MP is one of the few drummers who doesn't do drum solos. He used to, but stopped doing them (I think around Awake-SFAM?). Frankly, for the better because I didn't particular enjoy his drum solos. But, somebody like Neil Peart can actually do interesting drum solos, so the question is, would you look forward to the new drummer doing a drum solo?

Cool Chris

No. I don't hate them, but I don't like them either. And a band like DT has way too much good material to devote any set time to a drum solo.

Is that true? I wouldn't have thought the majority of drummers out there did solos. Guess I've just been lucky with the bands/shows I've gone to.
Maybe the grass is greener on the other side because you're not over there fucking it up.

Zydar

No thanks. I'm not fond of drum solos, no matter who does them.

No unless it's as entertaining as neil peart's which i highly doubt, but i think with the new drummer they will be back...

Neil Peart is one of the exceptions when it comes to drum solos.

Drum Solo, go home!

Drum Solo = one less song DT can play live

Apparently, even though we don't know who the drummer is, we already know who the drummer is.  And, aside from Neil Peart, there isn't another drummer i can think of who I'd like to see play a solo.

I think it depends what you mean by a drum solo. MP still did some solo-ish type stuff post-SFAM (I remember there was some stuff about a drum solo being cut from the Budokan DVD). Plus, if we're talking about studio drum solos, there's one in As I Am. But I can't think of any solo stuff, live or studio, after the ToT/Budokan era, unless you count the typical DT tradition of jamming on one song per tour (Beyond This Life on Budokan, Surrounded on CiM, Solitary Shell on PN '09, etc.)

I wouldn't mind giving the new drummer 15 seconds once or twice on the new album to go nuts. But yeah, no ten-minute live craziness, please. I voted yes because I do want to see some studio drum solo stuff, but I certainly don't want big live interludes.

Lowdz

I would imagine that the new guy will get one as an "introduction". look how good the new guy is!!!
I don't mind them as long as the drummer is good.
If the new shows are Evenings With that's ok. A 10 minute drum solo in a 2 hour show would be a no from me.

NP's solos are definately an entertaining part of the Rush show.

Funny, this topic crossed my mind at work today, and I hoped that they would not have the new drummer do any solos. He shouldn't have anything to prove; just that he was good enough for the other guys to offer him a job should be good enough.

lordxizor

I'd much rather see an extended jam session with the whole band than a solo by any one member.

I like that idea actually.

Depends how interesting the drum solo is and if it was "An Evening With..." tour.

This. There have been very few drummers that are able to make drum solos interesting. I can enjoy Neal Peart, though his most recent one on the Time Machine tour was eh. Feels like a lot of "been there, done that" with his solos these days. A Virgil Donati one that I saw at a Planet X show was phenominal. Other than that, most are just not that good. Kind of like standalone guitar solos. Within the context of songs, I am all for it. A guitar players showing off for the sake of showing off, not a fan...

Raziel666

God no, please, no drum solo!

If it's a case of JLB resting / catching his breath for a while (although DT have long instrumental passages so that shouldn't be the case if the setlist is planned carefully), I'd prefer an instrumental song instead of a drum solo - whoever the drummer might be.

Drum solos are always boring, so no.

The Presence of Frenemies

The problem with extended solos is that most of them either too spastic/all over the place or they spend too long riffing on one mediocre idea. And, in fact, it's easier to make both of those mistakes than neither, as https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jcLJw1v-YAw&feature=channel_video_title demonstrates (Seriously, how many tom rolls can you possibly do before it gets old?).

if by drum solo you mean one that is no more than 10 seconds, then sure. But im assuming you mean longer, then NO!

the only time i truly enjoy drum solos is when there is still other music going on, like in Finally Free (particularly LSFNY), or stuff Frank Zappa did

LieLowTheWantedMan

Sorry, but to me Neil Peart doesn't belong in the same sentence as that word. Interesting. :P

Anyways, I like drum solos, but only sometimes. Still, I vote yes.

The only drum solos that keep me interested are usually jazz drum solos.

Yes, I like this. I have a feeling that drum solos might happen alot the first tour to give the drummer a chance to introduce himself. Peart really is the most entertaining for solos though

Global Laziness

Should they? No. Will they? Probably.

Ultimetalhead

I'd prefer to see 10 minutes of drum noodling spread out in other songs. Just a shit ton of fills in a specific section of a song, like they did with Finally Free on LSFNY. Stuff like that is just awesome, and it's not annoyingly long or boring.

Excellent point

Lowdz

If it's Lang or Minnemann, yes. If it's Mangini. no. His Youtube solos are awful.

The improv jam gets a big thumbs up from me.

I'd rather see a drum solo than more guitar/keyboard extensions.

TAC

I could see a solo of about a minute, similar to MP closing out Home last year, though I don't expect it to be tacked onto an end of a song like that. I was speaking of the length.
Quote from: wkiml on June 08, 2012, 09:06:35 AMwould have thought the same thing but seeing the OP was TAC i immediately thought Maiden or DT related
Quote from: Stadler on February 08, 2025, 12:49:43 PMI wouldn't argue this.

Yeah, that's kind of the Danny Carey approach.  You usually get a couple of really bad ass drum solos every show, but they're within the context of a song.  The DT equivalent would probably be the Beyond This Life jam, which was fantastic.  I'd rather see one of those every night.

How in the fuck can this be considered awful?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Oe8XKgOuNtk

Yep. Seen that one. The last 30 seconds were ok but the three minutes before that were about as exciting as a Chroma Key song. I'm sure it was technically demanding, just soulless and boring.
