The new Opeth album, Heritage, got announced today as a September release. I'm wondering, do you think that they'll now tour together maybe?

Lotion

I don't think so. I'm sure Opeth wanna do their own tour. Also, IMO 3 tours in a row with Opeth is too much. I think getting Opeth was more a MP thing to do.

Global Laziness

Probably not but it'd be awesome. I still haven't see Opeth live but I really want to; hopefully I will this summer at Heavy TO.

Well, assuming DT want to go back to doing three hour shows, probably not.  It would be cool to see them do a co-headlining thing, though.  Each band gets an hour and a half plus an encore for each (twenty minutes each?), switching up who goes on first each night.  THAT would be amazing, I think.

ariich

No idea, but they've toured together twice in the last few years, so I don't see what would be THAT exciting about it. ???

I actually think that's quite likely. And incredibly epic if it happens. That would be my two favorite bands combined into one inferno of awesomeness.

Dream Team

Oh geez I hope not. Already suffered through that during Progressive Nation 2008 and my wife was like "what the heck is this crap?!?!" Please please please no.

+1000. It would be great to tour with a band that had a broader appeal for a change.

skydivingninja

Bands with broader appeal?  Touring with DT?  Does not compute.  :lol

And I think we need to remind ourselves that other members of the band like Opeth as well, and it wasn't just MP.  JM has called Watershed a "masterpiece" and James mentions them a lot in interviews when asked what music he likes.

That would be really cool, but each band deserves its own headlining tour so I doubt they'd tour together. I can't believe I missed ProgNation08. Always loved Opeth, and BTBAM became one of my favourite bands shortly after.

Like someone already said, they have toured together quite alot these last few years, I honestly don't see the point in doing it again. At least wait a few years. I saw them on the Progressive Nation tour in September 2009 in Stockholm and it was fine, I love Opeth but I can't wait to see a full-on Dream Theater show again.

Nick

Been there, done that. Mike obviously won't have any input on things this time around so they can't be ruled out completely by his rule of never doing the same band in the same market twice. Still, I think JR and JP have plenty of musicians they'd love to share with the world and so I don't think we'll see DT and Opeth together in the fall.

And if they do tour together I will be quite unhappy, as it will basically be a sign of JP and JR letting the label start encroaching on the independence DT worked for many years to achieve.

I hope not, that be three times in 4 years. Onto something different... Evening with again

Nighthawkwill7

As much as I love Opeth, I would rather have an Evening With type of show.

3+hours of DT= :hat  :metal

Imagine, an evening with Dream Theater and Opeth, both with 3 hr. Set lists

Gotta admit, I'd fall asleep. It's not because of the music, it's just that's a bit overkill  :lol

Arch/Matheos (the new Fates Warning group) is also releasing their first album in Sept.  They would be a good opening act for DT!  I loved when they toured together in 2003.

I second that - I voted "No" as in "Please God, no!"

Yeah, I'm not seeing them use the same opening band for two consecutive tours. Half the joy is that both bands get their music exposed to wider audiences. The main band will benefit from a couple who came for the opener, the opener will benefit from a load who came from the headliner. Repeating the same opening band doesn't really help bring either band's music to anyone new. Not to mention that they've both got fairly similarly-sized fanbases in different genres, which makes sense in the context of Progressive Nation, but either way you'll have people coming for one but not the other, or having people leave after one band, etc. etc.

As much as I do like Opeth I'm not particularly seeing it. Regardless of the convenient timing.

Jamesman42

It's not because I've already seen it (and have seen both bands 3 times each)...I'd rather for different openers or an Evening With... show.
\o\ lol /o/

?

No, the Opeth management guy Jasper posted here that Opeth are planning a headlining US tour later this year. I guess there wouldn't be time for a DT/Opeth tour then.

I would love that too, but only if there was a decent hour or two break in between in which you could go grab a coffee or something. It would have to start in the afternoon, at like 3.

...what would the label have to do with anything if both bands talk to each other and say "yeah another tour would be cool?"

Thinking about it a little more, it probably won't happen because they've done two prog nations together already, and they'll be looking for someone new (or do evening withs), but since I haven't seen Opeth live it would be cool to see them with DT in that coheadlining scenario I mentioned.

King Postwhore

As much as I'd love that since I haven't had the chance to see Opeth I'd want to see the new DT lineup in a 3 hour setting first.
