Official DT drum kit (not high-res):

I think calling it the "official DT drum kit" is a bit of a misnomer.  That's apparently what he used in the studio, but we have no idea what he'll bring out on the road.

I will say that if you are going to have that many pieces, in a way, his kit makes sense.  I remember seeing MP playing Trial of Tears on the Train of Thought tour, and it was that moment that it really hit me how ludicriously huge his kit was.  During the intro, he is literally having to take several steps to walk from one side of his kit to the other to play certain things.  Not that that's wrong--I actually thought it was pretty cool.  But at the same time, it also made me laugh.  It was a very visual representation of the kind of musical excess that DT had become known for that simultaenously made me laugh and say "that is so cool" while also shaking my head and saying "that is just completely absurd."  Mangini's kit has the same effect on me.  However, from a drummer's standpoint, his kit makes more sense than Portnoy's in a way because, with more pieces hanging above him and within arms' reach, he can reach more pieces without having to leave his primary position at the throne, thus conserving movement and being more efficient, which is usually the goal in drumming.

For people who would actually know, would it be possible to play all of DT's stuff on one kit or was the two kit setup just something that made it easier?

You can 100% do it on one kit, it just has to be big.

The two kit set-up was more of an aesthetic and creative choice.

Still think it's an ugly kit. At least from this angle. Needs some beauty-fying for the tour.
