i first noticed MM years ago on youtube in that famous steve vai solo where he does that thing on his snare with 1 hand (taking a comic book with the other) where other people would do that with 2 hands. i think it's some kind of gravity blast technique?

ever since than i thought that guy was killer. so during the years i followed him but there's not that much to follow when your a session drummer. clinics are normally of crappy sounds quality on youtube....and now having him in DT is like WOW. i'm so curious of what he will bring to DT drumming wise. the one thing that stands out it that whatever crazy pattern JR or JP or JMX will bring up he can play it....easily.
also in terms of difficulty they can bring dt to a whole new level, where mpt1 was crazy at parts. they can turn that up a notch. as mm is like 4 different drummers at one, all of his limbs can be considered as 1 full drummer...

Those books were actually his "Rhythm Knowledge" books! That is what makes it even funnier!!! He is saying- read these books I developed and you can do this!

I might add at this point that this particular famous Mangini solo was taken in Poland, Warsaw ;) During Steve Vai show at Congress Hall  :metal

I'm very excited about DT11, but I still don't like any of the solo MM videos...

Ahah, noticed now that in the video Mike's splashes and cymbals still have codebars.... They're clearly new!

You know, I know it's Mangini and all, but damn, I still have to say I like Minnemann better as a drummer. This is just awesome, and IMHO blows the MM videos out of the water:

^I dunno, it wasn't better or worse than any Mangini video I've seen. It was kind of anticlimactic.

55 seconds in and I already like it more than all Mangini videos. Minnemann has such a liquid-like quality to his playing. It's so smooth.

DT music would have received quite the inspiration had Minnemann been the one, but as we know there are many more factors involved in choosing a drummer than musicality. :)

That may be true, but I have a feeling no matter which drummer they chose, they would have written the album without them as they did with MM, and just given the new drummer the songs to make their own parts after-the-fact. We won't know what kind of truly creative force MM will be until DT12, if at all, so to say that any of the other drummers might have inspired the new album might be a moot point.

Either way, I do agree, Minnemann does have a certain liquidity to hi playing but Mangini has a lot of power, which is more what DT is about. I think Minnemann would be a better fit in bands like King Crimson or Porcupine Tree or even Marillion, bands who pride themselves more on atmosphere rather than technique and flair.

Not that that video isn't incredible, but this whole judging drummers by their drum solos thing still bothers me.  You can say the drummer doc was edited to pimp Mangini and probably be right, but his performances felt like hearing Dream Theater.  Minnemann felt like LTE.  Since a lot of what I don't like about DT's newer music comes from their emulation of LTE... well... yeah.

In general I would agree, but what really struck me about the above video is that as opposed to many Mangini videos I have seen (or to be exact, all Mangini videos I have seen), Minnemann was clearly more concerned to creating a piece of music.

I can definitely see us arriving at different conclusions because yeah, IMHO DT could use a bit less metal and a bit more LTE. :lol

I fully understand though why they chose Mangini over Minnemann. Mangini is an excellent drummer who can easily play MP's stuff, but he is also a lot closer to MP in feel than Minnemann. And I think this late in their career DT is not willing to completely rock the boat.
