apologies if it's been posted before...

Not a DT video, per se, but it shows his DT kit a bit more and some nice playing

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MFFdikTwPmg

bosk1

Nice.  I like seeing actually using the kit.  It doesn't actually seem so...cavernous with him sitting back there playing it and actually utilzing all the instruments.

Aniland

Come off it, bosk. You only like the video because the company is called Vater.

TheMadgician

I'm not particularly familiar with Manginis previous work. Was any of that material new?

jeebustrain

not sure.

But I can say that I use Vater Slicknuts myself and they're really cool. I use Vater sticks as well

@ 2:20 it sounds like "chris and kevin's excellent adventure" but i guess it's the wrong drummer  :omg:

climberboy

I'm a big fan of the long bouncy hair!!

That made me really happy too.

tgstk2

although I love it for him being the new DT drummer...
this was the first time i heard/saw him actually saying it....kinda strange but very cool...

i looked at the video closely and his expressions make him look like robert the niro from time to time...

The Silent Cody

:omg: I literally lol'd at 3:40.... freaking amazing, I totally love this guy!!!!  :metal

Nic35

I really enjoyed his playing on the video. Awesome guy.

Cannot unsee it.

The front snare (I think) has part of the DT symbol on it, does it not?
\o\ lol /o/

JPX

Very cool video. There is quite a fair chance that some of those could have been new DT beats is there not?

abydos

Cool video. Don't know if it's the way it was mic'd (it probably wasn't) but I didn't really like the bass drum sound but other than that - it's awesome.

Hell yeah ;D

Drumming sounded good to no surprise. Smooth and flows almost liquid-like.

CrimsonSunrise

Nice!  Yeah... I noticed the 1/2 DT logo on the snare.  Also.... at 3:38??  One handed??  SICK!!!!! :metal  Love the way he uses his cymbals during fills, sometimes exclusively.

Mladen

Incredible stuff. I hope those are some drum patterns from DT11.  :metal :metal :metal

darkshot

That is part of the Majesty logo yes, but I think maybe its just the greek symbol Phi, which is inside the DT logo.  He had that same symbol on his kit during the documentary when they called him to welcome him into the band, so it was probably there before he even auditioned for Dream Theater.  I'm not sure what Phi means in this case, but its probably just a weird coincidence that its part of the Majesty symbol. :lol

that's been the graphics on his signature snare since it was released a few years ago - long before DT.

On another note, I just heard that Mangini's new custom tour kit has been finished and they're putting it through a photo shoot and delivering it to Mangini right now. I can't wait to see it. I heard the custom airbrushed My Little Pony graphics came out great.

I was more than a little suprised at the Zildjan ZBT's...  I would have figured him for an A Custom guy.   The ZBT's are just kind of, well,  cheep. :lol   Amazing grooves though! :metal

whatever works - he obviously likes the sound. I think they sound great

bosk1

ZHT's, actually, which are a bit of a step up and are between the ZBT's and A Customs.  Still, ZBT's aren't bad.  I play them since I'm just an amateur and don't want to spend big bucks on stuff like that, and I think they sound great.

ZBT's don't sound horrible at all. This video just made me realize the sound I can get out of them

TAC

The guy is a riot. Love him more every time I see him.
Quote from: wkiml on June 08, 2012, 09:06:35 AMwould have thought the same thing but seeing the OP was TAC i immediately thought Maiden or DT related
Quote from: Stadler on February 08, 2025, 12:49:43 PMI wouldn't argue this.

tri.ad

I loved this demonstration. I particularly liked the sound of the snare, it was clear and had lots of punch; if it sounds like that on the new album, I'd be really happy.

Ben_Jamin

I can't see it on mobile :( it plays the audio and shows a black screen.

Nope I went back and looked, it is deff a ZBT.  I dunno I am a keybaord player not a drummer my son is the hardcore drummer, I just know that he had a 5 pack of ZBT's for about half of what one A Custom cost back when we first bought him his pearl set, then when he got his DW set he wanted "better sounding" cymbals so dear old dad was forking out a fortune for A Customs.   After we got the A Customs he showed me the differences in sound.  The ZBT's sounded thin and tinny compared to the A Customs.  I guess if thats the sound UR goping for then thats what you get.

I wasnt putting MM down at all, just was suprised byt the choice of gear was all.

bosk1

Oh, okay.  I see which ones you are talking about.  Yeah, that one set of hi-hats where it zooms in are definitely ZBT's.  The only other cymbal where you can see the model is the second one on the right, which is a ZHT.  That's the one I thought you were talking about.

What an awesome dad!!!    Wanna adopt me???? :lol

cookienut

I use A custom Projection Hats and I suck! This guy is world class and he uses ZBT's? Lol...it must be opposite day today.

But he just proved in that video (and made me realise) that not too many people will be able to cover DT on the drums anymore.

He does.  And his playing looks really smooth.  Not to take away from Minnemann or get into a MM vs. MM debate, but when watching the auditions, Marco just seemed so herky-jerky and almost "off the rails" in his playing style.  Yeah, he could seriously play, and yeah, he looked happy as a clam playing, which was really cool.  But...not sure how to describe it, but his style just made me really uncomfortable to watch.  I love watching Mangini's playing.

Not that he will, but if there is one thing he could "steal" from Portnoy's repertoire, I would love it if he started releasing drum cam videos of him doing DT material.
