Alright I know this might not be completely topic worthy but of all of DT's songs this one seems to be the most vague and I just can't find anyway of obtaining meaning from it.

So anyway if anyone has interpretations on the lyrics please post because though I love the lyrics it seems to be a damn word salad.

PowerSlave

I think that word salad was sort of the point. Have you ever read the lyrics to round about from yes? Maybe it's a prog tradition?

There was an interpretation that the narrator is sitting in his car on a rainy evening, waiting for his girlfriend to whom he wants to propose (which is kind of a nifty interpretation imo).

Then again, I could imagine that not even JP knows what it's about.

That wasn't an interpretation.  Petrucci said that he was sitting in his car one night and watched the rain reflecting off glass street lamps and decided to write a song about it.  The "glass moon" is the street lamp.

It's interesting how JP can turn a trivial event such as the above into such poetic lyrics, but then describe what would seem like a life or death event in lol worthy manner, a la "MY BROTHA"

I've heard JP's description of the UAGM lyrics before, and I totally believe that was his inspiration.  But then I read the actual lyrics and decide he just had some bad shellfish that night.

I've honestly never really paid attention to the lyrics enough to try to interpret them... the instrumentals are too awesome  ;D

And than he asked James to try said shellfish to see if it was bad and well... we all know what happened after that shellfish incident

Someone around here said that there is absolutely no meaning to Under a glass moon, and that it's just supposed to be one of those ''What the fuck?'' lyrics. I like to believe that's the case.  ;D

:rollin  Agreed!

Love the song, love the lyrics.

If the above story is the inspiration for them, that's pretty awesome.

I wish Petrucci would write lyrics like this again, either way.

The lyrics to Ones Who Help To Set The Sun were also inspired by a rainy glass night.

I thought it was about a guy going on a drive and having a near-death-experience.

I think (a theory) it's somehow based around H.P Lovecraft's short story, "Crawling chaos" -

Actually, when I read about "The dark eternal night" over at DTfaqs (Norway), and it being based on Lovecraft's "Nyarlathotep" (not to mention
the monster-slaying Chaos in motion animation!) I asked my pal who's a big Lovecraft fan, and after he read the lyrics of UAGM, he told me his theory about some similarities between the song and "Crawling chaos" - then he sent me the textbook,
and while not exactly, I gotta say, there are some themes here and there that made me wonder -
Liquid shadows, the night awaiting the lamb's arrival - which is some sort of a deity (or a revelation) in the story.
