I love how the OP started this thread for people to vote for DT and everyones voted for someone else :lol  Anyhow I voted for Rush  :lol

Yeah, I knew when I started this thread that DT wouldn't win the poll. I just thought since this is DTF we could at least give them some votes just so they get some. But oh well. I've seen so many concerts now that there's no way I could pick my best live act at this point, so I figured why not vote for DT since they are on the list.  ;)

This thread should really be moved to GMD at this point.  :corn

Anyway, show some love for DT! Yes?

Considering that there are close to two handfuls of artists on that list alone that are better live than DT, nah.

TL

I love DT, and greatly enjoyed seeing them live, but Rush and IM both put on just an incredible live show.

Aniland

ReaperKK

I've seen many of those shows and most are better than DT.

Roger Waters got my vote.

Rammstein for me. It's not the best music but as a whole package live it's incredible

Current standing:

Rush 39.35%

Iron Maiden 9.11%

Guns N' Roses 9.04%

Dream Theater 6.26%

Porcupine Tree 5.9%

So DT is in 4th place at the moment just ahead of PT. At least someone is voting for them. I wonder who? Because they definitely aren't from anyone here on DTF who claim to be their biggest fans.  ;)

mittinagus

I would've voted for G & R if Axl would'nt have kept us waiting 3+ hours, so my vote goes to Iron Maiden...

I've seen DT live like 7 or 8 times...............they're not the best live act I have seen.
This. Iron Maiden and Metallica pulled a better show.

lonestar

I voted DT, though Waters and Rush I thought were better shows, and Yes wasn't listed.  Just giving some love to my boys. :heart

G'N'R are the worst live band I've ever seen, but that was theoriginal band and not the good musicians Axl employs now. His voice is like a cat being shagged by a rottweiler. If he turns up.

KISS need to be on the list. More than 35 years of awesome live shows.

Rush are always great live but nowadays play too much newer stuff which I don't like. And charged too much on the recent UK tour.

Voted DT 'cos I've always had VFM, especially in the "evening with" days.

Can't remember if Bon Jovi were on the list or not. I love the band but since 1990 they bore me silly live.

Voted Porcupine Tree.

That. Even if you are not a fan of their music, they are so tight live.

DT was good live, and really the only thing I still enjoy about the band, but they aren't in the top 3 live shows I've seen. Maybe 5.

I would never vote for them because I traveled 6 hours round trip and they were drunk and sloppy. Not to mention Axl stopped the show for about 20 minutes and set off on a rant about how they were going to walk off the stage and never come back if people didn't quit setting off bottle rockets. I understood the safety factor, but they sucked live that night.

GandL

Rush and DT for Music, Zappa and Bob Marley for the entertainment.  :hat

The absence of Nine Inch Nails on that list makes me sad.

CrimsonSunrise

Another very subjective poll.  I say it depends on what you look for in a concert.  For me, it's the music.  Been to plenty of shows with great lighting...special effects, etc...  I'll take a solid musical performance over any of those.  I've seen a few of the top bands on that list, and for me...DT blows them away.  Including Rush, Metallica, and G&R.

I don't claim anything. I prefer Muse live based on the fact that I've experienced it but I haven't seen DT live.

El Barto

Maiden.

I've seen Rush countless times, and while it's always a good show, and occasionally spectacular, they have too many things working against them.  There setlists are inflexible, and rarely particularly strong.  Their performance are far too rigid.  (I'd like to see them loose the clicktrack and just wing it sometime.  I'm sure they'd do great.)  They tune much of the classics down so Geddy can sing them and that's often times a real detriment (2112!).  While they always play well, they never play flawlessly.  Contrast that with DT who play different songs every night, play them flawlessly, and play them on the fly leaving plenty of room for improvisations and whatnot.

That said, I've never seen a Maiden show that didn't leave my floored.

I didn't say everyone here claims to be their biggest fans. But many here are.  ;)

I agree with every word. I've also seen many major shows with all the fixins, but seeing DT's one off show in Portland last year in a tiny dive called Roseland Theater with no lighting or effects whatsoever (their stage show was in Seattle being set up for the Maiden tour) was one of the most intense concerts of my life.

Rarely strong?  Are you kidding?

Huh?  Last time I checked, Rush do not play to a clicktrack live.  They don't even play to a backing track (like how U2 does on certain newer songs).  All of the music you hear is either played or triggered by them on stage.

Quote from: El Barto on June 12, 2011, 01:10:46 PM
They tune much of the classics down so Geddy can sing them and that's often times a real detriment (2112!).

Would you rather they not play those old songs at all?  Because the Temples of Syrinx section of 2112 would be practically impossible for Geddy to sing now if they didn't tune it down a bit.

Bollocks.  No band plays flawless live.  Not Rush.  Not Dream Theater.  No one.  Besides, there is more to a concert than playing flawlessly, and when it comes to light shows, entertainment on the back screens, etc., Rush absolutely blows Dream Theater away.  It's not even close.  Rush is much more of a total package live than Dream Theater.

From the mere showmanship point of view, DT is certainly in the bottom half of the live acts I've seen. They've gotten better over the years, but they're still like salt columns on stage a lot of time. If the bass player kicking a beach ball is ranked among the most exciting things that have happened on stage, you know they're not the best showmen.

Could be worse. I would much rather that DT did this during Take the Time rather than omitting the tough verse entirely.

I voted for Maiden, though I am seeing Rush for the first time this Thursday.  Pumped!

I think tackling JLB on stage overtook the beachball.  ;)

Sorry but TOOL beats out all of them. Seen them 5 times and everytime was fucking fantastic. Best light show, MJK's odd remarks and quotes, plus the best tuned/sounding band I have heard live. Very very clean.

If DT had some interaction with the fans in between songs it would be great. They go out, they play, they take a bow. Sorry but I was a bit disappointed. Yes they were technically great, but very stale, almost robotic....sorry.

That is why I love Opeth concerts, Akerfeldts stories between the songs are hilarious, and he loves talking with the crowd. Whats even better its just off the cuff, whatever comes to his mind. James could take a cue from that.
