Didn't MP say something like "Everyone hates drum solos" on the 5YIaLT commentary?

Nevertheless, a short spot for the new guy to show off seems in order.

Believe he said that he hated doing drum solos, not that everyone hates them. Correct me if I'm wrong, it's been awhile since I watched that commentary.

need the touring infinity style guitar solo back. One of the greatest moments of my life was Jp's 8 minute guitar solo.

DarkLord_Lalinc

Playing a short spot will probably reassure the drummer's skill and chops for the DT fandom. Not every DT fan is an internet geekxpert who has seen every video the drummer has available on youtube, so I think something, besides playing DT songs live, can be needed so fans get to accept him and embrace him as a whole.

inoku

sorry man, the chai latte takes precedents over the drum solo

any way, i think a drum solo like MP did in the end of finally free would be great

Yes Yes Yes Yes Yes

The new drummer isn't going to be Ian Paice. So I would prefer no...

JediKnight1969

No solos at all! Give some space for more songs like Iron Maiden!

How in the fuck can this be considered awful?

Yep. Seen that one. The last 30 seconds were ok but the three minutes before that were about as exciting as a Chroma Key song. I'm sure it was technically demanding, just soulless and boring.

This. Really technical and fast but....

I'd much rather see an extended jam session with the whole band than a solo by any one member.

This...  a true, straight up jam session where members pass solos and others play fill.  This type of improv from musicians of DT calibre is a fun thing to watch.   Even maybe thro in some planned duet/unison type stuff along the lines of the infamous JR/JP duet on Surrounded from the Chaos in motion DvD.   Still one of my favorite things to dial up on youTubage and look at from time to time.

Ħ

Should they be brought back?  No, they are really boring.

Will they be brought back?  Yes.  When DS and JR were brought into the band, they had their own solo spots.

Slain

I could care less, but preferably only if they could find a place where it fits into the song, not literally a complete break of nothing but drums like in Ytsejam. Drum solos work much better in a live setting, they're a lot more fun that way.

lonestar

I like the jam session idea.  Shit, the Dead made a career off of it, and I'd love to see what a band like DT would do.

An LTE style jam session at a DT show could be cool.

I think it depends what you mean by a drum solo. MP still did some solo-ish type stuff post-SFAM (I remember there was some stuff about a drum solo being cut from the Budokan DVD). Plus, if we're talking about studio drum solos, there's one in As I Am.

How is there a drum solo in As I Am?

I actually just watched the Budokan DVDs yesterday, and Portnoy does have a drum solo during one of the shows (it's shown on the second DVD). He also gets two guys from the crowd to come up and join him for a bit, which was pretty cool.
The first guy from the crowd did the best.

Dimitrius

If Mangini turns out to be the new drummer, yes.

But it shouldn't be something to be done on every single show.

LTE3

I would like to see one, if the drummer has something interesting to perform like Neil Peart. If the drummer can constuct his solo as a piece of music then yes, but as Mike P admitted he was not a great drum solo guy so he stopped them. I recall seeing his live and it really did not have any flow, no rhyme or reason.

I'd prefer to see 10 minutes of drum noodling spread out in other songs. Just a shit ton of fills in a specific section of a song, like they did with Finally Free on LSFNY. Stuff like that is just awesome, and it's not annoyingly long or boring.
Yeah, that's kind of the Danny Carey approach.  You usually get a couple of really bad ass drum solos every show, but they're within the context of a song.  The DT equivalent would probably be the Beyond This Life jam, which was fantastic.  I'd rather see one of those every night.

All of this.

Dublagent66

I would say yes, but it should be limited to just a couple minutes leading into a song.  That's all you really need.  No sense in trying to be like Neil Peart with a big production solo.  Only he knows how to do that right.  If someone else tried it, people would say, "Oh, he just trying to be like Neil, NOT!"

I'd be fine without them.  I got my fill with percussive nation 2009.  :metal

I bet they are going to give MM solo time at least if they do An Evening with shows.

Mangini likes and is good at drum solos, so yes.

Exactly and with that crazy kit he has, I'm sure it will be amazing.

lordxizor

As long as it's not too long. Anything more than a few minutes of nothing but drums gets really boring.
