And I don't mean as in, "We don't know because we can't understand what he's saying." because Dream Theater isn't a band with any of those, but like... what songs are the least lyrically interpreted and understood? Let's strike Under a Glass Moon since that's a given. The rest?

"Surrounded" doesn't seem to have much of a general consensus; I've always thought it was about losing faith in something and then being better off because of it ("I heard the stained glass shatter all around me"), but I've had people vehemently disagree.

TheGreatPretender

What about Metropolis? I honestly don't think the original had anything to do with the storyline told in SFAM.

Exactly what the song is about is not known, but spiritual enlightenment seems to be the major theme. During the Images and Words tour, the band dedicated the song to Arthur Ashe, the pioneering African-American tennis player, who life was tragically cut short by AIDS.

And even though it's missing the last few years, you really should read through their FAQ. That way, you won't need to start so many threads on the DT-side. :)

I hate to derail a thread, but is this sarcasm?  Because I can name quite a number of DT tunes that require a lyric sheet to determine what exactly is being said.  Most of them are pre-SFAM though.

Exactly. For instance, half of the songs on Awake fall under that category.

Don't half the songs in the entire music industry fall into that category, though? At least in parts?
I know I sure as hell can't make out half the lyrics of any given song.

You misunderstand. There are artists whose songs haven't been transcribed to lyrics because they're too hard to understand.

Wait what?

He's just saying we have access to all of DTs lyrics, that's all.

Aniland

Yes, where there are artists whose lyrics are still a mystery sometimes to the fanbase. It's not like there are any DT songs where what LaBrie is saying is being disputed still.

I would guess that is because they have the lyrics in the booklets. If you ever hear something you don't understand clearly, you just grab the booklet and check.
I think I've seen a thread here where people posted misheard lyrics  :P

"We don't know because we can't understand what he's saying."

Afterlife - Original Chris Collins lyrics.  If anyone can tell me what the hell he is saying i will bake you a cookie.

Vital Star - I have no idea what the title means, let alone the subject matter.

March of the Tyrant (well okay, this one's about "Dune," but do alot of folks know this?)

Lifting Shadows Off a Dream - one of the few remaining DT mysteries.

Well like, you know the expression, "This meal will stick to your bones." as in, "It's really hearty food and you're going to be satisfied and full by the time you've eaten it."? Yeah... I thought he was saying that.

Instrumental III - No Sleep Since Brooklyn (live at L'Amour 9/25/86). Been around for a long time, and fairly easy to find. Also features Cry For Freedom with lyrics (and first use of MP/JP backing vocals)
