure out  why

Can't figure out why it annoys you or what it is?

It's JP scratching his guitar pick along the grooves of the strings I believe

Sorry if you Misunderstood. I can't figure out why its even in there.

Love that song, but I don't get that part either.

I also dislike that section.  I would've loved for them to cut that section, cut the cheesy-sounding (in my opinion) overture from disc 2, and cut the very boring "Goodnight Kiss."  Then, you can possibly fit everything onto one disc of awesome music.  Currently, these "weak" spots cause me to rank 6DOIT behind I&W, Awake, Scenes and Octavarium.  But if it were just one disc of awesomeness, it would likely jump a few spots for me.  I know I'm in the minority because many people love 6DOIT, but I feel there are a handful of troublespots (and the end of "Misunderstood" is one of them) that prevent it from being really great.

6DOIT is perfect as is.

I don't understand that part in Misunderstood either, but something tells me that's the point.

I think it's great! It's like nothing they've ever done, I like that part, and I want it to stay there, Misunderstood is easily in my top 10, and the entire song is pretty much PERFECT.

YES. I MUST REMEMBER THIS.

And I initially found the outro to Misunderstood annoying, but it's perfect as is. It's supposed to be noise, and that's exactly what it is.

italianoman

Yeah dudes, I actually really like that part as well. I guess it kinda fits the whole backwards-forwards-backwards (or whatever) solo too; ample insanity. I'm biased/10 though because SDOIT is my favorite album of ALL TIME.

Definitely a good section. I don't mind it at all.

Goodnight Kiss is not boring, especially with one of Petrucci's best slow emotional solos, and great vocals by LaBrie. And while the orchestral sounds of Overture are a little cheesy, the composition is just too damn good (and it reminds me of Ocarina of Time, which makes it awesome).

I personally think there are a lot more parts of Six Degrees that could do with some cutting, but I seem to be in the minority in that opinion on this board.  I know it gets a lot of love around here, but it is closer to the bottom of DT releases for me.  But hey I love WDADU and tons of people here hate it.  Whatever, everyone has different tastes.

The outro fits the entire mindset for the song perfectly and makes the whole things that much greater.  The mood of it just matches getting lost in your own desolate thoughts so well.

jdprsaga

I most say that i like that part, it's like he was experimenting (altho is not that experimental) but it's like telling he is screaming.

i still remember the day i got the album (i got it for about $90 in guatemala.. they rob me), i liked it because i had a similar solo on a song from my band about wanting to be a vampire (not progressive music) and the part with that solo sounded pretty haunting. So i was like "wow JP had the same idea as i did" i was pumped!

I think that part is interesting, but I made a mixcd for my parents, for their car, and my dad ALWAYS went "WTF is this shit" and skipped it when that started. Then again he can't wait to skip most DT stuff I give them.

I always loved that part, that kind of weird stuff makes SDOIT more memorable for me.

If my parents ever did that too me, I'd wait till they're listening to a disk they like, take it out of the CD slot, and throw it out the window.

EDIT: I just heard an extremely creepy voice and heavy breathing during that section on the left channel thingy, I'm going to have nightmares tonight.

tri.ad

Yeah, the voice and the loud breath at 9:06 add a nice level of creepiness to this section.

Exactly, and it's an extremely annoying sound when it's done slowly like that.

One of my favorite DT songs, and it wouldn't be the same without that ending.

No kidding. I remember awhile ago someone on these forums tried arguing to me that the section wasn't music because he couldn't think of anyone else that had done something similar  :lol

Indeed. It also serves as an excellent breather. I don't know about you, but The Test That Stumped Them All -> Solitary Shell? That's a bit intense.

As for the OP... dude, it's called progressive metal for a reason. It's clearly meant to be a bit odd, creepy and out of place.
